Maybe if we sign him as our GM we'll finally be able to pry Ryan Howard away from the Phillies.

Can't wait!

Proefrock, huh?

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky,
Like Ryan Howard bandaged upon a table;
Let us go, through double-parked on streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap bleachers
And cheesesteak restaurants wiz and wit:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question...
Oh, do not ask, "Why did they throw those batteries?"
Let us go and watch the Phillies.

In the room the players come and go
Talking of Ruben Amaro.

Wow, this one really came out of nowhere. I will need a bit to process before commenting.

I knew beforehand I'd be late to this joke, but then I find out that my joke would have been second-best as well. Well done.

Why this wasn't announced back in June will forever confuse me. It was known, he knew, the FO knew.

A month before the trade deadline?

I noted this in the MacPhail thread, but Ruben Amaro Jr. will likely manage the accomplishment of having the Phillies finish worse off than the preceding year for every year of his tenure.

2009 (takes over year after Phillies win World Series): Lose World Series
2010: Lose in NLCS
2011: Lose in NLDS
2012: 3rd place, NL East, .500 record
2013: 4th place, NL East
2014: 5th place, NL East, .451 record
2015 (so far): 5th place, NL East, .386 record

What are you talking about? Can you provide a link?
Andy MacPhail was hired in June (though they said he wasn't going to start until after the season, I am pretty sure he immediately took over major decisions), and it was basically said he was looking for a new GM. Once that hire was made, it was without a doubt RA's last breath as their GM.

It truly would be an impressive feat, if he's able to take a World Series Champion, and turn them into the worst team in MLB in seven years, without holding even one Marlins-style fire sale.

Of course it's Amaro, so he probably can't seal the deal.

So I guess Ben's next stop will be Philly, huh?
I thought the same thing. They've already traded everything not nailed down (ie Howard); they need to rebuild their drafting and development and start producing useful MLB players.

They could (and have) done a lot worse.

And with the season over, Ruben Amaro has achieved the incomprehensible.

He took over the World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, and under his steady hand they became progressively worse each and every year of his tenure until, finally, now they are the worst team in Major League Baseball.

Congratulations, Ruben.

They staved off 100 losses. That's something.
