That’s not realistic if you’re trying to deal position players for SPs. Other teams aren’t going to assume Mayer is a can’t miss prospect right now. The other two maybe but I hope they don’t move either of them. Anyway Cease is only available because his clock is winding down. A year ago he wasn’t available at all.
What's not realistic, that a deal can't be made for a pitcher with at least 3 years of control?

Anything is possible, but how many good SP with that much control are available, for what the Sox have to offer? Most of the really bad teams don’t have pitching. Which is why they are bad.

I'm pretty sure that you're aware of the few teams with young, controllable, pitching talent that have been indentified in these threads. Do you not think that the Sox have much to offer?

I have heard people mention guys like Gilbert, Castillo, and Kirby- but have yet to see any actual evidence that they are available. Cease is on the market; the ChiSox wanted Bello+ a year ago, right? Not sure who else is out there.

Those teams will want pitching back, I’m pretty sure. That’s the problem. For Mayer you could get a controllable pitcher from a lower tier, not an emerging ace. That wouldn’t be worth it for the Sox.

I don't think there is a chance and it would be foolish to move on from him without reestablishing whatever value a not cheap DH would have as it's basically JDM-lite. Breslow certainly wouldn't care about moving on from Bloom guys.
I also think he'll bounce back a bit. His plate discipline was something else in the first half. You've gotta think a lot of it was pressing as you don't suddenly lose your batting eye at age 29.
And, until it happened, we didn't think there was a chance of moving Sale. If CB has shown us anything with that, it's the he is not afraid to be bold.

However, I think it's far more likely he moves Kenley and/or Martin to free up payroll before signing any of Hernandez/Snell/Montgomery.

That seems to be his M.O. clear salary and replace that salary with a player. Team is improved, payroll stays the same.

After reading a lot of these posts I’ve realized how much instant gratification this fan base needs to be satisfied. A bit concerning considering the massive success of this franchise the past 20 years. Perhaps we should wait things out on guys like Yoshida before we are calling them failed contracts after a single year, and his first year in a new foreign country, of play.

Could we potentially move the Yoshida talk to its own post or an already existing thread? And move this back to rumors?
Not rumors, per se, but Cotillo continues his swing-and-miss offseason with a list of 24 "predictions" for this season
https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2024/01/24-red-sox-predictions-from-2024-including-alex-cora-leaving-after-season.html

If you're wondering whether it's worth your time, here's a sample:

1. Kenley Jansen will be traded to a team looking for a closer.

As opposed, of course, to teams looking for Jansen to be a starter

Fits into Breslow's MO. Power arm that pounds the strike zone. Never really got his secondary pitches to get swings and misses. Gets hit hard early in the count.

Edit - Actually nice change up below average fastball and slider.

Max Castillo brings the beef: he's listed at 6'2", 280 pounds.
For comparison, El Guapo was listed at 6'0", 250 pounds.

Per MLBTR, he's got an option remaining. So if he makes it to April, you'd guess it'd be in Worcester.

Looks like that puts the roster at 40, before Lucas Giolito comes on board. Someone will have to go.
Was just wondering about this. Castillo is optionable, which is great. But barring a trade I’d guess the most likely DFA is either Mata or Llovera, the only guys in our bullpen without options.

Mata seems a lot more interesting on paper but only they know the kind of condition he’s in.

Zack Weiss seems pretty darn fungible.
I was going to mention him. He was the last acquisition for the 40-man made by Bloom, so I have to imagine Breslow has no real attachment to him (or Llovera or Mata as were also mentioned). Any of them could go to make room, or it could be someone we don't expect. It's almost certainly going to be a pitcher though, since they've got a significant imbalance of pitchers to position players on the 40-man at the moment (24-16).

I’d say so too, but he’s optionable. One of those good stuff, so-so command guys.

Llovera’s stuff and command are better on paper than what he showed last year, but it feels truly far-fetched that both he and Mata open the year on the roster when we also have to keep Slaten up.

True, but I’d imagine Weiss, Llovera, and at least one other (Mata, Kelly, etc) will be off the 40-man before long, as well as a trade of an established big leaguer (Pivetta, Jansen, etc). Just can’t keep all these guys and will have to make some difficult decisions. It’s why all the panic about losing Drohan was probably overthinking it- the guys they “chose” over him were temporary placeholders always destined to get pushed out.

Not sure this has been posted anywhere but Seattle might be the front runners for Paxton. Makes a lot of sense given their history and his ties to the Pacific Northwest. I guess this would knock Bryan Woo from their rotation.

Heh, or it's a two hour drive and he has nothing better to do (which, as a Canadian, starts with watching hockey). But maybe.

How would a free agent pitcher from Canada taking in a hockey game get us one of Seattle's pitchers?
I mean, the logic is obvious but I don't really think they would view Paxton as a guy who takes one of your rotation spots completely off the table. I'm with Scottieo2, it allows them to send Woo to AAA and slow the rush to the bigs, at least until they need another guy up.

I don't think it's obvious at all. Taking a flier on Paxton wouldn't compel them to trade anyone off their current staff.

Yeah certainly not obvious they would move one of their young pitchers and rely on Paxton to make 30ish starts. On the other hand, they legitimately might have the worst 6-9 hitters in the league in Marlowe, Canzone, Urias, and Rojas.

Well, if he's in the Mariner's owner's suite they're talking. If he ends up there it's more likely they'd trade someone off, no?

Hm, Marlowe and Canzone had impressive years in the high minors, but I don't think either of them was ranked very high as prospects. They're both 26. Guess the Ms might decide to see what they have and hope at least one of them pops?

Not sure where to put this but I’ve always been fascinated by the suggested searches on Fangraphs. Right now here are my suggestions:

Vaughn Grissom
Chris Sale
Shohei Ohtani
Masataka Yoshida (I assume this is SOSH trying to find his home/road defensive splits)
Max Castillo
Frankie Montas
Lucas Giolito
Juan Soto
Jordan Walker
Nolan Arenado

I have no idea if these suggestions are universal or if these are tailored to me but if they are universal it’s kinda amazing how Red Sox dominate this list - even ones not in rumors (Yoshida) or minor waiver moves (Castillo). (If it is tailored then I’m an idiot and carry on with your days)

Ya, this is why the move wouldn't make any sense for them, even if they just send Woo down. I would bet Woo is just as good as Paxton next year, so it only adds depth. That would mean the Mariners have traded from their already weak hitting to save money to sign Paxton as a marginal increase in depth pf an already strong rotation.

I guess that might be what they are doing, but I wouldn't get it.

Here are some actual "RUMORS" for once

The Boston Red Sox could use either left-hander after shipping Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves, though they're presently spending more time exploring the trade market and could be active. The San Diego Padres desperately need innings and have shaved their payroll enough by trading away Juan Soto. And while the Baltimore Orioles' $73 million payroll is comically low for a team coming off a 101-win season, the prospect of devoting $25 million-plus a year to one arm remains a longshot, with a trade the likelier outcome.

  • Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez: the best bat, non-Bellinger division, left on the market. The Red Sox and Dodgers continue to express interest, though the Angels could make sense. So could a return engagement in Seattle, though the Mariners' payroll constraints are choking what should've been a bountiful winter.
That's why Jesus Luzardo's name continues to percolate among teams interested in a starter. The 26-year-old left-hander posted a 3.58 ERA in 178⅔ innings and struck out 208, nearly four times as many batters as he walked. Miami, under new general manager Peter Bendix, is in listening mode on all of its players except wunderkind right-hander Eury Perez. Luzardo is almost certainly the most valuable among them, even more than NL batting champion Luis Arraez, and whether it's the Red Sox, Orioles or either of the New York teams, Luzardo would look mighty good in their rotation for the next three seasons.

Paxton said he hasn’t had any contact with the Mariners this offseason on a FA deal. But said he’d be interested in coming back.

I wonder if it's possible that we've already agreed to a deal with Paxton, either formally or via handshake, and are waiting to announce after things shake out for 40-man reasons.

wouldn't break my heart, but if there's any chance of getting 2 of Montgomery, Snell, Burnes, Luzardo, Gilbert, or Castillo I'd be even happier. I'd take Paxton and one of those, but unlike many here, I'm higher on Paxton and Sale in terms of innings. I'm convinced Sale gives ATL 160 IP this year.

Castillo’s an interesting idea. The Mariners have a decent amount of young pitching and he‘s heading into his age 31 season on an extension that’s in its second year if I’m reading right. If they’re looking to cut payroll it could be a good arm on a salary that isn‘t bad at all. I’m inclined to think they’re not super keen on moving him but DiPoto loves to deal and they‘ve made some interesting trades in the past.
