The Penguins had the right to pursue draft compensation and were like nah that's cool.  Because who wants free draft picks?  Especially from division teams?

Why would Shero take that job when there are better jobs available out there? I'm assuming he didn't have much interest from other teams.

He's essentially going to be Lou Lam's whipping boy. Lou is going to be hovering over his shoulder for every move he makes.

I think so, although the Devils insisted that Shero has a "clean slate" to do what he wants.  If Shero fires the entire player assessment and personnel staff, especially the scouts, then we'll know he's in charge.  If he doesn't, then we know Lou is still in charge in all but name only.  Shero seems like the guy being set up to take the fall for Lou's incompetence over the past 5-10 years. Shero will suffer Lou's bad contracts and weak, old roster and break a few eggs that have to be broken...perhaps even trading over-priced Devils fan favorites like Travis Zajac and Patrik Elias. He'll be a hero if he can get Ryan Clough to retire.  Then, once the Devils are firmly at the bottom of the league, which is where they are surely headed, an entire new management team will be put in place, Lou will retire, and the Devils will seriously be starting over.  But these next 2-3 years under Shero (and the shadow of Lou) will be circling the drain stuff.  Anybody's guess as to who is going to want to coach this team over the next few years. Probably someone desperate to get a shot at big league managing.

Clowe retiring is a bad thing. Clowe needs to sit on LTIR til that contract goes away like Pronger and Marc Savard.

Damn, both Conference finals games this weekend are matinees?  What in the fuck?  Anyone know how to run a pro sports league these days?

Peverly still needs to see more doctors and there would need to be word done with NHL and NHLPA on insurance waiver issues...

... but for now anyway, the story is that some encouraging medical news has Peverly at least looking hard at the possibility of comeback.

Off the top of my head, the two major ones I can think of are Herb Brooks and Lou, but those were a long time ago.

Edit: Rumor is the ND players found out via twitter. Ugh.

Technically Mike Milbury did to the Isles after he spent about one week at BC.  Or about as long as Jeremy Roenick lasted there as well.

Actually he was with the Flames prior to the Pens.

yeah I forgot that.  Anyways I guess he fits going from UW to Calgary.

Hakstol has obviously coached a lot of talented guys but I think there was some frustration in Grand Forks that they'd never been able to win the NCAA title.

He had the monkey on his back for sure in Grand Forks. He is now heading into the devil's den in Philly though.

He had every resource possible to win in Grand Forks and he couldn't do it.  They have the best facilities and had elite players and still couldn't break through.

I'm not totally sold on the move, but the single elimination aspect of the NCAAs is pretty tough.

For example, in 2011 they play in their most hostile environment (Xcel center), outshot Michigan 2-1, and lose 3-2 in the national semis. In 2014 they win their region as a 4 seed and lose 2-1 to the consensus #1 team in the country. In 2006 they outplayed BC but Jordan Parise was awful and they Lose 6-5 to BC.

You like to think Hakstol would have won a title given his resources, but him not doing so doesn't make him some horrific failure.

Roy is an asshole?

Anyways, Todd McLellan is getting the Oilers gig. Interesting hire. I like Todd, but his experience with San Jose was with veteran rosters. Now he's being handed the keys to a very young and green roster.

The Babcock saga should wrap up soon. He's meeting with Holland today and a decision is expected to follow in the next day or two. Throughout this whole ordeal I've come to the conclusion that nobody loves Mike Babcock more than Mike Babcock. Insufferable.

Babcock war is between Toronto, Buffalo and Detroit. Seems like the Leafs and Sabres are backing up the Brinks trucks today, while Detroit may offer slightly *less* (5/$20 mill according to Dreger) but it's his comfort zone.

Sounds like Babcock to Toronto. McKenzie says he isn't going to Buffalo and Ward says he is leaving Detroit.

Edit: Bob says with the Wings and Sabres out, it's Toronto, San Jose and St. Louis.

See ya, Babs. I'm actually pretty excited to see what Jeff Blashill can do with this club. There's a lot of young talent there. Holland still has some work to do on that roster, but some new blood behind the bench might be a good thing now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Babcock is making more than twice as much as the next highest paid coach on that contract is he not?

2. Todd McLellan, $3M*
3. Joel Quenneville, $2.75M
4. Claude Julien $2.5M
5. Darryl Sutter, $2M
5. Michel Therrien, $2M
5. Alain Vigneault, $2M
5. Peter Laviolette, $2M
5. Lindy Ruff, $2M

Good for Babcock, who's a pretty good guy, and good for the Leafs, who have had really bad management for a very long time. Living in Toronto (after growing up in Mass), I laugh at the pre-season stories every year, and celebrate Leafs Official Elimination Day. but this is really a good hockey town and deserves at least the prospect of some on-ice success...

Gotta think Cooper's joining this club soon. He's earned it and he seems like a great guy to play for.

No pressure.
Toronto is paying Horton almost that much to be on LTIR so that they could get rid of Clarkson and use the cap space. They have a ton of money and this is one of the few ways they can leverage it. Makes sense to me.

Horton's contract wasn't insured. Lolz.
