Seems dumb. Russ is short-term compared to Hurts.
Teams don't trade players because they are upset about being replaced. This is just the team doing crap PR work for giving up on a player they wildly overdrafted.
If they thought he was good they aren't trading him for nothing because he's doesn't want to be in a (fake) competition with Russ, who the Steelers 100% promised the starting gig to in order to get him to sign.

Breer followed this up by saying... "no promises on starter, but Russ would get 1st crack" SURE... totally buy that it was gonna be an open competition.... sure.

I cannot believe the Steelers are going this deeply all-in on Russ.
I mean what's really deep about it? Pickett was always a reach, and they've reached the point of identifying that he isn't your guy. If anything they earn bonus points there imo for not letting themselves sink too far into the sunk cost fallacy hole most do when drafting a 1st round QB.

Russ at $1.2m is about as low risk and easy to move on from as it gets, and looks like the best value free agent contract we'll see handed out to a QB. From a Jets fan POV it's essentially our Aaron Rodgers acquisition projection flyer from last year minus all the massive amount of downside baggage that had to come with Rodgers. I'd prefer that in a heartbeat.

I'm more questioning that OC hire there, and the decision to trade Diontae away for peanuts just so you could reportedly turn around and try to sign an older Tyler Boyd?

My head is spinning from these moves. I'm not used to this team making so many changes. Wonder if Fields is now in play?
The Steelers are basically doing what it seemed like. Bill wanted to with Mac last year. Trade him while he still has some value and bring in a veteran while you find the next quarterback. Crazy to think we might have been able to do something before last season with Mac & sign Mayfield.

I get picking a guy you like and missing. It happens. The aggressive PR job the Steelers did from owner down to the towel boy to hype up Kenny was shameless. They were all united on declaring he is the guy and they were all in - until they could sign Russ for the minimum. What's the old Judge Judy line? "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining".

Steelers fans are going to insufferable when it comes to Fields.

edit: 6th round pick and can be a 4th with playing time

basically a Mac deal

Hmm. Just as a backup and then gone? They’re not gonna sign him if he doesn’t play much are they? Interesting

Are we suuuuure they're going to keep Russ around? I wonder if the Russ signing was a hedge against this trade not working out.

If he doesn’t play enough, then Pats got a better return on Mac???

Wasn't someone suggesting he might go for a late 1st/early 2nd rounder a month or two ago? Possibly Schefter? Oof. A conditional pick like this seems like the right move for both sides.

Fields has to play 51% of offensive plays for the pick to become a 4th.

Edit - late to the party

Geez, I probably would have taken that deal and passed on Brissett. Granted, if you are about to draft your QB of the future, maybe it’s not ideal to have a guy like Fields, who thinks he should be starting, as has backup.

Fields carries himself as a consummate pro. He’s going to say some nice things about Chicago and his teammates, talk about how he’s ready to compete with and learn from Russ. Then Fields is going to show up in camp in great shape and give Russ his first real competition in years.

I don’t get why some other QB-desperate team didn’t offer up a 5th or something? I’m very high on Fields but this seems like a bad return for him.
Probably the 22M 5th year option they have to pick up in like a month. You're trading him for 1 year because you aren't picking that up so it killed his value.

If you’re desperate for a QB, chances are you’re drafting high enough to take someone with more upside and who is going to be cost controlled for a while

Fields only made sense for teams with old/mediocre veterans who are drafting too low to get any of the top guys. Which left Seattle, Pittsburgh and maybe New Orleans.

If Fields was under contract for another year or two, it probably would have been more demand.

basically nobody wants to pay him his next deal and they don't want to bring him in have him be... okay? And then feel pressure to sign him. Fields' problem is that right now he's not that great and a lot of people think his ceiling is actually fairly low. Basically a worse passing better running Daniel Jones, and they'd rather either roll out someone better now, or a guy with similar or higher potential with less years in the league (so hypothetically more quick growth potential, plus cheap years). If this was last year I bet he goes for more with 2 years to figure things out.

Denver made some sense if they had a different coach

Vegas also made sense with Getsy. I'm surprised they didn't do it for this price.

Only if Getsy thought he was good. Had a front row seat and said.. No thanks

Edit- I wasn't a fan of what Getsy did last year, he started off with an offense that Fields really struggled with and didn't play to his strengths, then adjusted late which was better. But I don't know that he would go someplace new and take Fields again who couldn't run his first choice offense.

That must be the case because the price was very low and they don't have a QB. Just surprising is all given the connection and the possibility to build on last year. But really it's that Vegas doesn't have much in the building to get anyone excited.

where the darn libs live
You're "very high" on Fields or very high? Dude is a dumpster fire.
I'm very high on him. I'm not very high.

Clearly he isn't a great passer (or even an average one) but he's one of the best running QBs ever and has some statlines that no one's ever had. He's also had a truly terrible offensive supporting cast his entire career and his coaching has been below average at best.

I feel like the right coach and scheme could open up a lot for him.

The Steelers made the playoffs last year with a qb situation nearly as bad as us. I’m pretty low on Fields (I think he’s only deep playoff run interesting on an SF level roster that wants to play ground and pound on offense, which is to say he’s not the difference maker himself), but I love this deal for them. They have two QBs better than Pickett and a nonzero amount of upside (honestly with both). I don’t see it turning into a Lombardi, but you could do so, so much worse as a team that is only a step above 9-8 purgatory.

This is the same Fields that called out his coaches via the media and then had to backtrack that? Thus consummate pro?

He said this after a week 2 loss to Tampa:

“I liked the times I felt like I was in a rhythm. Things I didn’t like. I felt like I was playing robotic. My goal this week is to say F it and just play football. That’s when I play my best when I am out there playing free. I am going to go out there and be me.”

[Asked why he was playing robotically]

"You know, could be coaching, I think," Fields said. "At the end of the day, they are doing their job when they are giving me what to look at, but at the end of the day, I can't be thinking about that when the game comes. I prepare myself throughout the week, and then when the game comes, it's time to play free at that point. Thinking less and playing more."
Poorly word, but he wasn’t wrong. Getsy drew up 4 designed runs across the first 2 games this season. He was giving Fields game plans that didn’t fit his talent. A pro tells the truth.
