Not as good a sign for the outcome of the Logan Mankins trade.

if we are judging by results the Pats came out way ahead, and Tim Wright was the most minor component of that trade at the time, so completely disagree with this.

Yeah.  I mean, TB sucked, Mankins was bad, Wright was pretty useful, the Pats won a Super Bowl, and got a 4th round pick for their trouble.

Aside from the Mankins trade angle, the Tim Wright thing is a little curious.  For a stretch there around the middle of the season, he was a staple of the goal line offense.  Six TDs is nothing to sneeze at.  It looked like his role was going to take off and expand.  Thereafter, Amendola's role increased, and Wright's went to almost zero.

How Wright's star in NE rapidly declined last season is one of the stories I look forward to reading one day.  Not that it's high on the list of open questions.  But it's there.

With Chandler, Davis and HooMan all behind Gronk, it's not at all surprising to see Wright gone.

Reiss reminds us what they got for Mankins:

1. 2015 fourth-round draft pick (DE Trey Flowers)
2. Salary-cap relief in 2014 ($6.25 million) and beyond
3. Wright

I actually thought they'd consider moving Wright to a more split-out receiver this year. Such, apparently, was not to be

Logic suggests that Wright was unable to grow into something more than "great goal-line receiving option."

I don't think he could beat man-to-man coverage - a lot of his production was finding soft spots in zones (often rotated over to worry about more dangerous receiving weapons). He had just four games with more than one catch and just three games with more than 20 receiving yards. That's likely why he moved inside in the first place, but he can't block enough to be a real TE.

Well, there's only one ball and so many passes to go around.  As Amendola proved to be more and more productive, someone's targets were going to go down.  Sure as heck wasn't going to be Gronk or Edelman or even LaFell.

“@JasonLaCanfora: There will be ample interest in Evan Mathis. His price-point will scare some teams off if it gets to high. MIA, NE, SEA all make sense”

I don't get it. If they wanted to pay $10 MM / year to a 33-year-old guard, they could have just hung on to Mankins.

Yeah, not sure if they'd be willing to spring for an expensive older guard dude  (although one could argue Mathis offers more at this stage than Mankins).

Signing Brian Waters was an exception as he was a late cut.

Yeah, and I think he's got Denver written all over him. A team that has money, once all the fat is cut, and that has just a huge need immediately at the position. His agent must be licking his chops thinking of a meeting with Elway.

Butler apparently looked great, which is a bit comforting. Gronk also threw a TD pass to Brady, who peeled the football like a banana as celebration.

1) just FYI, the PFW guys were questioning both how good Butler looked (they said he looked fine, but not particularly special) and how media members were able to identify Butler without any jersey numbers from a few hundred yards.

2) I'm surprised the Brady thing was reported. People kept the Edelman pass play under wraps for years.

They are not actually going to run that play so they allowed the media to see it.
