Misc. Pats Offseason News

Anyone sign today that the Pats missed out on? A lot of defensive players in areas where the Pats have depth already, a couple of offensive lineman, and some league average tight ends. Pittman decided to stay put. Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Gardner Minshew were not coming here for various reasons.

Seems like there are still plenty of options to upgrade the roster.
Some of the edge guys would have been useful.

The Pats front 7 is basically Judon, Barmore, Tavai and a bunch of not much unless White takes a big leap forward. It’s weird that it isn’t talked about more. They need DL, EDGE and LB help and seem to have missed out on most of the guys who would be better than the meager in house options

Still a few out there but I’d be surprised if they signed Hunter (or that he’d want to come).

Hunter will go where the money is. Big time free agents take the big deals. Unless the deals are really close, Hunter will be going to the highest bidder.

I don’t really want to end up with Nix, but I think this is probably a “due diligence” move, just in case someone blows them away with an offer for #3.

Additionally, it's Oregon's pro day, not just Nix's. Oregon is a big time talent producer, of course the Pats will be there.

Every team will probably be represented. I'm interested in Troy Franklin. Could drop to R3 and be a nice pick.

yeah, though QB coach going does likely mean he's there to see Nix.
Unless he's drafted in like round 5 I want no part of Nix, I see zero upside in him.

Yep, these tweets are so damn misleading. Here's a bunch of names, in addition to Nix, that will be out there:

Everyone who took part in the NFL Combine; Bo Nix, Troy Franklin, Bucky Irving, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Evan Williams, Khyree Jackson, and Brandon Dorlus, is expected to be in attendance.

Other former Ducks who weren’t invited to the combine also have the chance to work out at the Pro Day; Steven Jones, Steve Stephens IV, Jamal Hill, and more.

Meh... you don't send your QB coach to watch Bucky Irving or Brandon Dorlus, they're clearly doing work on Nix.

Meh, what else is the QB coach supposed to be doing on March 12th when there is only one pro day taking place that has any talent? These guys don't just attend pro days for one specific player or one specific draft. They're taking notes for the future too. When McDaniels had the #7 pick, and Jimmy G. under contract, he was still attending pro days and evaluating QB's he had no chance of getting in the draft, like Stroud and Bryce Young.

And beyond that, part of the scouting process is closing your eyes and trying to see the future.

“Some of this is you have to look at the traits that they have and then project them into your system with your development and say, ‘Where is this guy going to be three years from now?” McDaniels said.

That’s because the next two years belong to Jimmy Garoppolo, a quarterback McDaniels once nurtured and then thrust into the air to see him fly. Garoppolo was the Patriots’ second-round pick in the 2014 draft and sat behind Tom Brady for his first two seasons. He replaced a suspended Brady for two starts in 2016 before the 49ers traded for him at the 2017 trade deadline.

For all we know, McCartney could be in the middle of some sort of west coast swing to look at other guys, meet with/talk to college coaches and on and on. My only point is the implication that the Pats have an interest in Nix because their QB coach is attending the Oregon pro day is nothing more than click bait shit. It's not like McCartney doesn't also have experience coaching players other than QB's, and I'm sure his input will be welcome. He's been an offensive assistant and tight ends coach in his career too.

Oh I don't think I read much into it beyond... they want to take a look at Nix. I was just pointing out that is why McCartney is there in all likelihood. I don't think it's some tell that they plan to trade back for Nix or anything (I really don't want Nix), just that Nix isn't incidental to the guys they sent.

Edit- I would guess McCartney will go to basically every draft eligible QB's pro-day... top 3.. yep, Penix, McCarthy, Pratt, Rattler... everybody.

BUT DID THEY BRING THEIR QB COACH????
Why do they even call it "Bo Nix's pro day?"

That's what's driving me fucking insane. It was the Oregon Ducks pro day. They could have upwards of 4-5 guys from Oregon drafted BEFORE Nix. I guess calling it the "Taliese Fuago" or "Jackson Powers-Johnson" pro day doesn't get enough clicks.

Interesting that the new regime has already:

Re signed Hunter Henry (Bill signing)
Re signed Kendrick Bourne (Bill signing)
Re signed Mike Onwenu (Bill pick)
Re signed Kyle Dugger (Bill pick)
Re signed Josh Uche (Bill pick)

Signed Brissett (Bill pick years ago)

They made a big deal about moving on from BB's ways but are keeping a ton of his players. Obviously they are drafting a new QB but that might also mean that when BB wanted to trade Mac after last season they probably should have listened, since by bringing back so many of their own players from a 4-13 team they may figure the QB was hugely responsible for the problems this past season.

No real point here, I just found it curious.

So those players were:
Dominic Easley (medical/bad)
Jimmy G (traded)
Malcom Brown (walked)
Jordan Richards (traded)
Geneo Grissom (bad/cut)
Vincent Valentine (bad/cut)
Jacoby Brissett (traded)
Joe Thuney (tagged)
Cyrus Jones (bad/cut)
Antonio Garcia (NFI/Cut never played in the NFL)
Derek RIvers (bad/cut)
Isaiah Wynn (injuries/walked)
Sony Michel (traded)
Duke Dawson (traded/bad)
N'Keal Harry (traded/bad)
Joejuan Williams (bad)
Chase Winovich (traded)
Damien Harris (walked)
Cajuste (injured/waived)

So you have sine cuts, some injuries, a lot of trades.
Only guys who made it to FA after their rookie deals as viable players were:
Malcolm Brown
Damien Harris
Isaiah Wynn

Lot of busts, career ending injuries or guys traded,

If this isn’t the BB the GM got BB the coach fired! I’m not sure what it could be. You omitted Jordan Richards (bad) and Winovich (bad) and Thuney (All Pro). No need to pay Thuney when we can waste a 1st on Strange.

What a disaster that list is.

If the new regime trades up and selects a place kicker in round 4 that's when it will get real.

I didn't omit them.... Richards and Winovich were traded (for a late pick and Mack wilson respectively) Thuney got tagged. I guess if you go a year further they let him walk.

Seems simple. There were about 70(?) rostered, IR'd, and practice squadders last season. They didnt all suck.

You omitted they were bad and traded which you pointed out for others who were bad and the best one they tagged and let walk and he was an All Pro. That entire list is a disaster for a GM.

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't, I was saying that he generally cut bait via trade, and that the past wasn't generally a case of Bill not re-signing players so much as not many good players making it to FA (they either got traded or were bad/injured), so the post quoting his past when asked whether Bill would have re-signed guys was pointless.

Yeah, this isn’t the best thread for it but I will say this again: the most likely reason Bill’s drafting and then eventually offensive system fell apart over time was that the circle of people he could trust and delegate things to got smaller and smaller as guys left, were brought with guys who left or retired.

And when you are trying to win year after year you don’t spend nearly as much time replacing your coaches and personnel guys as you do finding players, so the bench gets shallower and shallower and you do stupid shit like hire guys for jobs they aren’t qualified to do, and taking the word of other coaches over the people you hired to do that job. So it’s not really a surprise that by the end, the team was mostly good at the stuff Bill could coach up himself: playing defense.

I’m not mad about it because the guy gave me so much joy as a fan. And, it’s a super human thing to lose the people closest to you as you get older. It just was.

Well Jennings just re-signed, so there's another talking point for us. 4 picks from the 2020 draft have been re-signed or tagged.

It sure does look like missing at the QB position overshadowed all the great work done elsewhere.

The narrative around the 2020 draft for a while was the busting out of the 2 tight ends picked in the 3rd round. Glad to see that has shifted, but there was a period of time where this draft was looking bad. But Bill's problems went well beyond Mac and the 2020 draft; the crucial 2022 draft is looking, shall we say, marginal at best.

At the end of the day, Dugger-Uche-Jennings-Onwenu seems like a pretty good draft. They blew 2 third rounds picks but didn't draft at all in round 1. It broke the long string of not resigning guys, too.

This is more general NFL offseason news, but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

The rule change proposals are out. The most interesting one is Philly's suggestion to let a team that has scored retain possession by electing a 4th and 20 at their 20 yard line (instead of an onside kick). Too gimmicky to pass, but interesting to think about.

The two that will get talked about, I assume, are getting a third challenge so long as you have at least one successful challenge, and getting to challenge fouls in the last 2 minutes.

Grr, challenges.
When I am King of the sports world, my first act in office will be to decree one set of rules for all professional sports regarding challenges. To wit, each game will have one addition referee sitting in the control room watching the main broadcast feed. He/she will have direct contact with the lead official and will have full discretion to stop the clock and call for a review. The review official will have 30 seconds to check an alternate angle and make a ruling.

Hired! This is basically VAR in football football.

Challenges are just an admission that the refs are so bad they have to trick coaches into challenges. They are just pushing their incompetence on the teams and creating this bizarre remedy system where teams have to wonder "is this the shitty call that will determine the game or is it the next one?"
