I guess it’s fine if he’s the 13th pitcher. But it seems like the staff has a lot of guys who could be the 13th pitcher. Then again, good bullpens often seemingly come out of nowhere.

I know people seem to be in to Fangraphs projections; right now we’ve got the following (with projected FIP)

Slaten 4.66
Campbell 4.30
Weissert 4.46
Anderson 5.06
Bernardino 4.27
Winckowski 4.16
Martin 3.72
Jansen 4.14

Criswell 4.68
Jacques 4.79
Kelly 4.86

I think folks here didn't want to freak you out or anything, but I think I should come clean and let you know how it is with the numbers. Anderson is actually the official eleventh man. The thirteenth man is Whitlock, and the twelfth man is Bello. I'm afraid they're both going to be canned before Anderson will. It's the power of naming and numbers.

With the starters in the rotation who have not proven that they can go deep into games, Cora is going to need a number of arms that can go multiple innings and not all of them will be high leverage. I have no problem with signing an experienced veteran who will understand his role which will occasionally involve saving the rest of the bullpen by taking a beating for a ML paycheck.

Not sure how this can be exciting or positive but he’s alive, can throw a ball and is cheap. So he can eat innings I guess

Over the past four years his tendency has been to cough up approx. 2 runs for every 3 innings eaten. I think our opponents may be excited to see their innings on his plate.

I think Breslow is also thinking of building numbers ahead of the possibilities of other pitchers going on the IL this year. He might be in a state of shock at how many have gone down already, Mata, Giolito, Kelly, Murphy. And last year with Sale, Houck and Whitlock.

Depth is definitely a goal here. I don't think he's shocked, pitchers are dropping like flies all over the league, and dealing with it has become part of the landscape. And based on how quickly he snagged Anderson, I think they actually like him a little.

Here is an article that looks at Anderson's recent performance, I found some of it very interesting, and it certainly seems he hasn't simply sucked for four years.

https://www.mlb.com/press-release/press-release-red-sox-agree-to-one-year-contract-with-right-handed-pitcher-chase-anderson#:~:text=BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red,the 60-Day Injured List

In 2023, Anderson recorded a 5.42 ERA (52 ER/86.1 IP) in 19 games (17 starts) with the Rays and Rockies. He allowed 22 earned runs in 9.1 innings (21.21 ERA) over a three-start span from June 18-29, but in his other 16 outings he posted a 3.51 ERA (30 ER/77.0 IP). In his final three starts of the 2023 season, Anderson recorded a 1.47 ERA (3 ER/18.1 IP) and held opponents to a .183 slugging percentage, surrendering only one extra-base hit. On September 15 against the San Francisco Giants, he threw 7.0 hitless innings but was removed from the game after throwing 101 pitches and issuing five walks. Anderson made 10 starts last season in which he threw at least 5.0 innings and allowed three runs or fewer, including three scoreless outings.
Anyway, that stretch in June was abysmal, but it looks like he was able to come back from it pretty well and ended last year fairly strong. Again, for the last arm in the pen, they could do much worse.

While this weekend was rightfully mostly focused on Booser, it had to feel pretty damn good for my man Chase.

In 13 innings this season, he's allowed 4 runs and is sporting a 2.77 ERA, brought down from 4.0 with two 2 scoreless inning performances against the team that couldn't find a place for him this spring. Booyah!

Cora has used him virtually perfectly, and it's been and will probably continue to be a very important role for this team. His stuff has looked better than I expected, too, and I thought he'd be decent....

On the other: they got him within hours of his release, kinda like Slaten? It seems pretty intentional at least.
(This post is a cut and paste from yesterday's game thread, came back here and saw it was simplicio.)

I love that B&B always have their eyes open for guys they think will fit with their program. I think someone mentioned in the Anderson thread that it was similar to when Slaten became available. they didn't wait, they just went and got the player. And for the record, I'm not comparing the talent levels of the two players, just acknowledging that there is value in both, and B&B identified it, and brought them in to fill their respective roles.

Tough to pin today ENTIRELY on Anderson. Sure, he walked three, but more shitty defense hurt him. If McGuire handles that strike three, he's out of the inning and it's a completely different game.

Yeah I was listening on the radio but I don't blame Anderson at all. Craptastic defense did us in yet again, and it really wasn't entirely on McGuire either. That sixth inning was ugly.
