investing so many roster spots on special teams only guys is so dumb in todays league.
They have what, 6 roster spots "invested" on special teams only guys? Is that really more than other teams? Slater, Davis, Schooler, Ryland, Baringer, Cardona. A few other guys that don't really play the field, but they're more on the roster because someone has to be the bottom of the roster guys that never play and not because the team is invested in them to do anything.

Plus Board. And Christian Elliss, who I didn’t even realize they picked up a couple weeks ago.

Looking at players drafted after Chad Ryland, see mostly backups, special teams players, and players sitting on practice squads or out of the league entirely. OK, there's Nacua, a player that teams passed on another 64 times after Ryland was selected. Demario Douglas and Dontayvion Wicks are the others that sort of stand out, and QB Aidan O'Connell. So honestly, the value given up by drafting a kicker at slot 112 is not as high as some here seem to think. The concern is that the kicker may not be very good, but perhaps an offseason of work could help.
K (and P, even) impact the game enough that picking a great one would be a fine use of such a pick. The problem, to belabor the obvious, is that it seems to be really, really hard to project that kind of success for these guys.

Due to their longevity they turn over less. There are 32 spots and probably 26-28 of them are safe year over year. So you’re looking to project which of the 100+ kickers theoretically available in the draft (Vinaiteiri was from South Dakota St, these guys could be anywhere) is going to be one of the maybe two or three guys, if that, from his graduating class to not only stick in the NFL but be above average. The more common method of having huge numbers of UDFA cycle through endless tryouts with multiple teams until the cream eventually rises seems the least bad way of getting one of these guys, if you think on it.
