#Patriots special teams ace Matthew Slater expected to miss "some time," but should play again this season. Good news.

Here
MCL seemed like best-case, so that he should be back for the stretch and playoffs is a win to me.

Just find. Way to avoid S/T disasters over the next month or so of games and then we get him back, along with what I can only assume will be a nice, if not totally meaningful, emotional bump for the team. They effing love this guy.

How does "should play again this season" translate to "practicing this week?" I'm so confused by this, but also really pleased. I was really afraid that we were all about to learn a serious lesson about the value that Slater brings, to the tune of +/- 5 to 10 yards of field position on every kickoff or punt.

This is really positive news, but it still wouldn't surprise me if he misses a week or two

As Yaz alludes to, I don't think he'll play this week.  I would venture to guess that with 3 games in 15 days they will take it slow with him.  I am also pleased that this isn't a long-term injury.

as long as they don't ask the guy who replaces him to snap on a fake punt we'll be fine.  For a little while

I agree, but don't they almost always have three games in fifteen days?

Very good news.  Given the photo above, his knee ligaments seem to have pretty good flexibility, if that's possible.

One thing that's always puzzled me.  Given how Slater consistently gets down first on coverage - along with his reputation as the best in the league - why hasn't one telecast focussed on how he does it?  You know, pull some footage from 5 or so plays and really shown why he's able - and others are unable - to be so consistent.  I've seen every game in his career and have heard the lip service, but there's never any detail.  It's really a shame and another black mark for NFL analysts and producers.

Chuck has written some about this for ITP:

What has always puzzled me is how Slater is so good at Special Teams (on the punt and field goal coverage teams) with his awareness, angles, and speed, but he has been completely unable to translate those skills to another position.  Being a gunner is not so unlike being a WR (getting a clean release off the line and running by someone), and yet he has been terrible every time they've tried to play him there.  Being a S doesn't seem so unlike covering kickoffs or punts (run towards someone with a ball, take a good angle, and tackle them well), and yet the Slater-to-S experiment didn't last long.

C? I don't get it, do you guys not really get that 3 Sundays spans 15 days?

2 * 7 + 1 = 15.

Can we go back to talking about Slater's awesome coverage and horrible hands?

The plays I recall him as a WR the biggest challenge is his hands, and secondarily that he isn't good at winning battles for 'toss up' balls.  Those are two skills that are unique to WR and don't come into play on special teams (at least not in the same way, in the case of 'toss up' balls).

His straight-line speed at WR is not, to my eyes, the problem at all.

Exactly. Which is why folks were pointing out that the original statement that we should especially take it slow with Slater given that we've got 3 games in 15 coming up didn't really hold up.

In the simulacrum
For what it is worth, with a Monday night game on 11/23 and a Thursday night game on 10/29, there are some 15 day stretches where this 2x7+1=15 (divided by three games!) bit does not actually apply.

In any case, I'd like to see Slater back soon.

Still not sure if Matt Slater will play Sunday, but his teammates have been impressed with his speed at practice. Good sign, at least.
