If I’m Cohen I’m having him walk into one of those wind booths where you grab money. Then I’d show him around the area adjacent to the stadium, maybe the most culturally Asian area in the US. Then I’m lining up his sponsors to give a dog and pony show on how he’ll be connected to Ohtani-like sponsorships.

Then I’m showing him pictures of Yankees fans, all of whom are disgusting.
Now that's funny!

"Yamamoto must make a decision by Jan. 4, and at least the Red Sox appear to be in play. After four years avoiding the top of the market, that counts for something."

Let's hang a banner
That’s one way to interpret what he’s doing there. Another, and one that is significantly more in keeping with his history, is that he’s simply taking yet another shot at the Red Sox for their perceived cheapness.

Also in the story: All the alleged $300M bids for Yoshinobu Yamamoto — that’s inaccurate, sources tell ESPN. Teams have been asked not to discuss terms yet. But that could change today when bidding, sources said, is expected to begin. Now is when Yamamoto's free agency gets real.

I don’t think the Red Sox are even being considered at this point. I think it’s Dodgers, Mets, Yankees.

I agree with this - but I've kind of always agreed with this.

The reasons (for me at least) are because Boston never made sense (from the perspective of this particular player), short of him being incredibly close to Yoshida.

If it was "just money" and went until someone stopped bidding, he's going to the Mets.

If it was about money and almost literally anything else (other than Yoshida) such as "positioned to win at the MLB level"; or "Japanese ex-pat community" or "proximity to Japan" then there is not one of those scenarios where the Red Sox make the most sense as a fit against the other main competitors.

I don't pretend to know what makes YY tick, but if he's anything like most athletes, one of those mentioned above would play at least some role if everyone is offering you $300+ million.

It's kind of funny how people are trying to guess what Yamamoto wants and values and cares about, since none of us has any clue about that. Just something to talk about I guess, but it's pretty silly to try to decide what his motivation for choosing one place over another would be and then extrapolate that this is why he will or won't be signing with us. We just can't know any of that.

One thing we do know is that wherever he signs, he will be an extremely wealthy young star athlete, whose life will be vastly different than any of ours. Things about one place or another that would matter a lot to us probably won't matter to him at all.

For example, travel-- he's not going to be standing in line at the departure gate with us chumps, he'll probably be flying private chartered jets whenever he goes anywhere. If he wants family and friends to come visit, he can charter a jet for them. Or if he has a day off maybe he takes a luxury helicopter to some resort and back the next day. Things like the number of airline flights to Japan and back or whatever will be pretty meaningless.

Housing will be unlike what any of us have and unlike what most of us could probably even imagine. This city is dirty or that one has lots of traffic or crime, whatever. He'll have multiple luxury gated homes in the most exclusive private areas. Good restaurants of whatever type? He won't be eating dinner in the main dining room of many restaurants, he'll be using secret entrances and private dining rooms, when he's not having his personal chef make gourmet versions of whatever he wants whenever he wants. It's just going to be so different from any of our own experiences and preferences that's it's hard to imagine.

He'll be living the life of the super rich and famous. You can do that in any of the cities that are in on him.

We have Yoshida already here and they were teammates, maybe that's an advantage? Or maybe he always disliked Yoshida. Or maybe they were best buds, who knows? It could be a slight advantage in that at least Yoshida just made the same exact transition and now probably knows all the best places to live and eat and hang out when you are a super-rich young international celebrity athlete. Other teams will have people to recommend that too of course, but maybe it's better coming from someone you already know and who knows you. And Yoshida knows specifically how the longer season and longer travel can affect you and has just had to make some changes in his own training to deal with it. That would be nice to have from a guy you'e already played with, who speaks your language and has learned first-hand very recently about the challenges of moving from Japan to the US as a major league player.

But of course Yamamoto might not care about any of that either. Maybe other things are way more important to him.

The Red Sox are changing translators for Yoshida.

Is that good or bad in terms of trying to attract Yamamoto? No impact at all? No way any of us would know.

We can't know any of the actual motivations he has for making his decision. Maybe his parents gave him a Buster Posey t-shirt when he was 10 and it's always been his lifelong dream to play for the Giants. Nobody knows nothing. (Too late, already posted when I was typing this long screed.)

Sounds like nobody knows anything.
Seriously - It's pretty wild how different all these reports are. And if there aren't even offers yet, what could all the claims about "favorites" or "strong pushes" be based on at all?

It would worry me if all the front runners except the Sox got a second meeting before the offers were due.

It was Robert Herjavec going to Fenway after all!

I mean, they have direct contact with
Because Passan is saying that the bidding starts now and we know he’s been in two cities, Los Angeles and New York. That with the Carrabis and Lou tweet makes me think that’s the list.

Sort of ... in. the poll thread, more than two-thirds of posters think he's signing somewhere else, so the pessimism isn't really sudden

I am assuming that every post in this thread implicitly acknowledges that we dont know what we're talking about. He might hate haiku, for example.

On the other hand, Yamamoto as a yute has grown up with the Red Sox and the Giants winning the WS a lot, so maybe one of those teams is the one he's been musing about playing for over the past decade?

If I have to bet on one specific team to land him vs. a wager on the field of 5-6 other teams, I would wager on the field.

Regarding the translator being replaced. Why don't they let YY bring in his own and put him on the staff? I know there are limitations on who can be in the dugout in uniform, but it seems like an easy move to just bring in someone YY feels comfortable with. Didn't Dice-K bring his own interpretor, although I remember that translator had trouble with nuances of American english or something.

Sure. So he'd almost assuredly pick the team offering roughly the same amount that is the 4th largest Japanese population in the nation (SF) and happens to be 3 hours closer to Japan as opposed to the one that (I have no idea where Boston is, but it isn't in the top 6) and is 3 hours further.

I've tried to think of some reasons that are more than fan wishcasting, believe me, but to me there really is just no reason for him to pick the Red Sox over any of the other teams offering similar amounts of money. I obviously hope to be incredibly wrong about this.

I picked the Giants in the poll, FWIW. Maybe LeBron did some heavy recruiting work for FSG, though.

It's reasonable to think that LeBron hates San Francisco. Bronny is at USC (they hate Stanford and vice versa), and with the rivalry with the Dubs and all... This is easily the most plausible way that Yamamoto ends up in Boston. Bravo.

Maybe....this is why the Sox let this be known. YY, bring your own interpetor when you sign with us.

Didn't YY confirm he was coming to Fenway for a visit? Do did I make that up?

Flight time Boston to Tokyo 13 hours 55 minutes versus San Francisco to Tokyo 11 hours 20 minutes. Two and a half hour difference shouldn't really affect decisions. Besides, YY will be perched in first class all the way and will probably include adjacent seats in his reservation.

Sure, but if all things are equal otherwise, who would actually choose to spend 2.5hours extra hours flying.

*I'd think the vast difference in Japanese ex-pat community would play a much bigger role, personally. Though for all I know, he wants to be further away from all things Japan. In which case the Sox are clearly in the lead.*

But just looking at what seems to be "typical" in terms of what are mentioned as deciding factors for a lot of athletes, and Boston doesn't win out on any of them. If it were possible to just blow this offer out of the water the way they did with Yoshida, I'd feel more like Boston stood a chance. I just don't think that is possible in this exact scenario.

Who knows, maybe Henry has already offered him 12/$450m and he's just going back to see if anyone wants to top it. I sincerely doubt it, though.

He won't be living in Japan during the season and jetting in between starts. It's just a few times a year probably. But as you say, there are probably other more important factors like the ex-pat community.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
As Passan reported, the real offers haven't come in yet. Let's wait to see how this plays out.
I don't know if that's been widely reported or not, but it just strikes me as wrong to suggest years and numbers haven't been discussed with Wolfe.

I think it's likely YY has a short list of preferred cities and teams and his agent has a good idea of what clubs are actually in play and which one's aren't.

I was going off of this which said terms have not been discussed per the player's/agent request.
