Steaming toward the NHL trade deadline with a bushel of assets, there was growing belief around the NHL Saturday night that the Rangers and Boston Bruins could be closing in on a deal for rental winger Rick Nash.
Rangers GM Jeff Gorton, who was the Bruins assistant GM prior to coming to New York, is believed to have multiple offers on the table for Nash, 33, who will be an unrestricted free agent July 1.
An NHL source said that the deal could happen quickly, but that it was not imminent as of Saturday evening.
The Bruins, as reported by The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun Saturday afternoon, made a significant offer.
For it to work for the Bruins, the Rangers will have to eat a significant portion of the remaining amount of Nash’s $7.8 million cap hit. Even then, Boston would need to create some cap relief to fit Nash onto its roster.
Boston was also believed to be interested in Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh, who has one year left.
