Didn't see a thread for this, especially in light of the roster changes and speculation today.

Last night he stepped on first base awkwardly with his right leg while rounding it for his single, limping out of the game to the clubhouse.  Initial reports were that he was experiencing 'hamstring tightness,' which seems like an understatement.

He previously had been nursing a left knee injury.

Apparently not listed as available for today's game.

“@RyanHannable: Dustin Pedroia to DL with a strain to right hamstring. No timetable on his return or degree to the strain.”

well, that has to be better news than if it was the knee.  hope he gets better soon.

The fact that he limped out of the game (especially considering this is Pedroia) and that they've immediately put him on the DL rather than rest it a few days suggests this isn't your run-of-the-mill hammy pull.

Hope he really lets it rest. Seems like the kind of thing that could linger the rest of the year.

My son is going to be so pissed.  Going to see his first ever Sox game in Fenway and his fave player won't be playing.  Not looking forward to breaking this news to him.

15 days takes us to July 10. I would think they would not play him that weekend, and then it is the all star break, and they don't play again until the 17th. So he should get 3 weeks off at a minimum.

Maybe not.  Hamstring pulls are really easy to aggravate and Pedey is really hard to keep out of the lineup.  Putting him on the DL and forcing him to let it heal is a very smart move.  Come back after the All Star Break.

If you watch the replay, Pedey pulled himself out of the game pretty much instantly...it's not like there was any lobbying by the trainer or Farrell, or test jogs, etc.  I don't think it's a good sign.

Looked like a distal injury, closer to where the muscle becomes tendon as opposed to the "typical", mid-substance muscle injury.  These can be a little slow to respond to treatment, I'm not surprised they DL'ed him quickly.

That, and the overall meaningless nature of the rest of the season.  *sigh*

I don't have $10 handy; do you take EBT?   :)

Offhand, in 9 seasons, Pedroia's only had 2 injury free (2008-2009)?

He played more games in both 2011 and 2013 than he did in either of those earlier seasons. In fact, only three guys have more starts at second base than Pedroia over the past six years.

For a small fee, I'll tell you the name of the double-secret website where I found this information.

My point was about injuries, not games played.  His injuries have impacted his performance.

2007:  Broken hamate (surgery after season)
2008:  No surgery or DL
2009:  No surgery or DL
2010:  Broken bone in foot (surgery during season); DL
2011:  Foot continued (surgery at end of season)
2012:  Broken finger (surgery after season); DL
2013:  Torn UCL (surgery after season)
2014:  Hand/wrist (surgery after season)
2015:  Knee/hamstring; DL

*bump*

How's he looking on the field right now (haven't seen any games)?

He was red hot at the plate in June, but he's 0 for 18 since returning.

I haven't watched any of the games since the break, but there was an article on NESN (I think) that said he just missed a home run foul in one of the games against the Angels and that he was squaring up on the ball and hitting it solidly, but right at opposing players. I guess it's a matter of him getting enough at bats.

Frankly if he didn't play again til March it'd be ok by me. Hamstrings take forever - no point in pushing anything this season.
I agree and they can take the same approach with Buchholz.

While the contract they signed him for was well under market, the guy just can't stay healthy. Will he ever play 145+ games again?

And people talk about Shane being fragile....same type of player though; all out on every play.  It sucks though.

Seems like Pedey has, at times, come back too soon, this just being the latest example. Love that he wants to play, but as he ages, they need to manage him carefully.

Edit: spelling

Definitely agree with this--perhaps the team and Pedey rushed back in hopes of recovering ground in the Angels & Astros series? Hopefully he'll be back in early August and rake for the last part of the season, helping the Sox avoid the AL East basement.

To this point he has had a lot of injuries (see list above) but managed to play through most of them at a pretty high level, especially defensively. Hamstrings are tough, so hard to say if this means he's more likely to NOT be able to play through things going forward.

I suspect part of the decision may be due to the season looking like a lost cause; it looked like they could be turning things around when he hustled to get back.

According to an article on redsox.com yesterday, Pedroia took batting practice recently, but isn't likely to be back until mid-September.
