The 49ers on Tuesday found a trade partner for one of their many tight ends, as general manager Trent Baalke struck a deal with a former colleague.

Tight end Asante Cleveland, a second-year player from Miami, was traded to the New England Patriots, a source told CSNBayArea.com. Terms of the trade were not immediately known.

Baalke was a scout with the New York Jets from 1998 to 2000, and overlapped two seasons with New England coach Bill Belichick, who was an assistant coach under Bill Parcells.

Cleveland, a native of Sacramento, spent six games on the 49ers’ 53-man roster last season and did not catch a pass. He was on the 49ers’ practice squad the remainder of his rookie season.

On Saturday night in the exhibition opener, Cleveland caught three passes for 10 yards in the 49ers’ 23-10 loss the Houston Texans. He played 11 snaps of offense in the game.

The 49ers still have a stockpile at tight end behind starter Vernon Davis with Derek Carrier, Vance McDonald, Blake Bell, Garrett Celek, Xavier Grimble and seventh-round draft pick Busta Anderson.

It’s possible the 49ers could trade another tight end before the start of the regular season. Washington is known to be looking for a tight end after Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen sustained season-ending injuries. Both players were placed on injured reserve on Monday.

Well I think this is a positive signal that they like their depth at guard this year and is an endorsement of the two rookies in there.  Consider Devey was starting for the Patriots at one point last year, this is a much better position to be in.

I still don't get why Tim Wright was let go, and then they turn around and do this kind of trade.  Devey certainly is nothing spectacular but Wright showed flashes of actual production.  Wonder if this was a roster move and they would have picked up Wright again if no one claimed him.

Roster size at this point in the offseason is 90. To cut Wright when they did is a clear sign that he wasn't in their future plans.

Tim Wright & Cleveland are completely different players. Two completely separate transactions. The player who should be worried are Bequette and Hooman, both not practicing due to injuries.

P.S. Oh and what SN said.

even so, Tim Wright would be attractive for a team thin at TE after pre-season...Pats could have received something for him, instead of no compensation

Do you think the Patriots released Wright without asking around about trading him?

I believe his point is that, had they held onto Wright, the Patriots may have been in a better position to trade him NOW, despite having failed to get anything worthwhile for him earlier in the off-season.

If 10 teams put in a waiver claim on a player -- Wright in this case -- it's a fair question why they didn't get anything for him in a trade. That's a situation that would normally lend itself to getting a little something. In the big picture, who cares?, it would have been an insignificant something...but it is puzzling since it neither makes sense that that Pats wouldn't ask around nor does it makes sense they could get nothing when, clearly, teams wanted him (in a 50th guy on the roster sort of way).

Not saying this is the case, but sometimes teams do like to treat a player with respect. Give them a chance to find a team they want to be on vs forcing them onto some team for a small prospect or pick that has a low chance of making the team.

Belichick isn't always a cold hearted businessman.

This is not applicable for Wright, though, given he was subject to waivers.

Still applicable to Wright. If only trade partner was a bottom feeder team, and Bill goes "I can trade him there or see if he gets lucky and passes through to some good team".

It's the definite "screw job (word choice for illustrative purposes only)" vs "let's see what happens".

No it isn't. Rosters in the offseason are 90 deep and multiple teams make waiver claims on just about every player who hits the wire. There should be zero doubt that a competent front office like the Patriots "shopped" Wright during the draft and got no takers.

Then it became an internal sorting process - is this UDFA (Jimmay Mundine, for example) or waiver wire guy a better fit for our system than Tim Wright? That's why he gets released in the middle of June - another player came available on the wire who offered more potential/better fit that Wright.

The love for Wright is based on touchdowns and fantasy, not on football fit. There's a ton of examples on film of him blowing a blocking assignment, a snap count or a route adjustment. He led skill position players in mental errors by large margin; when he did find playing time in the back half of the year, he was one of those guys Brady didn't have confidence in or look at very long in his progressions.

The reason to like Tim Wright is stats and selection bias; the problem with Tim Wright is all the other plays you didn't notice him because he was fucking up something or standing on the sideline because he fucked something up.
