All the more ridiculous that you chose to be a Jets fan...when every real Pats fan hated the Dolphins a HELLUVA lot more during the Grogan era. So, good job there.
For fucks sake, Nana thought Danny boy had nice eyes, why are you trying to apply logic to the situation. I was 5 and got ken obrien.

What are you even talking about?

You're the fan of a team that every single season has to pump themselves up for a rivalry game by calling it your Super Bowl.
If I was a pats "fan" I wouldn't have to pump myself up at all during down years, I'd just pretend the pats didn't exist and the games wouldn't even be on tv.

I look to the book of Ecclesiastes often when I ponder my path as a Jets fan. The book of Job also contains relevant wisdom but it is less applicable to your post and more general to being a Jets fan.

Um, you got me?

Look, congrats on rooting for one of the half-dozen or so worst NFL teams in history. You're closer to the worst ever than you are to NE. You're the Jaguars with a media market.

Which hasn't happened (the Pats being blacked out) in 21 goddamn years. Just stop. 1990 was a long time ago.

So what? I should stop being a fan because they suck. Isn't this exactly the type of stuff this thread is about?

I didn't say you should stop rooting for them. I said the Jets suck.

EDIT: Although in the spirit of the season, I shall try to chill out. Your grandma however, was a hell of a woman.

Name calling, saying the fan-base is not made up of real fans, saying the fans are bandwagon jumpers...  that's the stuff you do when you have nothing else to say.  That's how you make yourself feel better when you are jealous of the other team and facts aren't on your side.

To some Pats fans, the Seahawks have been great lately and we're mad at Pete cuz he sucked for us, so now the Seahawks fans are a bunch of bandwagoners.  Oh and Denver was terrible and Elway bought their success with a check to that Papa John's Giant Forehead in Mom Jeans. What a bunch of bandwagoners. They're not real fans like us.  Hurr hurr.

Some Jets fans realize no one can beat the Patriots in the AFC East and everything they got was due to good luck.  BAAAAANDwagonerz!  They're not real fans like us.  J E T S.  J E T S.  J E T S.

This whole thread reads like a bad Massarotti impersonation.

Right? The fucking stadium's been sold out for 21 straight years, at some point the bad old late 80s-early 90s period simply doesn't matter any more. But it seems like that's going to be held against the Pats and their fans forever. I've always felt that a huge portion of the national football fanbase simply can't mentally accept that the Pats are a team that matters now and not the one owned by shithead broke owners while playing in a terrible stadium.

Having never lived in New England and being (nominally, anyway) a fan of another team, I don't think this is the case.  Most people don't remember that far back.  The broad generalization of Pats fans that I always hear is this guy:

What's slightly ironic about that picture in the context of this thread (i.e., one that's about the Johnny-come-lately nature of the fan base) is that guy is rooting for a team that had never won a Super Bowl, playing its fourth home playoff game in 51 years of existence.

For what it's worth, that dude doesn't come anywhere close to the level of awfulness that this dickhead embodies:

Yes, that was just to explain my ridiculous sports fandom of jets/yanks/celts/bruins

Nana liked Grogan and Hurst
I was hoping she was a big fan of Grogan and Maurice Hurst.  That would have piqued my interest.

I'm 38, grew up in Maine, went to a Pats game every year or so in the late 80s/early 90s.  Rooted for the Randall Cunningham-era Eagles but that was about as "dual-fandom" as I got.

Maurice (Bruce) Hurst and Grogan?  I think they only played together on two teams, '89 and that memorable '90 team.  What a time to be a fan!  Nana was a diehard.

Edit:  Born in 1974.  Been a fan since 1985, really started following the team in 1987.  Saw my first game that year too, Pats being Indy 24-0.

I was also at the 9/1/1989 pre-season game.  Yeah that one.  Had high hopes going into that season too.

Let's get one thing straight. I do not feel better. The Patriots winning another SB is neither here nor there for me. Pats 3-4 in the big game during my life. the Jets are 0-0. The difference between 3-4 and 4-4 is.....minimal. I mean it is nice that 15 year olds only know the Pats as big game chokers but that doesn't mean much when the Jets can't even get in the big game.

Here to hoping Woody offers Belichik a billion dollars to be the next coach of the Jets.

But I thought the Jets were 0-2 in the big game in this era?

The reason for this, and not talking about people on this board, is that a lot of pats fans are Johnny come latelies who think they are smart because their HC is smart.

Most people over 35 that I know from Mass have a football team that is their real team (giants or dallas). Maybe they gave them up and swore a blood oath to Kraft or something but I was there, I know the truth

In defense of luckiestman, when I was living in NJ/NYC (for about a dozen years or so, so not a short sample), there WERE more than enough of former MA/NE transplants who either:
  • Were not big Pats fans but rode on the coattails of Pats' success
  • Were Pats fans but switched allegiances as they cave in to... well, whatever that makes fans allegiances switch
So I'm putting his take in a bit of a different context. Of course, he's posting on a Pats forum that probably has more long-time NE fans than almost any other boards (thanks to the main board) so the reactions are also not unexpected.

Eh, I went to school in upstate NY in the early 90s and I was amazed at how many NYers I met weren't fans of the Giants, Jets and Bills. Lots of random Cowboys, Redskins, Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders, etc fans.

Football is that kind of sport, given the scarcity of games and national TV coverage it's easy for people to adopt teams not from their home region. Not sure it was ever any more likely in New England than it was anywhere else.

That ad bothers me for a number of reasons, including its inaccuracy. Nobody moves TO Cincinnati.

That family is pretty much the worst family on Earth. I hope everyone gathers at the parents for Xmas and a sinkhole open up and swallows the house, killing them all.

They should have added another 5 seconds to the commercial, "We were a Pats and Red Sox family until an asshole in our family heard about Nana's love for Steve Grogan and Bruce Hurst..."
Tremendous.

Just further proof that this is THE best forum on the internet.

I've said to more than a couple of people in a particular NFL team jersey or hat, like, "Cowboy fan, huh?", and they've answered "no, I just like the colors."

Seems to me that the first team televised regularly into New England was the Cleveland Browns (and then the Giants). Browns because they were champions or near champions every year for a while. So, I was a Browns fan before the Patriots came public, never Giants.
