Shocked that the NFL has not sent our a press release on this yet... Its also unknown if this is the original (and lost) CBS tape

According to online listings, NFL Network plans to "re-broadcast" the original Super Bowl on Friday 1/15 at 8pm ET. While I have seen no press release providing any details, here is the entry on the NFLN online schedule for this 2-hour program:

"Super Bowl I Re-Broadcast Event" - NFL Films presents the first ever re-broadcast of Super Bowl I on the 50th Anniversary of the game. Featuring special guests and never before seen footage, see the game that started it all when the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL squared off against the Green Bay Packers of the NFL.
while the DirecTV program guide describes it as follows:
Super Bowl I - The Lost Game

The re-broadcast of the game that started it all on the 50th Anniversary of the game featuring Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL against the Green Bay Packers of the NFL.
The use of the terms "re-broadcast" and "Lost Game" along with the claim of "never before seen footage" suggest that this airingmight include (at least in part) the discovered tape of the original CBS telecast which was restored by the Paley Center, but which has never been available to the public.

So why did they put quotations marks around "re-broadcast"? I hate that.

I think it might be because its not an official complete broadcast copy, but a recording found in some guys attic back in the 00's, IIRC. I guess the tape is only about 90 minutes long and is missing portions of the game. I am curious how they are going to fill in the gaps.

Television was in relative infancy 50 years ago. And the Super Bowl -- it was a novelty nobody knew quite what to make of and nobody dreaming what it has become.

Still it is shocking the stuff television taped over or otherwise did not save. Even granting that technology was primitive and very expensive, shocking. Because in many ways a much more thoughtful age, it is as if nobody had any historical sensitivity.

"Hey these tapes aren't cheap. We're in the business of making money not historical documents, erase that shit and tape the next show" - some mid-level executive when they decided to re-use and tape over things.

This happened at NASA too. It's embarrassing how much of the moon landing tapes were either lost or recorded over.

The first Super Bowl wasn't even sold out. It was nothing even remotely like the Super Bowl today.
I remember it pretty well. It was basically an exhibition game. No one gave the AFL a chance in hell, but this little Babe Parilli loving Boston Patriots fan was rooting hard for the underdog. Hard to believe that was 50 years ago.

To this day, I can't work up proper hate for the Jets. Joe Namath conquered the big bad bullies and beat the NFL in Super Bowl 3. One of the greatest non Boston sports days in my life .

My first super bowl memory is the Jets win. I remember the hubbub about Namath's guarantee more than the actual game, but I was also an ALF rooter and couldn't properly hate the Jets until Ryan became their coach. Now that he's gone, I'm back to only really hating the Cowboys.

I'm eager to watch this as a game in its entirety, not just as highlights. I think it will be fascinating not only in terms of broadcast quality and methods, but also for the changes in players, tactics, coaching, pace of play, etc.

First memories of Super Bowls might be an interesting thread unto itself. I'm guessing my first memories are likely tied to the Vikings who were my favorite non-Patriots team because purple was my favorite color.

A guy I was working with back then was from Baltimore or around there and was offering 18 - 19 points if you took the Jets. I passed, not ever really being a gambling man. Dummy me. Curt Gowdy did that SB.

Pretty good show, but the crowd camera back then found Norm van Brocklin in the stands, nice closeup of him and none of the 6 or 7 analysts mentioned him. Mooch at least should have recognized him.
