Correct me if I'm wrong but 'past the plate' and 'breaking the wrist' aren't part of the rule even though it gets repeated like that. It's whether or not your control the head of the bad. To me he clearly controls the head of the bat.
You are not wrong. He didn't look like he "committed to the swing" to me, he was trying to get out of the way of the pitch,
If that ump made that call against the Phillies he would need the National Guard to get him back to the hotel.
The rule asks only whether the pitch was "struck at by the batter". It isn't any more rigorously defined than that.
The goal now should be for the Padres to harness this anger into revenge, crush the Phillies in the remaining games and move on to the WS. At this point, I think I prefer them as WS Champs to the other 3.

The loathesome Manny Machado just hit a homer, top of the first. This Phillies pitcher, Falter, just gave up a single to Josh Bell. Walked Cronenworth. Drury hits it to the warning track fast, Castellanos can't get it, and the Padres go up 3-0 in the first, and they take Falter out. Poor kid.

Bailey Falter was a surprisingly effective fifth starter for the Phillies in September down the stretch (had him on my NL only rotisserie team, yes I know no one cares), but I was very surprised to see him handed the start in an NLCS game. Not too surprised by the results.

Manaea was really bad this season, wouldn’t feel comfortable with him out there if I were a Padres fan.

Manaea is another "get the big name" trade from Preller that ultimately hurt the team. The Padres could have really used a Quantrill (Clevinger trade) and Andres Munoz (Austin Nola trade) tonight.
Melvin gets a small pass. Manea had been good in these playoffs without giving up a run in six innings. And the rest of the pen is why they are here.
