SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners and Tampa Bay Rays didn't wait long to pull off the first significant trade of the offseason.

Four days after the World Series ended, the teams completed a six-player swap Thursday night. Seattle sent infielder-outfielder Brad Miller, first baseman Logan Morrison and pitcher Danny Farquhar to Tampa Bay for pitchers Nathan Karns and C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league outfielder Boog Powell.

So maybe don't post then? Someone else would have posted about the trade eventually. You don't get internet cool points for being the first one to post about something here.

I never thought that baseball would have two unrelated Boog Powells.
I was curious on this myself. Maybe his dad was an Orioles fan or his grandfather was the original. Interesting.

Karns is the best player in the deal though. He had some solid stretches last year.

I am curious to see how Karns develops.  The Rays micro managed his starts last year and removed him from games really early.  He only went more than 6 innings 3 times in 26 starts.  I guess he could be a 5th starter with those numbers but he is going to kill your bullpen.

I think Miller could turn out to be the best player in the deal.  I wonder if the Rays will stick him at short or if he becomes a Zobrist type that plays all over the field.

Slightly off topic, but what do people think of Miller?  Is he more valuable than Brock Holt?  They seem comparable to me.  I ask because we've discussed Holt's trade value in other threads, and if Miller can be the main piece to bring back Karns, and Holt has comparable value, then it's likely that Holt could fetch a good reliever or be a legit piece of a larger deal for a top SP.

It's an easy deal to see from the Seattle perspective.  They improve their OF defense by trading Morrison, so they can move Trumbo out of LF to 1B.  Nelson Cruz goes to DH.  And they have a kid named Ketel Marte to replace Miller at SS, and he could very well be an improvement right away as his numbers in Seattle last year show (.283/.351/.402 in 247 PAs).  To get a potentially solid starter for some spare parts is a pretty good deal for them.

This is a really good point. Miller is probably (reputation, near meaningless small sample numbers) a better shortstop than Holt, although Holt is better in the outfield where Miller is all but unplayable per small-sample UZR. They are very similar hitters: Miller's career wRC+ is 99 to Holt's 94.

Both are pre-arb. The biggest difference in value is that Holt is a year older, although Miller has about forty games' more service time.

Edited to add: It sounds, though, like the big deal with Miller is that TB likes him as a SS. If they're right that he can be above average there, he's a great player. I'm not sure anyone buys Holt fulltime at any infield position beyond 2B. Granted, there are teams who need a 2B.

I think there is a good chance that Miller has significantly higher trade value than Holt. Miller is a former top prospect, and the main question mark had always been his defense. He's made strides defensively and he now looks like a legitimate option at SS with a bat that is already good for the position but projects to be even better than it's been. Really, Miller has star upside at the most important defensive position on the field. I just don't think Holt can compare..
