I will say that amongst the worst things is that I doubt I will be able to enjoy playoff hockey the rest of the season. We'll see.

Watching this happen in slow motion fucking sucked.

Bergeron's career overlapped with the first year I really started getting into hockey and watching the B's. It'll suck to not see him suit it up again, but even more so to continually relive and wonder what could have been if a couple bounces broke more kindly over the past decade.

Fuck

It's going to gall me forever that a piece of shit like Patrick Kane has 3 Cups while Bergeron will only have one.

Last night I said to the partner that one of the things I hate most about this is that I know I'm going to go into work tomorrow and random coworkers who don't know the red line from high sticking will be superfans who want to talk to me about "what happened to the Bruins" and "boy that was rough" and "how nervous" they were and I'll want to tell them to fuck off and get the fuck away from me but I'll have to smile and make chit chat.
Took less than 5 minutes and there's a knock on the door and sure enough. Fuck me.

Yeah I will not be watching. I’ll check the box scores in the morning, and will root for whichever team comes out of the west. Hoping Seattle or Vegas or Dallas.

I'll trade ya.

CONS: I work with a bunch of Leafs and Habs fans who are always eager to take a chunk out of the Bruins at the best of times.

PRO: I just did a set of weekend overnights, so I'm deferring the pain to tomorrow.

Yeah @The Napkin , that truly may be the worst part of this.

My 10 year old son and 8 year old daughter were sobbing in bed last night, that sucked. But consoling them took less energy and fortitude than calmly explaining to people 'Too soon.' A guy pushed me for more this morning and I said "Well, short answer I think they got away from doing what made them successful this year..." and he immediately started in with "well, that's not good enough blah blah blah"
I just patted him on the arm, said I had to get to class, and walked away. He's lucky I didn't stab him.

The absolute fucking worst.

Commiserating online with people has made this a lot easier to take. Would love any outcome that does not involve the Leafs winning. Even the thought of the Panthers winning wouldn't bother me as much as I thought it would last night.

It was same for me in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2019. And now this. It's ridiculous - fandom. I'm 56 and I didn't sleep last night! I kept replaying the series and missed opportunities. After tough, inexplicable gut wrenching losses this place is always here. This place always understands. I'll watch some but my heart won't be in it. But surely enough, my heart WILL be in it come October. I don't post much but I am a faithful and dedicated lurker and wanna say thanks for making the ride this season so memorable.

To me, this is worse: I didn't have the justifiable expectations of a Cup the way I did this year. Just...fucking hell.

I honestly don't know how they'll get fans to get into paying attention to the regular season next year. The answer to that forever will be "regular season clearly doesn't matter."

Attendence numbers will bear close watching. I suspect they'll go down. It's a fucking terrible shame.

2019 was brutal because it happened about a month after my mother passed away and I couldn't even watch game 7... because I was driving to Maine with my dad so we could bury my grandfather. But I was numb already, and the loss couldn't penetrate that shield.

Last year was enraging because of the blindingly obvious coaching and goalie mistakes, but the fact is the Islanders were very evenly matched to the Bruins.

This year was 100% inexcusable. This is 2003 or 2010 level choking, but worse because the talent difference was far greater than those losses. I know I'm being reactionary but I don't care. Blow it up. Fire everyone into the sun.

Still really stunned today. Fans will come back but this left a big scar. Guard is up until proven otherwise in the playoffs.

I've been trying to process- is it easier to get over a round one loss or a Stanley Cup loss? I think the road to fan recovery for a round one loss is easier, even though it's somehow more embarrassing for the franchise overall.

Honestly, will they? Best regular season in history disappears like a fart in the wind. No one is gonna get overly excited for a long time going forward.

Serious question: why? If the regular season doesn't matter, are fans gonna get excited again about regular season games even if they dominate?

Logically I would expect to see a dropoff in interest and attendance.

Because people like to go to hockey games? I mean, they missed the playoffs 2 years in a row and still sold out the barn.

Interest and attendance are two different things. There definitely may be a drop off in interest but I doubt they'll see a drop off in volume of ticket sales. The prices will probably drop on the secondary market from their obscene peaks from this year.

I dunno. It stinks and it sucks but this shit happens more ofthen than not. There's a reason the Presidents Trophy winner rarely wins the Cup.

Did fans stop showing up in Foxboro after 18-1?

Last night was the worst night of sleep I've had since my Dad died.

Which really makes me question why the fuck I get so invested in sports.

But then I remember that it was my Dad who instilled his love of hockey in me, he LOVED the Bruins. His cousin was the head of security at the old Garden, so he and I saw a shit ton of Bruins games in the 1970's and 1980's, both regular season and playoffs.

As bad as losing at home in game 6 in 2013 was or worse yet, game 7 in 2019, the pain from this one is never going away, this is Patriots in the Scottish game level bad.

I cannot fathom how this team was not ready for playoff hockey considering the leadership they have in that locker room, they blitzkrieged their way through the regular season, not so much as a minor speed bump along the way, goaltending and defense were both stellar, both shit the bed in this series to a team that barely got in and finished what, 42 points behind the Bruins?

Their passing and puck clearing were both horrendous in this series, the defensemen had a collective case of the yips, would love to see a final tally as to how many Florida goals were scored as a result of a turnover.

And despite all of that, they were less than a minute away from pulling this off, but once again, they could not clear the puck and a shot went in off of a Bruins stick in front of the net.

And the Tkachuk thing annoys the fuck out of me to no end; he ran the goalie at the end of game 4, but instead of taking his head off in game 5, no one laid a finger on him the rest of the series, he camped out at the top of the crease and did whatever the fuck he wanted, I cannot fathom how that happened.

Then to add insult to injury, the two teams I was most worried about, Tampa and Colorado, got bounced.

I'm glad my Dad was not alive to see this; it would have killed him.

I need a check up from the neck up; to be this upset over a sporting event is not a good thing.

And it's not me that has to live with this, I'm just a fan, it's the players and coaches who do, as the saying goes, they'll carry this loss to their fucking graves.

The part that pissed me off the most is playoff hockey is one of my great sporting joys, I love it.

Now I am 100% out, I have zero fucks to give as to who wins, whoever does, it was gifted to them by the Bruins.

Absolutely infuriating.

8 home games a year is a lot different than 41, and the NFL is vastly more popular than the NHL.

You're probably right but I suspect we'll see a lot of people who aren't diehards stop watching.

I got the other side of this--a facebook message 5 minutes after the game ended "Let's go Panthers!"

I said that's kinda rude and he said "I've been a Panther fan since day 1" and I said "First off, being a fan doesn't make it less rude, secondly your profile pic is you in a Red Wings jersey next to the Cup, and finally, you said that since Detroit wasn't in the playoffs this year you'd be pulling for Boston."

The part that is really bothersome is that they blew three separate 1-goal leads in the third periods of the last two games. Like, they sucked for large portions of those games, but still did the work needed to be in a position to close things out. And each one of those three times, they gave up the tying goal. This isn’t even a “good teams” thing. NHL teams don’t give up third period leads. When you have one, you usually win close to 90% of the time. They only needed one of those to hold up. I know it’s not a random walk statistically, but it’s like a 0.1% chance of happening in that environment and it happened. It would be one thing if they sucked and got their doors blown off in games 6 and 7. But they sucked and still were in a position to win both of those games. Also, who had them being winless once Bergeron came back? Fuck.

Still just stunned. After the goal my 8yo just got up from the couch and walked him self to bed. My 13yo just curled up into a ball in the chair. I went and tucked in the 8yo, who I think is still a little young to care the same way my 13yo does. Came back down and he was a mess, just crying in a ball. I stopped shedding tears for sports team losses a while back. But, this one hurt more, and in a different way, because I know that feeling, and I hate it for him. We've watched so much hockey together, more this year than ever. A signature high-five after every goal, even retracting the ones (many) that were called back. Too many games together at TD to count. Just enjoying the ride with him all year long and it ended way too soon. Sounds dramatic and totally a FWP kind of thing, but I really wasn't ready for this to end, and the way it did. 60 fucking seconds, come on. Interested to see how he held up today at school, should be home any minute and I feel like I need to have a talk about the journey not the finish yada fucking yada.

Nothing in sports is more crushing than losing game 7 in OT. Living with the last minute goal, Pasternak’s nearly finishing it make it more crushing than if they’d lost 4-1.

I STILL shudder when I think of Al Sims hitting the post in game 2 of ‘74, O’Reilly almost winning in OT in ‘79…Glen Wesley.

This one stings-for all of the reasons detailed by others. I wanted to hibernate and avoid, but it’s frankly therapeutic to read through this thread and be in it together.

I love hockey and specifically Bruins hockey, so I will pay attention. But yeah, one of my first thoughts was that I sure as hell invested a lot of myself in every aspect of that regular season, the wins record, the points record and how they finished up...for fucking nothing.

I feel this pain. My 10yo wasn’t quite in tears this morning, but I could tell how broken up he was. He was ALL IN on this team from day 1. I remember him saying something silly after their first game / win of the year - “they’re on a roll” - I was like, bud, it’s been one game. Turns out and they were on a roll for 82. I hope he is able to regain the passion in the fall. Kids are resilient. It wasn’t the same when the ‘95 Sox lost for me because I didn’t have quite the same expectations. But I’ve tried to tell him that the pain is worth the ultimate payoff. Just hope he gets to see that sooner than later in life.

Sports has to be (more) about the journey than the destination. It just fucking has to be or we'd all go insane. And even if you could somehow quantify how much negative there was in this season's destination compared with the positive from the journey, and determine the negative outweighed the positive...there was a whole shitload of positive throughout the journey. So it can't be for nothing.

edit: quick add - I realize as soon as I hit post that may read as me telling you how you should feel. That's not what I was trying to do...more just trying to convince myself of how I should feel!

I really appreciate that we can all be miserable and upset about this epic choke job together as well, it does help. BUT fuck man, I still can't believe that happened. I still the next day want Monty canned, I know that's dumb and reactionary (still) BUT i'm still irritated at his ineptitude and post game pressers. The amount of shit that went wrong in that series is staggering to me. Like others this is worse to me than 19' and 13' Bergy didn't deserve to go out like that. Just a complete collapse top to bottom starting with terrible coaching. I invested so much emotion into this team this year just to watch them fucking implode and slowly crash into nothingness.

To me it’s all about expectations, and also about how you connect with the team as a fan. I have been way more into the Bs the last couple years due to my son. So this one hit harder than 2019 and 2013. If this team had even gone out say 4-2 to Toronto it wouldn’t have been all that tough to swallow. They’re a great team. To blow a 3-1 lead with home ice, losing twice in OT, and having 3 separate one goal leads in the 3rd period… it’s just devastating because as @IdiotKicker said they did the work to put themselves in position to end the series.
