Man, that doesn't bode well for a Gonzalez return this year. I would imagine JC is still owed a good amount of money this year too.

I’d rather punt the season and roll over the cap space, but I guess that’s not really in the blood of coach or ownership here.

Good news is, if he returns to form, he’s cheap. If not, can just be cut.

Fine with it. You need a plug and play starter and he is better than Wade and Bryant on the outside.

No guaranteed base salary after this year therefore assume they put some of the base money owed this year to next year.

Really need Jon Jones back though because JC has not looked the same since his injury.

Can't hurt (unless there's some bad cap hit in future seasons). Guy flourished here and clearly needs a fresh start.

No future obligatory cap hits other than not rolling over about 10 mil he’ll make this year.

I dont get this. I mean i get needing CB depth, bit with this $ attached? We aren't one player away from anything except assuring we finish 8-9.

He will cost like $7M for this year and then they can cut him with no hit.

Or, they could rework his entire deal to reduce the impact this year.

What's wrong with $7M this year?

They desperately need CB depth and he's probably the highest ceiling guy they could get. He was a disaster with the Chargers but was successful here before. If it doesn't work out they just cut him after the season.

I think the biggest quibble is if it's worth investing in this team or if they should just roll with what they've got/tank.

I can't understand being against this move. The cost is miniscule and he can be cut at the end of the year without a cap hit. Gonzalez is out for the rest of the year. Can't really roll with Myles Bryant as CB1 for the rest of the season.

Per Tom Pellisaro, Chargers paying “a majority” of Jackson’s salary
Good to hear. I think at over $9M, there's a legit question about whether that money would be better spent in the offseason. If Chargers are picking up most of the tab then it does indeed fall into the no-brainer category for me.

Isn't Jack Jones eligible to come off IR this week?
He is but I also think the initial reporting was that it was closer to a 2 month recovery. I could be wrong.

Marcus Jones and Gonzalez are done with the torn labrum's.

Jon Jones has was limited the past 2 weeks in practice so presumably he's close to returning.

Absolute no-brainer. I mean, the guy was fantastic with the patriots in his first go round. Obviously, he has not done well with the chargers, but we have seen guys come back to the patriots and be really good again. And yes they are a little bit desperate, otherwise moves like this are not necessary. But if he returns to form, having three corners like him and the Jones boys makes for actually a really good secondary. It allows them to remain highly competitive defensively, even without Gonzalez. Replacing Judon, however, is a different story.

If a player (like JC) has a $9Milion cap hit, but the LAC are paying for some portion (let's say 2/3), does the cap hit for that 2/3 remain with LAC or does it go to the Pats (who simply receive cash to offset their spending)?
The Chargers restructured this year's contract. They converted all but $1.5 million to a signing bonus and the Pats are paying the $1.5 million.

He's still recovering from a torn meniscus, but it's a $1.5 million tryout for the rest of the year.
Yes, I think people should be prepared for the very real possibility Jackson is cooked. He’s had a couple of pretty severe injuries since he left with his knee and foot.

Yeah, definitely a no brainer. Now do RT !

Seriously though they’re better able to replace Judon (even though he’s the best defender) with internal talent options than any other position on roster, though even Bills stockpile of DL is beginning to look thin.

Oh I think he's definitely cooked IMO, but a cooked Jackson is still better than Bryant, and then they just cut him at the end of the year.

I wondered to myself if they'd do this after he got the healthy scratch but then the off field stuff came up again so I assumed not.

Seems pretty low risk and likely needed with all the secondary injuries. Was he really cooked in LA or just not a fit into Staley's scheme?

FWIW, I think that JC, even if cooked, is going to provide depth in a way that they need. This is a lot of injuries. Wade and Bryant haven't been bad this year IMO, largely because they haven't been needed at full time CB1/CB2. I don't expect JC to be peak JC, but he'll help. And at this cost, it's 100% no-brainer.

Yes, this is the most likely outcome. He has been a "healthy" scratch this year already I believe, and his injuries were substantial.

While this might be true of some positions, I'm not sure I buy the idea a cornerback just "doesnt fit" with a team. If you can cover your man, you will fit. If you can't, you wont. He was injured/bad for the Chargers, nothing more to it than that.

Having said that, half the NFL could beat out Myles Bryant for playing time on 1 leg. So if that's the choice and the Chargers are paying...worth a flyer until we are in full on tank mode.
