There's a crazy rumor out there that Liverpool will make a
£25M bid for Jack Wilshire in the summer.
As an Arsenal fan, I wouldn't necessarily mind Wilshere being sold, especially to a team I consider by far the easiest to root for of the other top English teams. I can't even think of how he should be valued though.
- He's 23, so at least 7-8 years of his prime left
- He qualifies as home-grown, so essentially a free roster spot for any English club
- He's English, so a local PR boost for whatever club has him
- He's experienced, having come up huge at young ages in big CL games
- He's capable of moments of brilliance
- He does not excel defensively by any stretch; at best he's mediocre, though I would grade him more harshly. He seems to think getting "stuck in" is what being a strong defender entails
- He's not yet mature enough to avoid the dumb, but easily avoided, media situations he finds himself in (e.g. smoking in public)
- He has a history of frequent injuries
Ozil went to Arsenal for £42,5M at age 24
Cesc went to Chelsea for £30M at age 27
Juan Mata went to United for £37.1M at age 25
Sanchez went to Arsenal for £30-35M at age 25
I would probably guess Wilshere's trade value to an English club is somewhere near £35M; he's not nearly as proven as those players but he's younger and English.
If I were Arsene, and could find a buyer for that amount, I would probably pull the trigger and buy someone with more defensive fortitude to balance out the numerous creative & scoring threats the team already has.
