Why offer it? If he accepts, you will end up adding $20M in payroll b/w raises to Duvall and Verdugo to bring back the same OF. I don’t think the risk is worth the pick, which will suppress his value.

Couldn’t you just deal him and pay down some of the money in a trade for a prospect? Kind of unusual and some players wouldn’t appreciate it, but a player accepting a QO likely has much different expectations than one signing a 1-year FA contract.

Edit: It might be nice to enter FA with Duvall on an expensive one-year deal for security and then pull off more ambitious moves.

Because while it's a somewhat small sample size that he will almost certainly regress from, his current SLG of .593 would be 3rd in the AL if it qualified. There will be deals that look worse than Duvall for the QO. The Sox have shown a willingness to a pay a bit of a premium for a shorter deal.

Is that such a bad thing? Verdugo, Duran, Yoshida and Duvall is a top 5 outfield this season.

The team wasn't hurt by their play, it was the middle infielder and starting pitching injuries that killed them.

This outfield would be very high variance, but certainly not a sure team weakness. Plus, maybe we get lucky and Duvall signs elsewhere and we get a good pick from the QO.

I just checked this the other day for Severino, you can’t trade someone on a QO until June 15.

Good to know, thanks.

Duvall on a 1/$20 QO-type deal may also neatly solve the post-Turner plan for DH.

Duran - CF/LF
Devers - 3B
Story - SS
Casas - 1B
Duvall - RF/LF/DH
Yoshida - LF/DH
Wong - C
Urias - 2B
Rafaela - RF/CF

Bench: Reyes, Refsnyder, McGuire, XX (Longoria or Urshela)

Is that lineup good enough? I don’t know.

Verdugo missing.
I think it's pretty likely that he gets included in a trade package, especially if they keep Duvall. And it seems increasingly likely Duvall gets a QO and accepts so he can prove he can stay healthy.

Obviously depends on the market but I'd love to see him traded for a starter. He still can't hit lefties for shit (.637 OPS this season) and his attitude problems concern me a lot. I also don't see the Sox extending him so it makes sense to try to maximize the value we can get. And if Rafaela really shows out in September that only increases the likelihood that he gets dealt. I'd be more than happy with an OF of Yoshida/Duran/Duvall/Rafaela with Yoshida DHing most of the time.

I'm not sure the "prove he can stay healthy" part tracks with the nature of his recent wrist injuries and his post-injury performance. He'll also be 35 Monday. I doubt he's looking long-term. If he can get a 2-year deal somewhere, he'll take it. He wont get an offer for more than that. 1-yr QO is fine with me if they have the room in the OF.
