What confuses me about this pick-up is what routes does he run?  Gronk, Edelman and Amendola all tend to operate in the same ares of the field that Wayne might want to be in.  Add in Lafell (who often runs slants as well) plus either a second TE (Chandler or Hooman) and an RB (the Vereen replacement) and I just don't know where all these bodies end up.
This just gave me an image of Belichick and McDaniels drawing up a play where every single receiver and running back ends up downfield in the exact same spot and it turns out to be a QB keeper.

I'm not trying to be snarky here, but isn't the answer that those bodies end up not all on the field at the same time?
Jscola's post about the number of targets per player is a good lenses to look a this signing through, but so is snaps per player. Wayne is likely going to be competing with Amendola for snaps.

Last year the snaps broke down:
LaFell 957
Edelman 853
Amendola 538
Tyms 134
(football outsiders has Slater at 299, but I'm guessing that includes special teams)

Considering the beating the Edelman takes, I wouldn't be shocked if they want his count a little lower.

Well, obviously not all those guys are in the field at once, but what I'm saying is that I'm just not sure what Wayne brings to the table that isn't replicated by multiple players.

Perhaps BB sees him as Lafell injury insurance (the way Amenda is insurance for Edelman). But it seems to me that you really need your 4th or 5th WR to bring something to the table that isn't already replicated elsewhere. And we know Wayne isn't going to be playing ST.

Amendola isn't just a backup for Edelman, he had almost 40% of their combined snaps. If either one of this guys goes down, the other can't just suddenly increase their snap count to compensate. Someone else has to be there to slot into place.
To the extent that he can sub in a portion of Lafell's routes (slants), possibly take 2nd TE routed if one of them goes down, or possessions that might go to the Vareen replacement, he could be considered a utility infielder.
I'm not saying he can fully replace any one of them, but he might be able to competently sub in for one or another.

For 2 of the guys you mentioned, Rice and Brown, you've got hall of fame level talent to begin with, so the drop off from there as old age creeps in would be less than some JAG who is aging.
True, but we are talking about HOF talent in Reggie Wayne though.

My favorite part of this whole thing is that Indy fans are seething and/or depressed, while Pats fans could give a shit about Wayne. He'll get a tepid greeting from indifferent Pats fans while every snap eats away at Colts fans.

It's wonderful.

isn't this whole situation basically Wade Boggs to the Yankees?

Yes, right down to us on the fun side of the equation sort of scratching our heads and saying "wait...you think we're rivals?"

Crazy as hell thought of the day.

Given what appear to be redundancies in Waynes skill set, any chance BB may try to have him serve in a dual role, a la late career troy brown? Possible this was a signing to provide depth on both sides of ball?

Prob unlikely but Bill thinks outside the box.

Brown made sense because of a unique skillset and experience in the slot, plus his mentality.  No reason to think Wayne has any of those things for the role Brown played (Wayne was a very different receiver).

I think the chances of that border on zero
