It seemed to me that the Red Sox have recently had a lot of problems in day games, so I thought I'd arbitrarily look at the last 11 (since 1 August)

They lost 8 of those
2-3
1-2
0-1

8-6
1-2
5-10
3-4

3-2
16-2
5-8
0-3

Season-long stats show they don't hit quite as well during the day, albeit I don't know if the differences mean that much:

(not including today)
Win%: 53% Day / 58% Night
R/G: 5.3 Day / 5.7 Night
Hits/G: 10.0 Day / 10.1 Night (!)
HR/G: 1.2 Day / 1.3 Night
BA: .285 Day / .288 Night
OBP: .349 Day / .353 Night
OPS: .807 Day / .826 Night (!)

OK, first of all, these stats are remarkable, day & night. It's like the difference between unbelievably good and extraordinarily good.

But it's been a bad stretch run with day games. Maybe they're just tired in the dog days. Maybe the long road trip has something to do with it, but it's becoming a little odd that they averaged only 1.67 runs in 6 of those 8 losses and 2.13 overall (not including 9 runs/game in their 3 wins).

Maybe they need new sunglasses.

Real or imagined?

I don't know. The offensive numbers seem pretty close to me. So close that the differences seem almost meaningless.

and even in the 11 games you picked they still outscored the opposition 44-43... (of course that magical 16-2 destruction of Greinke and the Dbacks may have had something to do with that...)

Yeah, that's kind of the downside with Pythag approaches -- I don't think scoring 10 runs against the back-end of a bullpen, particularly one of the worst bullpens in the majors, is particularly relevant or predictive.

Pythag becomes much less predictable in shorter stretches. Shouldn't be even talking about it in a 11 game sample.
