I think Cashman will still probably add here but I wanted to get a sense of where they stood, with some comings and goings already this winter.

Age, options remaining:

MLB as of now:

Luis Gil (R, 25, 1) (long guy)
Nick Ramirez (L, 34, 1)
Scott Effross (R, 30, 3)
Victor Gonzalez (L, 28, 0)
Ian Hamilton (R, 28, 1)
Tommy Kahnle (R, 34, 0)
Jonathan Loaisiga (R, 29, 0)
Clay Holmes (R, 30, 0)

AAA:

Ron Marinaccio (R, 28, 1)
Matt Krook (L, 29, 2)
Yerry De Los Santos (R, 26, 2) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)
Anthony Misiewicz (L, 29, 1) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)

Prospects who could potentially be a factor:

Danny Watson (R, 23)
Edgar Barclay (L, 25)
Bailey Dees (R, 24)
Jack Neely (R, 23)

That is with Clayton Beeter and Yoendrys Gomez stretching out as starters in AAA, but either or both could be long relievers also, both on the 40 man.

I asked the NYY prospect guys on Twitter who I was missing here, they added:

Tanner Myatt (R, 25)
Ryan Anderson (L, 25)
Luis Velasquez (R, 22)

Another minor league deal addition, he pitched for the Cubs and the Pirates for the past six years and is 29:

"Righty reliever Duane Underwood Jr. is signing a minor league contract with the Yankees, with an MLB spring invite"

I think Cashman's last major offseason move will be one more guy here, I think Jordan Hicks is the best fit, but also I could see Robert Stephenson or maybe a Keynan Middleton reunion.

Hicks and Stephenson off the board, Middleton and Hector Neris (who will be pricy, 2/24?) still around.

Also a Wandy reunion has been rumored, and (my idea) old buddy David Robertson is still very good at 38, very curious to see which way Cashman goes or if he even tries to sign two (Middleton/Robertson combo?). Again this is a case where NY I think would actually prefer a two year deal to a one year deal with all of Holmes, Loaisiga and Kahnle hitting FA, but of course that only works if it is the right guy.

It's looking less and less likely that NY will add a reliever on a guaranteed major league deal but they have added a bunch of arms since my mid-December update above, so let's do a refresh here.

MLB as of now:

Luke Weaver (R, 30, 0) (long guy)
Nick Ramirez (L, 34, 1)
Scott Effross (R, 30, 3)
Victor Gonzalez (L, 28, 0)
Ian Hamilton (R, 28, 1)
Tommy Kahnle (R, 34, 0)
Jonathan Loaisiga (R, 29, 0)
Clay Holmes (R, 30, 0)

AAA:

Luis Gil (R, 25, 1) (long guy)
Cody Poteet (R, 29, 3)
Cody Morris (R, 27, 2) (long guy)
Matt Gage (L, 31, 1)
Ron Marinaccio (R, 28, 1)
Matt Krook (L, 29, 2)
Yerry De Los Santos (R, 26, 2) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)
Anthony Misiewicz (L, 29, 1) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)
Nick Burdi (R, 31, 3) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)

Prospects who could potentially be a factor:

Danny Watson (R, 23)
Edgar Barclay (L, 25)
Bailey Dees (R, 24)
Jack Neely (R, 23)

That is with Clayton Beeter and Yoendrys Gomez stretching out as starters in AAA, but either or both could be long relievers also, both on the 40 man. NY's two top pitching prospects also are not listed here, Will Warren and Chase Hampton, but also could be used as multi-inning guys to get their feet wet, depending on the other options.

Holmes, Loaisiga, Kahnle and Ferguson will all hit FA after 2024, so an interesting transition year for NY's bullpen.

Nick Burdi with a lot of early buzz, he has had two Tommy John surgeries plus thoracic outlet (!!!), but check out this quote from today:

“Aaron Boone was asked about Nick Burdi. He shook his head & laughed/smirked before adding, "You talk about stuff. I mean, that's great stuff."

Boone emphasized the arm slot that Burdi was throwing 98-100 mph from. “

I still like De Los Santos but he missed the start of camp for some reason and has only pitched once so far, and it didn't go well (although better than the box score looks). Dennis Santana has impressed also, early on.

Came here to see the reaction to Burdi's spring. This blurb caught my eye:

It’s not often a 31-year-old journeyman-type pitcher stands out in spring training but that’s what Burdi has done this spring with the Yankees. His stuff is overpowering but he’s rarely been healthy over the past decade; when he has pitched, he’s logged high strikeout and walk rates. He has a 98 to 100 mph fastball from a lower arm slot to go with a slider and changeup. He’s had two Tommy John surgeries and a surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome, so health concerns will always be there, but he’s struck out seven and walked one in three innings this spring as he tries to win a spot in the bullpen.

NY is still playing games with the back end of their roster. Today they added human white flag Tanner Tully to the MLB roster and DFAd Nick Ramirez, who turns 35 this summer but was pretty good for NY in 40+ innings last season.

OK trying to do a NY reliever depth update, leaving out guys like Beeter and Poteet who will both be in the AAA rotation. Starred players are not on the 40 man.

Luke Weaver (R, 30, 0)
Victor Gonzalez (L, 28, 0)
Ian Hamilton (R, 28, 1)
Caleb Ferguson (L, 27, 0)
Nick Burdi (R, 31, 3)
Jonathan Loaisiga (R, 29, 0)
Clay Holmes (R, 30, 0)

IL:

Scott Effross (R, 30, 3)
Tommy Kahnle (R, 34, 0)
Lou Trivino (R, 32, 0)

AAA:

Cody Morris (R, 27, 2) (long guy)
Ron Marinaccio (R, 28, 1)
*Dennis Santana (R, 28, 0)
Clayton Andrews (L, 27, 2)
*Duane Underwood Jr. (R, 29, 0)
*Yerry De Los Santos (R, 26, 2) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)
*Anthony Misiewicz (L, 29, 1) (minor league deal, non-40 man roster)

Prospects who could potentially be a factor:

*Danny Watson (R, 23)
*Edgar Barclay (L, 25)

Jake Cousins now too, not sure if he is on the 40 man or not yet. Ho was on a minor league deal with the White Sox, not on their 40 man, maybe with an April 1 out? We should know more soon.

Ian Hamilton is NY's best reliever right now. Three games so far, this is his combined line:

5.2 1 0 0 0 7

On just 61 total pitches! All three appearances have been close NY wins, 5-3, 5-4, 6-5.

How did NY get Hamilton? Minor league FA signing in Feb 2023, who forced his way onto the team last spring and hasn't stopped being great since. He makes 900K this year and NY has control of him through 2028.

NY only got him originally because he couldn’t stay healthy and the Giants released him.

“ He did not pitch in 2014 and 2015 due to injuries, and the Giants released him on May 30, 2015.“

NY signed him in early 2016.

This is his last year of control so his NY career could be over, too bad because he is generally so good when healthy.

Dennis Santana is up, he has no options so he has to stick or be released.
