Uh, Jeter isn't married. As far as we know he's a single man fucking single women. That's not newsworthy. Tiger Woods is a married man flying slores to Australia to touch his wiener.

What I'm having a hard time figuring out is why being one of the three people in the Gilette ads makes any difference.

And the third guy in the ad is Theirry Henry. What'd he do? An inadvertent handball?

It is to Mike.

Mike thinks he's Prince Valiant or something. My point was not the married angle, my point was that Mike has him on a well-behaved pedestal and he really shouldn't. Jeter is free to plow through the Manhattan phonebook if he pleases, and he has, but Mike has him rated as far above that sort of thing. The fawning idolatry by Mike is ridiculous in this case. He's has been around long enough to know that most of these guys cat around like crazy, married or not, Jeter included.

For the past few days Mike has been screaming at callers about the Tiger Woods episode. Mike's point was 'WHAT DID HE DO? ALL HE DID WAS DRIVE OVER A FIRE HYDRANT ON PRIVATE PROPERTY!' Despite the fact that callers kept pointing out that the leaked phone calls and bimbos popping up all over the internet were totally destroying his reputation, Mike did what old media does best- ignore the gossip sites until its too late. He came off (once again) as on old, pompous ass who barely knows how to use his email machine. In this case the callers were right on the money, Mike was living in Tiger's PR bubble.

Today, since the phone message audio leaked and Tiger issued an official statement, Mike completely changed his tune, didn't acknowledge that he had done a 180, refused to man up to his dumb statements the past week or apologize to the callers he yelled at who were proved to be absolutely correct. Then he mentioned that 2 of the 3 guys 'from that Gillette ad' were in trouble so now the biggest clean name in sports are Federer and of course, the Yankee Captain. It's always about Jeter, isn't it Mike? "Jeter moves to the fore here," he pronounced. Really? Why? And how so? How much more 'to the fore' can he get? And does Mike really think their aren't 10,000 bimbos out there with weird Jeter messages on their phones too? Is he drinking diet Coke or Kool Aid?

Look, this is the same guy who spent the better part of an hour earlier this year insisting that Notre Dame would go into the USC game undefeated and that if they won that game there was no doubt they would play in the BCS title game this year. He then proceeded to spend the next hour hammering every caller who correctly pointed out that he was full of crap.

The point is that if anyone out there is waiting for Mike to "man up" and apologize for his stupidity, they're going to be waiting for some time....

I actually somewhat agreed with Mike about Tiger. If he starts losing sponsorships, or sponsors are demanding some kind of statement from him, then maybe...but barring that he's right, Tiger has nothing to gain from baring his soul. And the people who want/expect him to are media types who want to dig into some juicy gossip.

But I was ashamed to agree with him because he was being an utter douchebag about it.

Oh and as for Tiger vs. Jeter...where exactly does cheating on your wife rank compared to doing for herpes what Michael Jordan did for Nike?

And WTF does Jeter move to the fore of? The most likable guy in the Gillette ad? Federer and Woods dominated their respective sports like few if any had before. Derek Jeter can't sniff their jockstraps when it comes to athletic dominance.

He was dead wrong, though. There was way more to this saga then just losing sponsorships and judging Tiger's rightness or wrongness about handling this situation shouldn't be judged solely on the number of sponsors he retains. It's a part of the mix for sure, but not the whole story. Tiger's image has taken a beating here even if he's still in a Gatorade spot a month from now.
Also, Mike kept pretending that Tiger was just going for a innocent drive at 3am and put his hands in his ears when it came to reports from anything other than the New York Times about what was clearly more than a simple traffic accident. After it became clear that sites like TMZ and US Magazine had scooped everyone and proved Mike wrong, he finally accepted the information tipping point and acted like he had been right all along.

Francesa is a hypocrite...he said Tiger being out at 2am is no ones business, he's a grown man and can do what he wants. This is the same idiot that spent 3 whole days killing Duaner Sanchez of the Mets for getting in a cab at 2am in Miami a couple years ago and ended up getting into a season ending accident.

Disregarding whether Mike is a hypocrite, he's completely right on this issue. His point is that nobody cares beyond the juicy gossip of whether Tiger's wife clocked him because he's fucking whores in New York and nobody who has called him has made even a semi-convincing rebuttal to that. Hearing grown men actually claim that a fire hydrant is in the public interest is ridiculous.

The worst part of today was Fatcessa's comments that he can understand if Tiger were taking Vicodin for the major knee surgery.

Uhhh Mike...that surgery was many full-moons ago.

It's almost like Mike is being cognizant that Jim Nantz etc. are keeping score for Tiger (a caller named Jim from West Islip today alluded to such a scenario) and he doesn't want to be on the other side of the ledger.

Mike's been a joke on this topic....terrible display the past week.

I wish I had the recording (I was traveling in my car) but there was a caller in the 2:30-2:45 pm segment that suggested he had it on good authority that Roy Halladay was in Philly with his agent negoiating with the Phillies. Mike completely blew off the caller saying that the "Halladay is not a free agent...The Phillies cannot talk to him..." It seemed to escape his mind that Toronto might have granted the Phiilies permission to talk with Halladay about an extension before completing a trade. Anyway, I get home about 4pm and hear about the actual trade. Did "The Sports Pope" give any credit or appologize to the caller or admit that he (Mike) was wrong? Of course not. But that's why we loooooove good ole Mike.

Any comments on reactions to the Lackey/Cameron signings would be appreciated.

My expectation is that his reaction will be a combination of:

"But CC is still bettah than anything on that team, Beckett isn't what he once was, and the Japanese fella is done. DONE. At best the rotations are a wash."

and

"So we go and get Teixeira one year, and Curtis Granderson the next, and they LOSE Jason Bay and pick up a guy who's not as good as Granderson, and I'm supposed to be worried?! Puhlease. Where's the offense? WHERE'S THE OFFENSE?"

He was a lot more focused on Halladay to the Phils and its impact on the Mets (ie now they can't get him, he's ended up with their rivals, etc...) than on Lackey. Lots of calls from disgruntled Mets fans (is there any other kind?) bemoaning yet another Omar/Wilpon screw-up.

When he did mention Lackey, Mike kind of veered back and forth between "Lackey is a good pitcher and now the Red Sox have amazing pitching depth" to "Well, anybody could have signed him for $85 million, so Theo isn't that great." I didn't hear any mention of Cameron from him.

As much as a blowhard Mike is, he's 100% correct here. Ryan just said in his press conference, "Well, we did face the Colts against Manning and their starters for almost 3 quarters..." as if to imply that the victory last Sunday was somehow earned.

This is awesome. Best Mike rant of the NFL season.

Very Awesome Rant.

Odd, the Jest fans were SO high winning the Superbowl and all in week 2. Then a losing streak they HATED their teams, lives, etc. Then 3 wins in a row, beating their chests, then the Atlanta loss and suicidal.

Don't think I have EVER seen a fanbase that was more arrogant when they thought they were good e.g. after ONE victory, and more depressed after losses.

Sox pre-2004 fans don't even come close to this.

Did he have anything to say about the unmitigated disgrace his beloved Giants were in their final game ever at the Meadowlands?

That was yesterday. But he still managed to somehow make the Giants seem great. Along the lines of "embarrassment, disgusting...how could you play this way in front of those legends on the sideline (LT, Carson, etc)? They disgraced this franchise that is one the best of all time. They're in the top 20% of franchises since the merger. Look it up, it's a tremendous history and they disgraced it with that play on Sunday".

So yes he ripped them, but he had to talk about the "greatness of the Giants" while doing so.

What did Mike say about the Colts? I remember him advocating hard for the Giants to play the Pats all out week 16 of their undefeated season, and getting really angry with callers who thought Coughlin should rest the players. I would think the Colts giving up the way they did is something that would really get under his skin.

Which reminds me of a great call the two had with Polian some years back. I think it was Chris, who always used to get on Peyton, needling Polian about Peyton not handling the pressure, etc., after a Colts playoff loss, and Polian hangs up right in the middle of the interview. I miss Dog.

Not sure you're being fair here, he spent hours ripping many of the current Giants very hard, players and coaches alike, saying he wanted a major overhaul in the offseason.

Oh he absolutely ripped them. He destroyed them with his comments. But he managed to throw in those ridiculous remarks about disgracing the "Giant Legends" and their "proud and glorious history". Please. This wasn't the home team mailing it in while closing the Boston Garden, Montreal Forum, or Yankee Stadium in front of Bill Russel, Maurice Richard, or Mickey Mantle. I didn't need to hear about how they "tainted" the Giant organization and legacy going out of the stadium this way. Bad team got beat badly...save us the melodrama.

Eh, the Giants have won 3 Super Bowls and been to a fourth since they went to the Meadowlands. They have certainly done things on that field that warrants Mike putting his Giants hat on and talking about how they have disgraced the history of the team in Giants Stadium.

It's not like closing the Forum/Garden/Yankee Stadium, but if Joe Benigno throws a shit fit next Monday about how the Jets disgraced the Meadowlands by laying an egg vs. the Bengals, that will be much dumber. The Jets have done nothing there.

Sure the Giants have had some great teams and great players, but I don't think a bad team (which is what the Giants are) getting pounded at home on a 33 year old football field about to close is some human tragedy. Fat Ass even talked about how there isn't an affinity for football fields like baseball parks because there are usually only 8 games per year played there (10 at most) and nobody ever see a team win a championship on their home field (uless the SB's "neutral" site's team happens to be playing). Of coure 5 minutes later he goes on and on about how they disrepected this great franchise in front of ex players "on the final game in Giant Stadium!". Apparently nobody told him the Jets are playing there this Sunday. I was just trying to point out that he ripped the current Giants team, but had to talk about the greatness of the franchise's history like the Celtics lost to the Lakers 110-7 on the final game of the Garden. The romance of the team/stadium was a little much.

BTW - He said that LT "must have been been in shock watching that defense". I have a feeling after years of cocaine, hookers, and booze, not a lot shocks LT.

Banned, I think Francesa was more concerned with that effort in front of the all-time great Giants who were on the sidelines as the fact they played that way on the final day of the Meadowlands existence in Giants history.

I'm pretty sure guys like LT and Harry Carson wouldn't have mailed it in the way the Giants D did on Sunday....I think that was more of his beef than the stadium issue. Not that he ignored the stadium issue of course, he threw that in there as well.

You're probably right. I guess I just wanted to hear a little humility after he had been pumping the Giants up as the best team in the NFL early this season. And while he did tear into them on Monday, he had to revert to his fanboy ways by talking about their glory days as part of his rant. That said, I'm probably being too critical and your assessment is probably more accurate...his years of blowhard speeches have made me a little biased on the negative side.

In the first 30 minutes of the show, two callers have already chimed in with "the Jets are the team to beat" and "the Jets could win the Super Bowl. They have as much chance as anybody, after all, they beat Manning last week".

Mike was giving them a little bit of credit in the beginning of the show, but now after hearing caller after caller gloating about the Jets win, Mike is starting to get upset. Funny stuff. He already threw out the following, "this is where Jets' fans lose it. You could have Giant fans rooting for your team because they're on the fence, but instead you guys talk about being the best team in the playoffs, it turns everybody against you". First off, most Jet fans are delusional morons, but why should they care if Giant fans pull for them or not? And secondly, he should stop saying "Giant fans" and just replace it with "me".
