Should the Red Sox go all out to sign Yasmani Tomas?

not sure where the Sox could squeeze him in for 2015 without a wholesale restructuring of the roster.
If the FO wants to be active in the trade market this winter, they're a bit short of chips unless they unload some of The Kids. One exception is Cespedes. While he's not the shiniest asset, a one year rental is probably of value to someone out there.

I dont quite get why we went after Rusney, a lesser prospect (in comparison to Tomas), who plays a position we have other talent (from Victorino, to Mookie to JBJ), instead of going after Tomas who has power (we dont have much, other than Papi and Cespedes, and Nap) and plays corner OF (where we dont have legit options. I dont consider Craig, for example, to be one).

I suspect because he is young talent that costs nothing but money, an increasingly rare commodity in baseball.

Castillo has multiple skills, which mitigates the risk of a flameout. Even as a mediocre hitter, he can still provide value with defense and baserunning. Tomas needs to hit to be a valuable player, and hitting is the toughest skill to assess without reps against MLB-caliber pitching.

The glut of speedy OF talent isn't much of a glut. Victorino is often-injured and under contract for one more year. Cespedes is under contract for one more year, and is more of a corner OF. JBJ may never hit enough to be a MLB regular, even with his otherworldly defense. Mookie and Holt are both infielders playing the OF to get their bats in the lineup, and either could be needed at 3b depending on how that position ends up. Nava is a limited player who's probably never going to block anyone.

Even a Cespedes/Betts/Castillo/Victorino/Nava (JBJ, Brentz in AAA) OF isn't exactly stacked. If Tomas is the answer in LF or at 1b/DH, that's an entirely separate concern. Given Napoli's contract status and Ortiz's age, it's not like those positions are locked down forever, either. There's room for Castillo and Tomas. It's not an either/or proposition.

I'd imagine because there was no certainty of us acquiring Tomas while the opportunity cost for Castillo was only cash. Not to mention Rusney looks pretty good.

Can't say I'm too broken up about this.  His stats in Cuba just didn't wow me.  He seems like a hacker and even while being a hacker, wasn't putting up the god-like numbers that Abreu and Cespedes posted.  Abreu was regularly posting an OPS of 1.250+ (as high as 1.377 one year); Tomas is nowhere near that.

As others have said, at one point, one of these Cuban guys is going to flame out badly.  Not saying Tomas will be that guy, but he looks to get paid a lot and seems like the least appealing in terms of production+tools compared to the likes of Abreu, Puig, Cespedes and Castillo.

EDIT - Tomas.  TOMAS.  Failure!
