Anyone see Cuti's response to his McCallister after he whined about the officiating? Romero said "Go cry at home" lol
Judging by my social media feeds and angry texts from LFC fans, there are a few who could stand to hear that message. And I'm fully cognizant that were the roles reversed we'd be screaming bloody murder, but I can't imagine there were too many LFC supporters upset about the dubious Sissoko hand ball call in the CL final so I find myself a little unsympathetic here...

Spurs title aspirations (along with Arsenal, LFC or any other contender) will probably have more to do with how mortal City are than anything. If they are the typical infallible selves, I don't see anyone having the horses to compete this year. But if they have major issues in midfield and drop more points than usual, one of the other contending teams can catch them.

And here we go: Manor Solomon suffered injury in training. Out 2-3 months. Gonna see more Veliz.

That's brutal luck for Solomon, who had a great opportunity to get some serious run. Spurs are still in great shape as long as Son/Kulu stay healthy--it does seem like Ange has prioritized Son's legs a bit, taking him off early in most of the games this season. No outside competition for Spurs makes depth less of an injury, but the wingers are definitely getting hit hard.

The streak of 2+ goals ends, but a win is a win. Really dumb second yellow from Bissouma is gonna cost him the Fulham game and he's just one yellow away from another game off.

Had Spurs been a bit better at finishing, this game could have been 3-0 within 7 minutes, but it is what it is. Getting 3 points when not playing your best is a good thing.

Gil and Lo Celso both on the bench, so that's a good sign.

Some thoughts as Spurs head into the international break at the top of the table:

- Bissouma plays the game with balls and an edge, which has been a needed kick-in-the-ass for the side in addition the more progressive approach to attack under Ange. He has been arguably the best player in the side, even including the boneheaded red card which almost cost them from taking three easy points against a relegation-bound side like Luton. It's crazy Spurs got him for € 29 million when Caicedo ended up going for 3.5x that this past summer.

- Sarr has been much better than expected as a regular starter for this side, although he has come back down to earth a bit after a blistering start. It will be a test for him to play a full game without Bissouma, and future things like a dip in form from Sarr, the AFCON, and injuries are going to test the midfield depth of Spurs. GLC will hopefully come back which is very important, as will be the return of Bentancur, both of whom should have the passing chops to play the way Ange wants to play. Hojbjerg and Skipp are capable players, but we've seen from their relative lack of run in favor of Sarr that they don't pass the ball the way Ange wants them to.

- The play at fullback has been a real revelation. After years of struggling to replace the Walker/Rose combination, Spurs have hit on Udogie, who we didn't really know what we had when he started the season but has turned into a complete, attacking-oriented fullback that can really get into dangerous areas and create opportunities for others. Porro has provided similar value, after looking completely lost last season, he has gotten his feet under him and provided steady play at right back. Just as important, Porro has been a much more capable defender under Ange, after being a real butcher last year. Davies and Emerson provide defensive depth at both sides, and Ange has not been shy to sub them on late in a game where Spurs are looking to protect a lead. If Udogie/Porro miss time, I'm not sure if they have a like replacement, at least from an attacking perspective. Maybe you move Kulu back, or Sessegnon gets healthy and plays that role.

- Vicario has been outstanding since the first couple of games. I was dubious of him getting handed the job without too much of a track record in Italy, but he has made some really impressive stops and been a big upgrade with his feet over the Lloris/Foster combo from last year. I keep thinking he is going to have a major fuck-up with playing out the back, but it has yet to happen.

- At CB, Romero has been outstanding this season. He's given you all of the good Romero stuff, the pace and aggression to challenge anyone, the recovery speed, the aerial dominance and even a bit of an attacking threat, without any of the negative Romero stuff. He's avoided bone-headed challenges and kept himself on an even keel, hopefully maturing as he gets older and players did vote him vice-captain, so you know he has the respect of the locker room.

- Mickey appears to be yet another high-value signing. Coming in from Wolfsburg, he checks all the boxes you would want from a high quality CB. Tall but very, very fast for his position and playing with a typical Dutch utility, he has quickly adapted to Ange ball and has been a perfect fit next to Romero. The depth at CB is not that great, Dier is the only true CB on the team and hasn't even made the bench for most games this season. I imagine the plan would be Davies or Emerson at CB as backup options, but it would be nice if there was a more reliable back-up that could be brought in to fill any potential holes.

- Maddison and Son are the key engines to any goal scoring on this team. Maddison has given Spurs a creative presence from central midfield for the first time since Eriksen was sold (not counting Kane's forays as a playmaker) and he has been the perfect player for Ange ball. I've been clamoring for a player like him for years and it's great to see someone the team that actually has ideas and can attack a low block. After a worrisome season last year, Son is just as effective as he has been at his peak, especially with him playing for as a CF and less of a winger, a possible concession for some declining pace. It's notable that Ange has been pretty active in pulling them in games. Maddison has only played the full 90 three times, and Son has yet to play 80 or more minutes in a club game this year. Without any European competition, the goal has to be to get them to play every league game.

- The other attacking options are a mixed bag. Johnson got hurt before we could really see anything from him. Pretty much the same for Solomon (although I like his pace and skillset as a sub off the bench to run at tired defenses). Kulu has a very taxing job given he plays a lot of minutes and presses hard. He has been productive but often leaves you wanting more when he gets on the ball because when it works out it's so tantalizing. Gil has not played yet this year, and Perisic is out until at least the spring, if not the whole year.

- Richarlison needs to start scoring more goals. He had at least two chances early against Luton and he failed to convert both. Spurs were spoiled having Kane for so many years--its very hard to find a reliable striker who can score a lot of goals consistently in the Premier League. During Kane's tenure, Spurs saw pretty much every other club, including the big boys like Chelsea, United and even City, go through phases were they couldn't find a solution at striker. Richarlison theoretically possesses the ability but he needs to start scoring more regularly, or Spurs will go find someone else and let them try,

- The glass-half empty view is that Spurs xG is poor compared to their peers, they currently are sixth in xGD, at +4.2, just behind Everton of all clubs. City (+9.4), Newcastle (+9.1) and Arsenal (+8.3). Spurs have regularly outperformed their xG, but that was when Kane was on the team and he always well overperformed his xG thanks to his clinical finishing.

- The other negative would be Spurs have had a bit of a soft schedule. While taking 7 points from Arsenal, Liverpool and United has to be celebrated, the rest of the schedule has been mostly minnows, with Spurs having already played all three of the recently promoted sides, plus Bournemouth. Not only have they yet to play City or Newcastle, they've also avoided the more powerful middle class teams, like Brighton, Aston Villa and West Ham, as well as a Chelsea side that may be getting it together under Poch. A stretch in late November/early December, where they play Villa, City, West Ham and Newcastle, will give us a lot of answers about how serious they are as title contenders.

Great post, but a quick note--Romero was not voted vice-captain. Ange picked all 3 guys.

and Son has yet to play 80 or more minutes in a club game this year.
Son played 90 against ManU and Bournemouth, but not since.

Agree with all of this. VDV did an interview recently where he spoke to the partnership he's quickly formed with Romero. My favorite part was how their temperaments compliment each other, so that VDV has become more aggressive thanks to Cuti's influence and Cuti's become a bit calmer with VDV's influence. They are one of the best CB pairs in the EPL IMO, especially for big club tactics (i.e., high line, possession-based systems).

We really do need GLC to get healthy because I think he's probably the best option to replace Biss. Hoj can do the job OK if the opponent isn't pressing, but he doesn't have the tight control and turning chops. GLC doesn't have the same destroyer ability as Biss but he can do the possession stuff nearly as well I think/hope.

At this point in his Spurs career, I simply refuse to believe that Giovani Lo Celso will ever do anything more useful for the club than the meh half-season he had under Mourinho until I see it happen.

He's once again managed to pull himself together in time to get into an Argentina squad, where I am sure he'll tweak something to keep him out until the next international break.

Ange disagrees with me it seems which is a good sign for Gio, but he's a player I simply cannot get emotionally or intellectually invested in any more.

I think the key to having any sort of depth in the midfield is Bentancur coming back 100 percent healthy.

No one can replace Maddison, but Bentancur can replicate most of what Sarr and some of what Biss gives you I think.

Romero came off early in yesterday's match, said his ankle was tender, but he claims he's fine and he came off early because he has a big Spurs game this weekend.

Not great news, but hopefully he's fit.

A very solid, no-nonsense win today at home against Fulham. The loss of Bissouma didn't appear to be much of a problem, Hoj was fine stepping in and Sarr was very good. Really this game highlighted the strength of Romero and MVDV. Mickey's pace in particular was incredible at times, with the highlight being late in the game, after already playing a hard 85 minutes, his recovery speed to track down Harry Wilson, who should have been in on goal, to slow Wilson down and force a much more contested shot. I'll reiterate what I said before the break about Romero, he's giving you all of the good he gave last year but almost none of the bad. He's direct, emphatic, tenacious and avoiding costly mistakes.

The offense was sloppy in the final third at a lot of points, but they just were so active in winning the ball back and quickly and aggressively trying to create chances. Kulu had a very strong game, but had nothing to show for it. Son and Maddison both shined through with moments of brilliance, and the overall pressing of the front line and the full backs really pressured Fulham into two mistakes which led to the two goals, but Spurs really could have had 4-5 goals.

The limited negatives would be the reserves were very rusty after coming in, GLC, Brennan Johnson and Veliz were not very impressive during their cameo appearance. Skipp was fine coming on in the midfield, as was Emerson who came on at the '55 minute mark to relieve Udogie, who put in an extremely active shift. Richarlison also is really missing his finishing form, and it's getting to the point where you have to wonder if he will every break out of this slump.

The two dark thoughts I have on days like today are that it was incredible waste that Spurs went with veteran coaches with outdated philosophies in Jose and Conte instead of finding the next Poch. Spurs are a completely different team under Ange, the intricate passing and aggression they have on offense is just so dramatically different from what they were doing for the last few years. The second thought is what the team would look like with Kane starting instead of Richarlison (with the evidence being the four goals he scored in a preseason game against Shakthar Donetsk) but alas, it was not to be.

Good post. I'll add a few thoughts.

Starting with your dark thoughts, I wonder if Ange's success will open the door for other managers that don't come through the rarefied air of big 5 football. I mean, we all have come to know and appreciate the brilliance of Ange's tactics and man management, but if an EPL club fires their manager midseason and can choose between a retread (let's just say, Nuno Espirito Santo for example) or some other manager who's been winning nonstop and building projects worldwide but is currently managing outside a big 5 league (let's just say Gallardo for example), perhaps now the club will consider the latter types more often.

All of which is to say that I think Levy/Paratici were trying to accomplish 2 things with the Mou/Conte era: 1) Keep Harry Kane happy and engaged, and 2) win a trophy. For all their faults, those 2 managers have a history of success and despite Levy being incredibly shrewd and forward-looking, I feel like he gave into the Spurs inferiority complex with those hires (especially Conte). The fact that Kane respected those managers and kept up his productivity during those seasons is a sign of limited success.

Vicario only had to make 3-4 saves on Monday, but 2 of them were exceptionally good. He's been excellent and he deserves a ton of praise.

I'm as big of a Romero fan as there is out there, but VDV was significantly better yesterday. His pressing led to the first goal FFS! His pace is something to behold, and while Romero also had a good game, he was playing second fiddle to VDV and that's totally OK. There's gonna be cagier games where Romero's skills are more important, but against Fulham it was VDV's time to shine.

I really hope Udogie's OK, because his underlapping runs ahead of Richy were really fun to watch and effective. The latest word I saw is that Ange expects him to be fit for Friday. Porro continues to impress and he's phenomenal. His defense has really come around and his decision-making is improving too.

Hoj is truly a fascinating player for spectators like me. He doesn't look like he's doing much, but he's quite effective when you look at it. He didn't do any of Bissouma's slick turns, but he was tidy (that's generous, he was very conservative) in possession, but he did hit some terrific long diagonals that put FFC on their back foot. He was solid enough defensively.

Sarr was excellent and it's pretty damn impressive how much ground he covers for the side. With Biss out he was the worker who let everyone else do their thing. While I can't wait for Ben10 to return, Sarr continues to perform and he still has a lot of runway to improve.

Madders was excellent again, and it's quite amazing how well he fits into Ange's side. He and Son should've combined for an additional goal or 2 (1 chance in the first half and another in the second had me screaming) but they were giving FFC's defense fits.

Richy's finishing doesn't seem to be coming around any time soon, but his final third passing has been outstanding and a pleasant surprise. Combine that with his world class pressing (highlighted by leading to the second goal) and we have a very useful player. The Extra Inch podcast was talking about how in an ideal world the LW is more of a 1v1 specialist, and Richy becomes an ideal backup to both the LW and Striker spot--i.e., what I think many of us expected him to be when Kane was still around.

What more can you say about Son? The guy is a world class finisher and he hasn't missed a beat, and really has improved, since moving BACK to striker (I still maintain that I saw this coming since most people seem to forget that Son did the striker job really well a few seasons ago when Kane went down injured).

Thinking back on it, I feel like Deki had a quiet game. Not a bad game by any means, he's playing so well lately, but more just that our attack was reliant on pressing rather than combo play.

The subs were rough--no other way to put it. I give Brennan Johnson and GLC passes since they're coming back from injury, but I thought Skipp was pretty poor (I still like him quite a bit and his workrate is quite insane), and Emerson is a big step down from the starters.

The dream lives on until Friday at least! COYS!!

Only note I have on an otherwise really good post, Royal was playing out of position and I actually think he did pretty well with it. Really that should have been Davies when fit.

Huh, maybe I need to do a rewatch of his performance--I really like the player and I think shutdown defender FBs are generally underrated. It's just hard to square that with Ange's swashbuckling and technical approach.

VDV is coming along faster than I thought. I’m already disappointed that Liverpool missed their shot at him. I’d feel much better about covering for Robbo with VDV out there.

I got to go to the Fulham game on Monday. The stadium is really amazing. We have season tickets in Allegiant and I have been to games in SoFi, that piece of shit in Santa Clara and MetLife. TH stadium makes all of those newish NFL stadiums look kind of average. The finishes on the stadium and the fan experience is just incredible. The efficiency of entry and movement is much better than an NFL game, You can get in and out in 10 minutes if you want. On a night when the locals were saying it was kind of quiet, the noise from the huge South Stand was really incredible. I definitely recommend going to a game. Getting there early and walking up from Seven Sisters was quite the experience as well. We hit up two pubs and ate some kebab prior to getting to the game, it is really neat how the stadium is integrated into the neighborhood.

I spent much of the night focusing on Jedi Robinson and Deki beating the crap out of each other. To my untrained eye, Jedi is one of the few guys both bigger and stronger than Deki, while also being faster than him, so I think Deki being relatively ineffective and having minimal impact was largely due to Robinson. Most of the people sitting around me thought Jedi was pretty clearly the best Fulham player on the pitch. Udogie is going to be the best left back in the world before long, but America has a really great left back if Jedi can put a run of consistent health together.

First time I saw this I just saw Fulham and thought you were describing Craven Cottage and I was very confused.

TBF, Craven Cottage is supposed to be one of the best atmospheres in EPL football. Not sure what reputation Selhurst has.
By whom? It's arguably the outright worst.

Ed: CC, not Selhurst, which is pretty loud, though some find the whole Ultra concept cheesy and annoying.

My apologies, I should clarify. I heard that there's a bunch of pubs near the river near Craven Cottage that people enjoy. Not the case?

Depends what we mean by atmosphere I suppose. Fulham by my understanding ranks high on "nice spot to go and watch a nice match with nice people" and consequently low on "maniacal bear pit energy".

Oh yeah, that's definitely true. Expensive, but the area around the ground is gorgeous. People tend to walk down to the ground from Putney Bridge underground station through a public park that's next to the river. It's a lovely experience in spring or early fall.

That was the best 4-1 loss I’ve ever seen. I’m almost completely non-plussed about the loss.

Ange having a high-line pressing go at them with 9 men was awesome. No idea if it was smart and don’t even care because it was thrilling.

This team now knows exactly what they are. All out all the time. Guys gotta love playing like that.

City is way better than anyone else, but I’m more confident of top 4 after that loss somehow.

Though it becomes dimmer if VDV is out for a long time. That would be the real issue with that game.

Plus Romero will be suspended for 3 games and Udogie for one. Get ready for a Porro-Dier-Davies-Emerson backline.

I actually think Dier played pretty well given the circumstances and how he was completely cold having not played at all this season.

it was a heroic effort by a guy who is fundamentally miscast possibly in any high line defense, let alone an outnumbered high line defense.

Dier was great.
Vic was amazing.
This team has identity, pride and fight.

Tread water until VdV and Cuti are back.

Also, Richarlison to have surgery, VDV no word yet, but likely somewhat serious. Maddison--nothing definitive, hopefully the international break helps a lot.

But holy fuck--I love Dier, and I know he's not built for what we are going to play now, but if that goal had counted--damn, that would have been awesome. Same with Betancur. That close.

I'm not as sanguine as you lot. I think we're looking at a run coming up where the results match my preseason expectations. I'd take 3 points right now from the next 3 matches, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was 2. 4 would be good.

I don't think anyone is overly positive at the points we will accumulate. We can still beat Wolves. It'll look more like last season's team though.

Reports that VDV won't need surgery, but will be out til January.

And Maddison just got an England call-up so maybe he's okay?

Damn. Maddison's injury is a huge blow, he has been the complete turnkey for this team on offense and I have no idea how they can fill his spot while he is out, especially with a critical run of games coming up against top competition. GLC, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you...

Perfect timing for that guy to be okay for a match, then go and get injured playing for Argentina.
