Thought this was worth its own thread

One industry source says he "knew" the Athletics would trade Josh Donaldson this winter, no matter how little baseball sense it made, because the All-Star and Beane were "at war" by season's end.

Multiple sources cite a verbal altercation between the two after Donaldson told manager Bob Melvin he needed a couple of days off after Oakland had played several days in a row. The story goes, Beane told Donaldson if he needed a couple of days off, the club should put him on the disabled list, and that made Donaldson unhappy. ...
"Donaldson told the manager he needed a blow, and [Bob] Melvin said, 'You got it,' " the source said. "Then that night's lineup came out and Billy asked, 'Where's Donaldson? "

When told what happened, the source says, an angry Beane demanded that Melvin put Donaldson back into the lineup.
"They got into it in the coach's office," the source says, describing a scene in which Beane lit into Donaldson, with the third baseman reiterating his need for a day off and petulantly calling Beane "Billy Boy.

"Nobody talks to Billy that way," the source said. "It did not surprise me in the least that he got rid of Donaldson.

Seems kind of stupid for Beane to trade his all-star 3B because they got into an argument (if this is true)

Is it when they were playing absolutely terribly in the back half of the season? Cause I can at least understand Billy frustration, even though I agree with soxhop that it's an awful reason to trade him.

EDIT: Doesn't seem to say. Oh well, frustration or no, it's a stupid reason to trade him.

I'm not sure how much credence to put into this story.  It seems like this kind of thing might happen with a bunch of guys on many teams, but we never hear about it.  I don't doubt that Beane is capable of using this type of conflagration to deal a guy without other apparent motivation, but this is not a credible enough story to run with it.

He's no Derek Jeter.

However, I don't buy into it. An "industry source", huh? Better get that second "source".

I thought I heard some rumblings about players that spoke up were getting traded by Beane and that Donaldson was just the latest.
Maybe I read it in the trade announcement thread?

The morning after the trade, word circulated of an in-season spat between Beane and Donaldson after Donaldson requested a couple of days off to get right physically. According to sources, Beane suggested if Donaldson were that banged up, he’d need to go on the disabled list, prompting the two to have words.
“We had a talk, but that was before the All-Star break,” Donaldson said via text when asked about the issue on Saturday.
Beane said in a text it was “normal protocol,” adding management typically has talks with players over potential DL stints. “Josh just needed a couple days and then he was back out there. No big deal.”

So Beane didn't like Donaldson's attitude, so he trades him for...Brett Lawrie?

Not sure I buy this at all.

I know that I don't.

Beane has a lot of people who want to see him knocked off his high horse.  I'm guessing the source for this is one of them.

The SF Chronicle (one of the first outlets on the story) wouldn't damage relations with a local club based on a flimsy source. The story is probably true.

The timing of the story makes me think it was leaked with Beane's blessing, or by a well-placed source who knew Beane wouldn't be upset to see it in print. There's some value in making it clear that the "Moneyball" GM cares about team chemistry and won't hesitate to ship any player to Siberia if he doesn't put the team first.

The story doesn't speak well to Beane's relationship with Melvin, but that's not a surprise -- we all knew being Beane's manager was a shit job.

I thought he made that clear years ago when he shipped Jeremy Giambi to some team or another back East.

I have to agree that this story seems more fiction than fact.  Beane may well have had issues with Donaldson, but dealing him for that reason would be terribly short sighted, even if he believed he was getting reasonable value back.  I think this was a sell high on Donaldson, and a buy low on Lawrie, and we'll have to wait 5 years to see how it all shakes out.  The story reeks of rumor.

If this was the 70s, sure.
