Yet another arbitrary NFL rule that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. If the same hit happens but the player stretches sideways his forward progress is still stopped but the clock stops. The player gets forward progress and the ball is dead at that EXACT spot on the field, not that yard line. So if a player is driven backwards the ball is placed at the most forward point, wherever that place is.
I feel like I have an ice cream headache watching that.L M A O, that was a highlight reel final play. Zeke gets destroyed at the line, play is over in half a second.
You wonder how the game may have played out if McCarthy had a spine and went for it on that 4th and 5 tied at 9Jerrah deserves this. Keeps supporting a shitty head coach.
This will do it for McCarthy.Jerrah deserves this. Keeps supporting a shitty head coach.
That was hilarious. Only thing better was Turpin getting destroyed after catching the pass too.L M A O, that was a highlight reel final play. Zeke gets destroyed at the line, play is over in half a second.
Hook and lateral to Zeke I assume. But he got clobbered. How was that supposed to work?
So imagine that it’s 3rd down and say 30 seconds left. No timeouts. Receiver catches the ball right at the line to gain near the sideline and is driven back a yard where he lands out of bounds.Yeah imo the spirit of the rule is to prevent unnatural plays to stop the clock but getting walloped back when you are very much running forward at the moment is not in that spirit.
It's a variation of the "forward progress" rule. If forward progress was stopped in bounds, it's treated like a tackle in bounds.Crazy. Never heard of that.
Some kind of hook and ladder, I would guess. Just got completely blown up.i still don’t understand what was supposed to happen on that play
It's probably something that came to McCarthy in a dream.i still don’t understand what was supposed to happen on that play
Hook and slaughter. That was more hook and laughter.
seemed like all hook, no ladderi still don’t understand what was supposed to happen on that play
NFC teams that have made an NFC Championship in 21st century:
49ers
Eagles
Giants
Bears
Packers
Vikings
Falcons
Panthers
Saints
Buccaneers
Cardinals
Rams
Seahawks
Still waiting:
COWBOYS, Comanders, Lions
At least the Colts play was a miscommunication with special teams players who don't practice that all the time. McCarthy was very deliberate with calling this play both before and after a 49ers timeout. Just stupendous.Griff Whalen is off the hook!
Ok this explanation makes much more intuitive sense to me. Thank you for laying it out like this, honestly. I am always snarky about there being too many weird rules but this makes sense. So imagine that it’s 3rd down and say 30 seconds left. No timeouts. Receiver catches the ball right at the line to gain near the sideline and is driven back a yard where he lands out of bounds.
It’s not fair to both stop the clock AND give the offense the first down. You either have forward progress in the field of play, or spot the ball back where he went out of bounds.
You mean if the player is hit sideways? Sure, but that’s never forward progress. You need to be driven clearly backwards for forward progress.Yet another arbitrary NFL rule that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. If the same hit happens but the player stretches sideways his forward progress is still stopped but the clock stops.
Cowboys defense really impressed me tonight, but it's really hard to see them winning a Super Bowl with Dak. Even if he's better than he was tonight, they need to take a real stab at replacing Amari Cooper this offseason - Gallup and Schultz are fine, but like Buffalo with everyone that isn't Diggs, the dropoff after Lamb hurts them a lot.It got very dumb at the end but these are 2 talented teams.
Agreed.Ok this explanation makes much more intuitive sense to me. Thank you for laying it out like this, honestly. I am always snarky about there being too many weird rules but this makes sense.
