it is far more effective to coached hard by somebody you respect, have a relationship with, and “don’t want to let down” then somebody is just an asshole that barely knows your name. My recollection is that Mayo has been a hard ass on players on the defense when needed.

BB had the cache by being the best coach in the history of the NFL. Mayo has a different approach.

I find it pretty knee-jerk unrealistic (and, frankly, simplistic) to assume that because Jerod Mayo (or anyone) has a "one of the guys" personality he can't ALSO be a disciplinarian. The little we've heard about him as a coach over the years has been that he embodies an excellent blend of both.

So Mayo came out with a glass of orange juice, making a joke about BB doing it years ago.

Can they just move on from Bill already?

I posted this in the free agency thread, but it makes more sense here.

I wonder if Mayo/Covington will bring any schematic changes to the D that would impact the types of players we are used to seeing in a Pats uni. More zone? More one-gapping? We've pretty much had the same basic scheme for 23 years, which has clearly impacted the sorts of players that BB targeted.

If that were the case they probably would have done more in free agency. But their only moves were fringe types (Takitaki and Watts) who both kind of make sense with what we’ve seen the last 2 decades

Patriots HC Jerod Mayo, when speaking about FA

“When you go through the draft, you want to get guys that are magnets,” Jerod Mayo told reporters at the NFL annual meeting in Orlando, FL, last week.
“I played with the ultimate magnet in Tom Brady where guys wanted to play for Tom, with Tom, and with the team. It kind of gets skewed, and now it’s the other end of the spectrum where, what pieces do we have to attract those outside guys? If we draft a guy, you’re coming here. So, that has to be our philosophy as we continue to put this thing together.”

Feels like Mayo either needs to stop talking or have a PR consultation before he says anything. This comes off as complete amateur hour. The Pats never built the team primarily through free agency, nor attracting free agents via the "magnet".

Also he's literally dissing the current guys in the building with this "what pieces do we have".

I'm a BB guy so maybe I need to adapt but egads...

This is pretty jarring man, in one go he's talking down the talent on the roster while also insinuating the only way they can acquire players is if they have no other choice but to come to NE. Just why? The generic "we believe in building through the draft and developing our own players as the bet path towards becoming a consistent contender in this league" wouldn't suffice?

Jesus Christ, these last two responses to fairly boilerplate basic team-building language is so tiresome. Literally EVERY SINGLE PRO ATHLETE knows what he's getting at there, and no one on this roster is going to be remotely offended by it. Take a breath.

If the past, say, three years haven't been enough to show this fanbase that yeah these guys are all super sensitive and have bunny ears tuned to whatever is coming out of ownership/coaching staff's mouths then I wonder what it'll take.

I kind of like that Mayo isn't trying to be Bill in his responses with the media. He's "speaking for himself", which was right there on the wall with "do your job". Could he say a little less and stem the word vomit? Yes. But there's nothing here that's really meant anything. Just get organized internally and put this thing on the right track, build incrementally, and he'll probably be fine.

I could be wrong, but I really do believe that there aren't many, if any, players on the Patriots who will take offense to this. Who? David Andrews? Judon? IMO, they know EXACTLY what Mayo is talking about. You need a big-time team leader and talent at the key positions for guys to gravitate toward. How is this even a little bit controversial? I just feel like this is SOSH, not WEEI, and that hot takes like those - especially right now with people acting like Mayo is fucking it all up - are just over-the-top and way premature. Will he be a great HC? No idea. Has he been perfect in his short tenure? Of course not. Is there a learning curve? Naturally, and the "burning cash" bit was not the best, but isn't really going to make a tangible difference. They're rebuilding, he's learning on the job. I expect he'll be good at it, but who knows. Picking apart every little thing he says - going the full Felger - is not helpful and seems a little cheaper than this site has tried to be over the years.

I don’t think Mayo is intentionally being the anti-BB but I really can’t discern what he’s trying to accomplish with his constant word salad he puts out there

He mentioned taking a very good player at a very important position, burning cash, trading down, not having a magnet…etc etc

Even if these things aren’t actually hurting the team, I don’t see how they’re helping either so why say anything like this? There’s only downside even if it’s minimal.

Fans hear “burning cash” and the team fails to add any meaningful players and is still sitting on the most cap space. Perhaps some fans (and certainly some on social media) get frustrated and mock him and the FO

Players hear the comments on lack of “magnet” and while true enough, it isn’t crazy to think one or two players might view that negatively

What purpose does talking about trading down serve? I doubt any GM cares what Mayo has to say either way but certainly if you’re trying to extract max value you should be staunchly pumping up how much you want to stay put.

I just don’t see any benefit to it. What he’s actually saying doesn’t really make any difference to me, the fact that the Pats seem to have a coach who just says whatever pops into his mind in front of reporters is mildly concerning insofar as there doesn’t seem to be a coordinated effort to control the messaging to any degree.

Control the messaging?
Hes not running for office.

And you don't see this as the tiniest bit hyperbolic?
The fact that he had to walk back his “burn cash” statement tells me it did, in fact, just pop into his mind and he didn’t think it through.

I like Mayo, and I want him to succeed. But there’s nothing in his statements to the press which tells me he really considers what he’s saying.

Even his introductory press conference had some cringey stuff in it.

I’d prefer it if there weren’t any press conferences at all.

I don’t disagree, but what then? A litany of complaints that we’re not hearing anything from the head coach? Mayo can’t win anyway he plays this, the only question is how on point the howls of criticism will be.

Right. So it would have to league wide! :D

I get why they do them, i.e. more interest, more content, more engagement by fans. I just… I’d prefer to do without. That said, I’m not one to take away other people’s toys.
