It just dawned on me that a good number of the members that post on the site were not even born when Mike Gorman became the Celtics television play-by-play job 43 years ago. I was a freshman in college when he began his long career, and it seems to me that he’s always been there when I followed the Celtics, even though I did watch them previously. It seems like Mike has always been there.

I think that Drew Carter was a good hire, and will do a really good job as the television play-by-play guy, but there was some thing great about having someone who has been through the incredible the Bird era, and then the ups and downs of the time between Bird and KG coming here and restoring the championship pedigree, to the arrival of the Jays and a return to legit championship contender. Mike and Tommy had amazing chemistry, and I don’t think I will ever seen in my lifetime a better fit for the local television play by play and color git.

My favorite memory of Mike Gorman wasn’t watching him on television. It was during the 2008 NBA Finals.. I was sitting one row behind the auxiliary press row, thirteen rows behind the basket, And starting at game, one, sitting directly in front of me was Mike Gorman. I chatted him up, and he was amazingly accommodating during the entire series, making sure that I got the quarterly stat sheets, talking with me and my buddy throughout the series. It was like I was attending the games with Mike Gorman. . Game six of course was magical, getting to see the Celtics win their 17th championship, dismantling Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

Gorman truly is a nice guy. He wasn’t the flashiest announcer around and maybe that’s why they took way too long to finally induct him into the basketball Hall of Fame. It seems to me that he understood that he was losing his fastball a little bit, and it’s not surprising to me that he knew when it was time to step away. The guys been a class act from the first day he sat next to Tommy and I’m going to miss him.

Don't the NBC Sports Boston guys get at least a couple of first round games?

Yup, he's still going to call the first round, and since Drew I think said he was done for the season maybe Mike plans on travelling too. He also mentioned a few broadcasts ago he might be doing some studio work in the later rounds.

Mike’s the best. His talk with Forsberg was entertaining and enlightening. Two things that stood out:

(1) Him watching broadcasts and yelling at the screen for announcers to shut up. Very on brand.
(2) Him telling other broadcast partners (not Tommy) to imagine there’s a third person on the broadcast and setting aside some time for that third person. Which would be the picture on the TV.

very sad to see him going but he went out pretty much on top, particularly if the Cs get a ring.

I could see him doing fill in studio work if he wanted to

I loved Mike and Tommy so much. Sad to see Mike go. Those 2 guys had a hell of a run.

Yup. I'm curious to watch, because it kind of goes against how he approaches commentating by less is more. I still think him as a third person on set would be great. It also wouldn't surprise me if the door wasn't wide open for next season if he wants to do a couple games or studio work. We haven't had him and Drew together yet right? I feel like Drew could really make that work for a few games a year

Didn't he do games with Cousy as well? Mr. Basketball isn't well enough to attend, but I'm surprised he wasn't mentioned (or at least not in the ceremony itself, maybe during the game and I missed it).

Yeah they ran a clip from him during the time Wyc was on the broadcast. Still seemed really sharp and, paraphrasing, Wyc said he asked him the other day how he was feeling, and he jokingly responded "you don't ask a 93 year old that"

Thanks. I'm sorry I missed that. Will have to go back and find it. Better that than him on death's door or the like.

I remember feeling a sense of almost-pride watching the Olympics some time ago and recognizing the voice flawlessly calling a Team Handball (or some other mostly internationally-popular sport) match. "Hey. I recognize that guy!"

I was at the game yesterday. The tributes were really well done, and the vibe in the Garden was awesome, plus the love for Mike was palpable. Every time out through the first half they showed pre-taped thanks/tributes/etc. from former players, execs, other broadcasters. Really a great feel good day for a true legend. Every time the whole place gave Mike a standing ovation.

Forgot to ask this Sunday, but John Sterling's retirement brought it to mind- is Gorman's call of Larry's 60 point game around anywhere? Only call I've heard over the years is Sterling's.

Or, perhaps, I'm misremembering and there was no local (Boston) broadcast.
