Ruland went 2-28 during his last year at Iona and was recruiting zero talent. He was/is a terrible X's and O's guy. He inherited players from Tim Welsh and made the tournament twice with that group. After that, he had a talented group of kids who underachieved before finally making the tournament when a bunch of them were seniors. In short, the guy is not a good head coach. His firing couldn't possibly have had anything to do with his 81-99 record in his last six seasons as Iona's coach.

I got in the car halfway through their interview today, but Mike is going to have Gammo on weekly this season. I'd love to know what was said during the first part of the interview, because they both seemed pretty down on the Sox chances of competing this season. PG didn't think they would be able to swing Adrian Gonzalez, and thought that an impact OF would be what the FO was likely looking for at this point.

Once PG was done, Mike was saying that the Sox had quickly fallen far behind the Yanks and Rays (in the larger sense, not in the standings), and that wasn't likely to change, because they are "terrible offensive players". He of course then agreed with callers suggesting Youk moving to LF would open a spot for an impact 1B.

The last week of Sox games have been brutal. But there is nothing like listening to that smug douche for 15 minutes to make the perceived need for a slew of wins (NOW) seem 1000x more urgent.

I forgot my favorite part. During the next segment, a Yankee fan called in suggesting Girardi swap Johnson and Granderson, because Johnson wasn't hitting and when he walked, he clogged the bases. In (rightfully, for once) dismissing the caller, Mike started yelling, "You're talking about a handful of at bats!". Way to stay consistent.

I heard a promo for the show today that advertised Gammons appearing on Tuesdays at 5:05. It sounds like this will be a regular thing.

Mike has LT's loud mouthed attorney, Arthur Aidala, on right now. His first statement?..."Mike, we don't want to try this case in the media..." and then proceeds to tryy the case in the media. Aidala begins by stating LT specifically asked him to bring the facts to the people via The Mike Francesca Show since it's so respected. :rolleyes:

I do feel bad for Sid, he so desperately wants Mikes and everyone's approval, which brings out a semi nasty bully type response, at least from Mike.

Sid is an open book, you can see his feelings. He is so easy to toy with, that Mike just can't lay off.

Sid guest hosted a few Saturdays ago (it was during spring training if I remember correctly) on the FAN. His full time job is in Miami though.

Mike calling last night's loss for the Sox "very, very tough to get back up from" and also calling for the Yankees to start throwing at the Sox in retaliation. "I know it's not the Yankee way, but enough is enough."

Wait, what did Mike think they needed to retaliate for? Cerveli getting hit in the 9th? I didnt see the 9th inning but did he think that was intentional? I dont see Paps hitting someone with the game tied. What was the call for retaliation in reference to?

I seem to recall CC doing that a few weeks ago when he hit Pedroia. It didn't end well for him. :)

Just tuned in today to hear Kim Jones from the YES network on with Francesa. Talking about Beckett she said "He is just not a good guy so you don't feel bad for him struggling." I thought Sweeni Murti was the biggest yankee fan boy reporter, but I think Kim is trying to surpass him.

He also confuses Oswalt's opt out clause. Yes, he does have an opt out clause, which was negotiated for in his contract. But Phillips states any free agent who is traded during a multi-year can opt out any any time if he is traded during the contract. I'm almost certain that isn't true and only applies if you are traded in the first year of the contract. Phillips stated any player who has a contract and is traded can do it at any time.

I'm glad you posted this. I had the show on DirecTv in the backround while I was working but listened during that interview. I rewound it twice to make sure I heard him correctly. I thought I was misinterpreting something because he stated it like it wasn't an aspect of Oswalt's contract, but of EVERY contract. How the hell was this guy a GM? I know he was lousy at his job but one would think Phillips would at least know the rules.

It looks like I owe Steve Phillips an apology. Although the rule does not currently exist, it did exist under the old CBA, and anyone who signed their deal prior to 10/23/2006 is grandfathered in. Oswalt signed his in 08/06.

Where he lost me was when he said Oswalt was a top five pitcher in all of MLB. Not only is that not true now, but I don't know if it was ever true. He's good and has been very good, but he's not in that elite class.

If you're a team that's close and needs that stud pitcher to make a run, I could see considering trading a pitcher like Strasburg for 2-plus years of him (TNSTAAPP and all). But Oswalt is not that stud, the Nationals are not that close, and Strasburg just means too much to that franchise at this point. He had a decent point buried under his awful talent evaluation.

Oswalt was definitely a top five MLB pitcher in his prime. From 2004-7 he averaged 229 innings a year with a 139 ERA+.

Of course Oswalt hasn't been that guy for two years though he's having a nice start to 2010. Classic bad GM'ing - find a guy who was really good and assume he'll carry that through his mid-30s.

Yeah, should have looked that up, but he was 5th, 4th, and 5th in NL pitcher WAR from '05 to '07. Although in all of MLB, he was 8th, 8th, and out of the top ten in that same span. The greater point stands, though - he's not that guy anymore.

EDIT - Maybe I'd rather not hear it. He just suggested the Mets could get Vernon Wells, Ricky Romero, and Brett Cecil for Angel Pagan and spare parts. Somehow he's under the delusion Toronto is desperate to rid themselves of that contract, enough to trade two of their best arms.

I know Mike is your typical entitled NY fan (ie, other teams exist to benefit the Mets and Yankees) - whether he admits it or not - but this is ludicrous.

That's a terrible deal for both teams.

For the Jays, they totally torpedo their season for Angel Pagan, an OK starter. Maybe. The Mets are the new Yankees in terms of having a farm system so barren they're prepared to turn anybody into a top prospect, even a 28 year old.

For the Mets, they get ANOTHER huge backloaded contract that might be a giant hole of suck. The Mets have enough money tied up in five guys, they don't need to take on more. Wells needs to show he's not a replacement level player for more than two months to change that.

edit: Wells is making $21 million from 2011-2014. It's just a terrible deal for both teams.

I know this is way off topic and I apologize beforehand, but your "entitlement" comment made me post this. Just the other day I saw a NY Newsday (or NY Post) sportswriter that I never heard of on ESPNews debating whether LeBron should come to NY or not. His reply was literally, "Of course he should. If you win one title in NY, it's worth four or five somewhere else because it means more in NY. Look at Mark Messier, nobody even remembers that he played for the Oilers." I was at a restaurant so I couldn't rewind it to see the guy's name but I could not get over that statement.

He just mentioned NBA and that he'll talk about it "in a little while." Too little too late for me. Mentioned NY TV ratings last night- NHL did a 3 and NBA did a 9. That's the extent of NBA talk to this point.

EDIT - And Jesus H. Christ on a cracker, 1-877-CARSFORKIDS is driving me insane.

I miss the old days of Mad Dog and Mike breaking down the NBA Finals. I remember them talking about the Bulls-Jazz series from the 90s and it was the one sports show that I could listen to for more than an hr at a time. They also did a good job in 2008 with the Celtics -Lakers. Ever since Mad Dog left, it has become a baseball show because NY is a "baseball town" according to Mike. He would rather talk about a trade that he made up that has no chance of happening than talk about the NBA Finals. I hope Mad Dog comes back some day. Maybe Sirius will go under.
