BC: "Pablo comes from a place with a lot of similarities to Boston."

Really?
BC is talking about the SF org and how they do things the right way.  The way the org runs and how they treat their players.  Most of the SF core guys have stayed and are very happy there.  BC is saying that Boston is similar in these regards.

I like that he is talking about sitting with the video guy.  He might not take pitches, but at least he wants to be informed about which ones he will see.

Reporters really getting on the weight thing.
He handled it well - looks like they prepped him on how to address it.

That said, it will get tiresome if he keeps getting asked about it.

So, value against the luxury tax threshold each year:

2015: 17.6m
2016: 17.6m
2017: 17.6m
2018: 18.6m
2019: 18.6m
2020: 5/17 club

Is that how it works?
No it's AAV. Can't remember if club options are guaranteed but I don't think so, think it's only player options. it's at least 5/95, so 19mm AAV.

In terms of the luxury tax, the only thing that matters is the guaranteed cash divided by the years.  95/5 = $19M per year.  You can pay him 10M one year and 20M the next -- knock yourself out.  But it does not matter for the purposes of payroll.

BC said something interesting about having different types of hitters in the lineup.  Fangraphs had a big article on that recently and many here thought that BC may have the same philosophy, which he just verified that he does.  Great press conference.

I like that both of these contracts (Pablo/Hanley) have an extra year that isn't guaranteed.  Pablo at 5/95 isn't bad, if a slight overpay, and I am surprised that the Sox didn't have to add the extra year to pry him loose.  He really must have wanted to come here.

If the club option doesn't count, then it's only 5/90, so $18m AAV, though, right?  And then it will either be $5m or $17m in 2020.

Isn't this just a 5/90 contract with an option/buy out?

$3 million bonus
$17x3=$51
$18x2=36
Total: $90

Pablo talks about the Red Sox hitters but says nothing about Cespedes. Nah, maybe reading too much into it.
Neither did Cherington when he talked about recent acquisitions.

Reporters applauding at the end of the conference ... is that unusual?

Those were the pandas the Dentist had flown in from DC.

Edit: Most likely it was the team owners, the Dentist, and Pablo's reps that were clapping.

No.  It is the guaranteed total of the deal.  What is the minimum amount of money the Red Sox will have to pay?  $95M.  What is the minimum number of years?  5.  The end.,

The buyout would be considered guaranteed I believe

But it's not a 5/95 contract according to Speir.  It's a 5/90, and a sixth year club option with a $5 million buy out.

The $5M buyout counts as guaranteed money, so it's 5x19 for tax purposes.

So, then in year 6 if they pick up the option it's $12m for 2020?

No, in Year 6, they either pay him $5M to leave or $17M to stay.

Ann Killion, who is nominated for the California Sportswriter of the Year award this year, is usually pretty good.  But she is really taking the Panda departure personally.  That said, I have the same worry as her about Pablo's sensitivity.  A few tweets:

Pablo doesn't do well with exterior pressure: like early this season w/contract issues. He'll feel ton of pressure in Boston to prove worth

Referencing the ongoing weight problems of a professional athlete is "fat shaming"?

If Panda's attraction to Boston is really to future DH, that's a problem. Sounds like he's already planning to eat.

Predictions: Pablo next August: "Good times never seemed so good" as when he was in San Francisco.

I agree. RT @JFloe408: @annkillion Ramirez is an ass. I have a feeling if Pablo goes, he'll regret it half way through the season.

If Sandoval is gone, good luck with Hanley Ramirez. Not exactly Hunter Pence or Gregor Blanco.

And while I'm at it, here's a completely ridiculous (IMO) tweet:
If Pablo is gone, I do think Cespedes will end up in LF for the Giants.

Ridiculous because I'm hard-pressed to understand what the Giants could offer the Sox that would land Cespedes.

Pablo didn't mention the tax rates in CA and MA, but he did cite EST as an attractive feature in Boston.

"Not exactly Hunter Pence or Gregor Blanco". Ugh, that's some Cardinals fanboy type shit. Yeah, only the Giants have nice, upstanding guys on the team, he'll be joining a bunch of thugs here in Boston, right? Dude is gone, get over it lady.

Pablo called Hanley "a great, funny guy who loves his teammates."  Said he makes him laugh a lot.  Does Ann Killion speak Spanish?  She sounds pissed Panda left and after watching the press conference I can understand why - the guy is gregarious, lovable, loves to play baseball and enthusiastic.  He is going to be well-loved here.  He's like a young Papi with the excitement and the way he carries himself.

Outstanding.

She used to be pretty good when she wrote for the San Jose Mercury News; stood out mostly on 49er reporting, as I recall. Nowadays though, Andrew Baggarly is by far the best reporter about the Giants. How many people still buy newspapers? Pablo may have gotten off to that bad start this year partially due to contract year nerves, like she says, but how about his goddam stellar post season hitting in 12 and 14. No pressure there? Ann, your grapes are sour.
