This is pretty damn cool.

It has been quite a week for GoPro so far. First, they announce a handful of new cameras that look extremely promising. Now, they have signed a deal with the NHL to equip hocket players with their cameras for awesome POV footage.
It's not exactly clear how the camera program will be implemented, but the idea is to give fans a unique view of the game, which this certainly has the potential to do.
The players will reportedly have options for cameras that go on their helmets, masks, or jerseys.

Between here and everywhere.
That's going to be awesome.

I still watch the GoPro footage from the Fenway game a lot of SoSHers took part in, and even the the quality of hockey was...lacking. Watching it from that perspective makes it that much better. Seeing it on the Pros is going to be incredible.

Wasn't that what everyone thought with Helmet Cam in the NFL? A swirl of player movement , a shock of a hit and a face full of mud?

Hockey isn't exactly comparable to football in that way. Most football plays are over in a matter of seconds. Hockey can play on continuously for minutes without any break, and while guys fighting for the puck in the corner might not be the greatest footage, watching some back and forth breaks...that could be incredible.

I've always wanted to do this as a goalie. I play against some exD1ers, but I can only imagine how fast it would seem for a pro goalie. All you forwards and D need to see what we see... Especially when you screen the shit out of us

This sounds awesome.  I wonder if there is going to be a way to see unedited footage, and how much they will release.

If they added that to GameCenter it would likely convince me to make the switch from Center Ice.

Hey, fucko, there's a difference between a dive and a flop.

He does both.

I am loving NHL Gamecenter because of the option to watch "exclusive" cams that must be the Go Pro camera on players or officials. It gives a different perspective on the game from ice level. You also have the option of a goalie cam, which is the overhead view of the goal crease area. Checking out the different views during the Habs/Leafs game tonight.

Do we know what teams will be doing this? I also saw that the Refs are wearing a cam?

Actually this says this wont be used during live games...

GoPro's tiny cameras are about to make watching hockey a bit more interesting: this coming season, NHL games on NBC and Rogers will start cutting to point-of-view footage that's been captured by GoPro cameras, according to Adweek. Unfortunately, the footage won't actually be live and from the game — instead, it'll be prerecorded footage of select players demonstrating what it's like to be in specific situations. Adweek suggests that you might see New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist blocking a shot, for instance. For any player that GoPro has footage for (and it's not stated how many that is), the networks will be able to cut to their point-of-view demonstration whenever it wants to in order to better illustrate what's happening in the game.
You'll start to see the footage outside of broadcasts too. The NHL will also be using it in promo campaigns and on its own television network, and the footage will also turn up online on GoPro's YouTube channel and the league's website. There's no denying that this will be far more interesting if GoPro and the league can manage to start doing this with live footage — a far more significant technical feat — but even this basic partnership still begins to illustrate what the future of sports coverage might look like.
