Shocking lack of folks that look like they actually know how to throw a ball.

Portnoy spent over $40 million for a compound on Nantucket — in the shittiest part of the island, with a terrible view, tucked inside Nantucket harbor.

If he had any taste at all, and wasn’t a moron, he would’ve bought something on the southern coast.

Does he still have that spread in Montauck as well?

As a long time PMT listener, its remarkable to see them now as one of the authoritative sports media outlets versus just an irreverent podcast.

It feels like many people connected with sports - athletes, coaches, executives - are going to them ahead of network shows or programs where middle aged non athletes have plenty of takes.

While many of those shows feel like they are struggling to stay relevant amid the rise of player produced content, PMT seems to fit well into the current environment. The players - and not the old never-were types (Shank but basically all the Glob writers we grew up with) - can explain what it is that we are seeing in the games while a pod like PMT focuses more of the fan experience as well as the voice of silliness when those involved are taking themselves too seriously.

Coast Guard rescues Barstool CEO Dave Portnoy off of Nantucket coast

He needs to start wearing red shirts with a white bucket hat.
He unhooked the boat before he fired it up? Idiot. It's one thing to have engine failure once you're underway but it's a whole other level of ineptitude to unhook everything, start drifting and then figure out you can't get it started.

We see these people on the lake with their six figure (or beyond) boats who have no clue what they're doing and it would be comical if you didn't have to worry about a 35' cabin cruiser crushing you because they don't understand things like who has the right of way.

Me too. He was a great part of the show and added a layer they will struggle to replace.

Also, I suspect its a great move and Jake will be employed fairly quickly.
I'm not sure it was Jake's idea, seems like they may have thought it was time to move on with a newer, younger intern. Without the cache of PMT he's fairly boring, and I say this as someone who loved him with the boys.

He was doing more PGA and other stuff so I think it was mutual more than anything. He wanted to be an announcer. PMT gave him a platform but was ultimately holding him back especially since Dave said they’re moving away from live broadcasts. The opportunity wasn’t there anymore through no fault of anybody’s so it was a natural progression.

I think it was @Salva135 talking about Gruden's independent work on youtube and then I saw other clips on social that were great. The stuff with Barstool is already very funny.

It's kind of funny Big Cat grew up in Newton and lived there for 18 years. He was a big Boston sports fan until after college and Dave basically told him to run Chicago and keep quiet about it.

I don't care, lots of people have weird reasons for following their teams. But he's definitely taking some heat for letting this go as long as it did.

I agree it’s funny - it was pretty surprising to me. There’s a picture circulating of him looking like the most mid-2000s Masshole ever, which is great.

The problem with Big Cat is that he is so chronically online and sensitive that he was never going to be able to keep quiet once this got out. Especially when Kirk Minihane and his army of losers caught wind of it.

It is remarkable, though, that he decided to switch allegiances in 2007. Right after a 2nd Red Sox World Series and a Pats *almost* perfect season. That's pretty crazy.

What is wild is the Mass Cat thing has been out there for years. If you ever go to the Reddit, it would be mentioned all the time. So this wasn't some secret. And this story really means nothing, BC created a Chicago persona to build his podcast and then became the persona. Fake it till you make it, I guess. It's a little devious but no felonies have occurred here.

Anyone who would care about this is just sad and pathetic. It's a freaking sports blogger turned podcaster.

Basically, what happened was Kirk came at him with this in a Surviving Barstool episode when he was eliminated (yeah I watch it. Guilty pleasure. It's a fun show.) Then Kirk's minions immediately ran with it. Big Cat probably should have gotten out in front of it way beforehand, as I think the show was taped months ago. But it ended up spiraling. The whole thing is a bit amusing to me that he tried to "hide" this for so long. But I'm still a fan of the guy and PMT.

I'm not a huge Barstool guy but I watch KFC radio on Youtube when they have comedians on that I like. The Youtube algorithm somehow got me to watch the first episode of Surviving Barstool and I've watched every episode so far. It is definitely entertaining and I don't know half the cast. I've come to like a bunch of them (Bussin' and Chickets guys are pretty fun).

I don't even care about the Big Cat drama but it's not shocking to see Kirk has been continuing to be a prick since leaving EEI.

I don't get it. I thought everyone knew Dan was from Newton originally, grew up there, and basically carpet bagged Chicago for Barstool?
You're right that this has been far from a secret, but I think there are a bunch of newer fans to PMT over the past few years who just know of Big Cat as the Chicago guy. Listening to the PMT episode discussing this, a lot of this comes down to Big Cat listening/caring to much about the internet trolls (and god knows a show like PMT will attract a lot of them).

Historically, Big Cat has been thin skinned. He is pretty good at poking fun at people, but he has a tough time when the joke is turned on him. This was worst case scenario, because Kirk is legit crazy and does not ever let anything go. Dan could have gotten ahead of this years ago but I don't think he factored in Kirk being such a wild card.

Big Cat is a content machine and he has been integral to the Barstool universe. I think he is a good change of pace for people who find Portnoy to be a turn-off.

If his Chicago fandom is just a bit, he sells it pretty well. He was great during the Cubs world series run, and has seemed genuinely beaten down by the continuous futility of the Bears. The Cody Parkey Double-Doink Game was hilarious, it is tough to fake that kind of sadness and rage.

I am a PMT fan (and while I am not a Portnoy fan per se, some of his detractors here at SoSH are a bit over the top to the point where it feels a bit like envy) and I wasn't aware that Big Cat was a Masshole. This changes my enjoyment of PMT by approximately zero percent.

The people who care about this stuff really do need to go touch grass.

I actually like Big Cat more now. If there’s one thing Barstool needed less of, it’s was Boston sports fans and their opinions.

I 100% buy Big Cat’s explanation.Guy moved to the mid west for college and fell in love with it.

And Kirk tripled down on this and went FULL BORE on Big Cat yesterday during the Surviving Barstool final. To the point where clearly everyone was uncomfortable -- even Portnoy. I suppose this nuttiness presents some form of entertaining "content" for Barstool, but does Kirkman really add anything else to the company? I think I read his podcast barely does any numbers. Why keep a loose cannon like this around? Makes no sense.

His live shows make money and a lot of the bigger people at Barstool (Portnoy, Chiclets, Bussin, Jeff Lowe) like him.

Same. Just because my identity is fixed to my childhood teams doesn't mean that's the only valid way to form sports connections. I know a fair number of people who made later, very strong attachments. There's probably some explanation about their childhood that didn't fix permanent bonds; so be it.

The brand management toxicity... boy there are a lot of assholes in sports media.

To me, it's not dissimilar to any sports talk radio host coming into a new market and talking about the local teams.

Sports media is run like a frat house, all the way up to the WWL. It's an industry where a lot of people have never had to grow up.
