You suck.

That said - love the pick, he was the guy I was rooting for.  Sounded like the Pats thought he might be going to the Colts and they had a trade lined up with HOU before backing out when the Colts went WR.

I wanted a corner, but only because I didn't think there was much chance Brown would still be available. Once again, I underestimated the stupidity of Jim Irsay.

Anywho, Kiper said best value pick of first round and someone else said "Maybe the best pick of the round".

He has all the physical tools, he was productive in college at a big time program, he has scheme versatility, no real injury history, no character flags, and fills a position of big time need.  Whats not to like?

Enough about posting the name here. I can understand why people are frustrated but lets use this thread to discuss the player and to post youtube compilations please.

@BenVolin: Malcom Brown is only 20 years old but is married with a 4-year-old step-daughter and an 8-month old daughter. Maturity

I like the pick but I'm a little surprised. BB is famous for wanting guys who live and breathe football. Football has to be first. Just ask Jabari Holloway. But, Butler always talks about balance in life and how he's not a big film guy and doesn't think or watch football outside of practice and games.

Yeah, and they could have easily found that info on the internet without spoiling what everyone else thought was the protocol.

Well, dude has to support a family. That could make football VERY important to him.

Not too many good highlights videos. Still, in these clips he seems like a VERY solid presence at DT. To be honest, it's stunning to me to that he's only 20 -- he looks very technically advanced.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szz9UIFBIiQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWlTyhGatIg

Edit: His strengths/weaknesses from the NFL.com profile. Based upon 90 seconds of looking at YouTube clips everything feels right, but take that with the grain of salt needed given that it's based upon 90 seconds of looking at YouTube.

STRENGTHS Showed great improvement during 2014 season and is considered a "riser" on draft boards by league scouts. Good bend in his hips to play low off the snap. Athletic big man who improved his quickness this year. Began to impose his will more frequently late in the season. Excels once he reaches a lineman's edge. Flashes power and control in his hands. Discards blockers when ready as a read-and-react defender and uses a punch to keep himself clean and scrape down the line after ball carriers. Eyes stay glued on ball carrier no matter what battle is in front of him. Can recover and improve positioning if he is losing early in snap. Light on his feet and diagnoses very quickly. Hard defender for offensive linemen to cross-face. Too athletic and talented to consistently single block.

WEAKNESSES Despite size and frame, not consistently physical at the point of attack. Has average power in his lower body and struggles to hold his ground against double teams. Looking for secondary motor as rusher. Effort level stalls when his pass rush stalls. Is in need of a more polished counter move as a pass rusher. Would benefit from improved strength and ability to vary game from penetration to power. Plays hard but scouts do not consider him a "glass-eater."
... aaaand I'm back to work.

I know it's a highlight video against college kids but I don't think I've seen a 320lb guy with that much speed and power on the Pats in my lifetime.  He doesn't look as sturdy as Vince but he looks quicker/faster.

DLs in the AFC East are going to be legit next season.  For teams we play in 2015 with a suspect interior OL (Jets, Titans, Jags) the Pats will likely present a stiff test, with enough power, speed, and depth to wreck havoc.

Yeah, I had been Jones-ing for a Vince replacement, and this is a nice olive Branch.

Edit: ... anyway, interesting theory I just came across on Twitter: The Patriots had a handshake agreement in place with the Texans to trade #32 (hence the reports by every reporter, basically)... under the caveat that they would retain the pick if for some reason the Colts didn't take Brown.  And then the Colts didn't take Brown, and all of a sudden there was no trade.

Thoughts?

Cherry-picked SSS caveat, but I'm very impressed by the run plays in those highlights. He uses his quickness to get penetration, but stays strong and patient and doesn't get out of position. The pass rush is just gravy, on most of those plays it looks like he was playing against far inferior players or was just unblocked. Plus this guy is only 20. Love this pick.

I'd love to see some extended video from a game where he was matched against a legitimate NFL G/C prospect.

Wrote a bit about him here. Thought he might slip into the second round, but a day one talent.

Brown flashes an intriguing combination of power, quickness and solid technique – attributes that make him a good fit for almost any interior spot along any defensive front. Brown is quick off the snap and can close on a target in tight spaces making him tough to block solo The lineman carries his weight well, moving more like a sub-300-pounder at times on tape but does struggle to consistently anchor against double-teams. While an effective pass rusher in college, he relied mostly on his first step quickness to gain penetration and may currently lack ‒ at the NFL level ‒ the necessary counter moves to win battles once initially stalled.

Projection/Scheme Fit:
Given his overall skill set, Brown’s best fit may be a 1- or 3- technique defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense or 5-technique defensive end in a 3-4 defense where his gap penetration ability can thrive. He could easily sneak into the back half of the first round, but if not, some team on day two will pick up a day one talent.

I think he can easily add more weight without sacrificing some of the athleticism that makes him unique for his body type. Still believe Siliga slots in best as the nose tackle out of the 3-4. But when you are in the nickel as much as the Patriots (or any team for that matter), someone like Brown offers that combination of stoutness against the run with the ability to penetrate / constrict the middle of the pocket as a pass rusher.

For a guy who supposedly is "not a glass-eater," he's certainly saying all the right things to the media tonight.

Brown: I'm just relentless. i want to be the best and be the best I can be.

Brown: You'll get my all out of me. I'll just leave it all out on the field

Brown: Whatever I'm asked to do, I'm going to do that... whatever I can do. I'll come in with the right mindset.
Brown: I'm just ready to go to work. I don't expect anything. I'm going to work for everything.

Brown said "you're about to get the best player you ever drafted" and "be ready for when I touch the field."

Edit:  On the trade, I agree with Dynomite's theory about what happened.  Doesn't really make sense for Shalise to get something so wrong.

She still fucked it up. The trade, if any, was conditional. If you have to be first, at least get it right. This is not hard. And it should not remind people of CNN.

Yeah, sounds a lot like a young Wilfork. I still can't believe (or I guess I can) that the Colts would pass on Brown and take another WR. It reminds me a lot of their Anthony Gonzalez pick.

Is it too late for the Colts to propose a rule change for 7-on-7 football? Handful of non-need / reach picks, I thought.

The situations for La'el Collins, Randall Gregory and Jalen Collins probably busted some boards as well, causing positional runs in other areas.

Bob Kravitz is losing his mind over the Colts' pick.  Tee-hee.

Here's an updated Mark Daniels article on Brown.

Edit:  Kravitz's article is now up.  Two great quotes:

There's little doubt – I think – that Grigson will go heavy on the defensive side of the ball Friday and Saturday. If not, Chuck Pagano, a defensive-minded coach, will go on a hunger strike. The Patriots ran for 657 yards in the last three games against the Colts. Six-fifty-seven! Did I mention that Goldman was there? That Brown, who naturally went to the Patriots, was there? How about Collins?

If I'm in the Patriots "war room" – they forgot to invite me this year – I'm rolling on the ground in hysterics.

FWIW, the word "Patriots" appears eight times in an article about the Colts' first-round draft pick.

Positionally I would have preferred a CB, but his age-talent-position combination is about as good as it gets. I always look at the young and talented prospects as guys that would go even higher in next years draft, but are available this year. If Brown had chosen to go back to school for his senior year, he probably would have been a 2016 top-15 draft pick, and at only 21 YO. So I'm just about as satisfied as I can be for someone that hasn't watched any film.
