I assure you no offense intended. So, how much of a hero do you want to be to the kid ? What's the gaming monitor going to be ? A 'standard 24"" or something serious 27-30 ? If he has a strong opinion on AMD v nVidia it's not going to make any difference for your business use. A pair of some midrange video cards is probably the easiest & most flexible answer.

No offense taken.

He doesn't have a clue about monitors or video cards. He just turned 12.  What do you consider to be a mid-range video card? Re: Monitor...I'd love to have a UHD 16x9 monitor flanked by a couple of standard monitors.

til 7/31

MSI is one of the "Big 4" remaining mb makers. I've been using MSI mb for years. This is the latest/greatest
Intel chipset , has all the features most will need, only reason to want something much better is if you want to do a max overclock or run dual very high end video for gaming.
Includes both DVI and HDMI (and VGA which no one cares about anymore) video out for the Intel cpu graphics, which many others don't . This is a $100 board everywhere else.

Crucial M500 CT480M500SSD3 480GB Mini-SATA (mSATA) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)   $200

Serious storage for laptops with an mSATA slot, way more than you need for just a boot drive, partition it.
Marvell controller. At least $30 cheaper than anywhere else atm.

WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM HD  $140 - $10 promo code = $130 til 7/11

Best quality WD consumer drive. Black = 5 yr warranty. You're not going to buy much more expensive
enterprise drives for home use, this is as good as it gets.

Sad to learn today that eCost.com has ceased operations. I dropped quite a few bucks there over the years. One of the few places that could beat Newegg's or Amazon's pricing on certain items.

Yep, once upon a time they had a pretty good pipeline to factory refurbs from a ton of companies that you couldn't find anywhere else... Got some great monitors there over the years.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540 20C6008SUS   today $530 with free ship

Amazon wants $595, this is for new not refurbs.

Great all around laptop:

15.6 screen (1366x768)
Intel i5-4200M cpu (2.5 GHz)
4 Gig ram
500 Gig 7200 rpm drive
DVD burner
b/g/n wifi, bluetooth, gig ethernet
full numeric keypad
trackpoint & trackpad
fingerprint reader
6 cell battery
Win 7 Pro x64

Even better this is the successor to the 535 I recently bought and love, which means it includes an M.2 slot.
You can plug in a 128 Gig (and soon 256 Gig) ssd drives into this slot, make that your boot drive and then it will really fly. ATM there is only one brand of M.2 2242 but more are coming in the next few months.

HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB 7200 rpm HD  today only shellshock deal at Newegg   $160 free ship

HGST is a WD company, these drives are specifically engineered for NAS use, 7200 rpm, 3 year warranty, probably as good or better than WD Black for NAS setups.
Even more impressive, currently at Newegg there are almost no really bad reviews which is amazing for any 4 TB drive.

Thank you for the heads up on this.  Stupid question time - when you say you can plug in a 128/256 Gig ssd drive into this slot, is that internal or external?  I have no confidence that I can open this thing up and successfully close it up.

M.2 like the earlier bigger mSATA formfactors are plug-in board mounted devices (always internal). M.2 comes in several sizes (all are 22 mm wide) but there are several "standard" lengths (don't you love 'standards' what have a ton of variables ?)  All the Thinkpads so far use a 42mm card so they are referred to as M.2 2242. In this case the slot is either populated by a WAN card (connect to your cellphone provider), or Lenovo ships some of these with an M.2 card that has generally 16 or 32 Gig of memory and are set up as 'supercache' utilities that are supposed to speed up the performance of the physical hard drive. These are of very limited utility. The laptop I cited above has this slot empty. M.2 cards of this size (2242) are just coming onto the market in sizes that are useful as a boot SSD.

Here's a link to how you add it: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD029369

Basically you pull the battery, remove 3 screws and remove the 'large cover', the slot will be empty, you plug the card in and screw one screw in to hold it. Done..

The process to clone your existing boot drive onto it is a bit more involved, but the physical install ain't rocket science.

This is the one 128 GIg drive that's been shipping http://www.amazon.com/MyDigitalSSD-Super-Cache-Solid-State/dp/B00EZ2E8NO/ref=pd_cp_pc_0
It's OK but uses a Phison controller which is not a well known maker and has decidedly average performance, several mainstream makers are releasing 2244 formfactor cards soon, I'm waiting.

The Lenovo Outlet this weekend:

Slightly more product, mostly at higher end (prices of $800 and over) and pricing even more irrational. There are a smattering of L440 Thinkpads, a mixture of i3 and i5 cpu based models..all at the exact same price: $428.40. Personally I wouldn't want anything weaker than an i5 in a laptop, but even there you have to look closely..i5-4200U can be clocked as slow as 1.60 Ghz though most are 2.4 to 2.6 Ghz. They have more than a few Thinkpad X240 models going for $800 or more using these underclocked i5s, I assume to provide better battery life... but at the cost of overall sluggish performance ?

Hey Coup, do you have any more info on how to do this?  I've been looking around and haven't been able to find a good step-by-step guide on turning my new mSATA into the boot drive.  Right now it's just sitting in my computer without doing much of anything.  I'd appreciate it if anyone had a good link to a how-to guide, because I'm stumped.  Thanks.

Virtually all apps that do drive imaging have options to clone your boot drive: Paragon software has several products, Macrium Reflect, Easus To-Do, ShadowProtect or even Acronis (my least favorite). Some utilities to do this are even free: Google "free boot drive clone software" although I strongly urge anyone to buy a full product so you can make full images quickly.

i7-3770 3.40 Ghz quad cpu

Dell UltraSharp U2412M Black IPS Panel 24" monitor   $265 - 10% code EMCPCHA48 = $240  til 8/4
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260047

1920 x 1200, 16:10 monitor

DVI and DisplayPort (and vga), no HDMI

Dell's 'standard' serious 24" monitor, good stand, usb 2.0 hub
The issue is what panel do you get: Dell has used both LG and Samsung panels, there are versions A00 thru A03, in theory everyone should be getting A03 by now, but current reviews show Newegg is still somehow shipping some A00 versions.

One recent review states:
"Cons: Monitor came with a warped stand. Contacted Dell to get replacement. They sent me a cheap monitor as a replacement. Told me they no longer have U2412M available for replacements. Returned the cheap monitor and jury-rigged a fix with silicon pads. Hate to think what I would have done if I had a problem with the screen itself.

Dell warranties are worthless!!!!!!!!!!!"

Dell is still selling these, so this doesn't make much sense unless it's the dreaded 'You bought a Dell that doesn't have a service tag' issue. I'd venture that this is still probably the best selling 24" 16;10 IPS monitor out there and when you have a good one most people coming from cheaper TN monitors are blown away, but it's hard to make sense of where Dell is at these days...

One of the best, 3 year warranty.

SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 2.5" 500 Gig SSD  $260 - $35 promo code EMCPCHA23 = $225  til 7/30

Dual band a/c wifi and BT
keyboard does NOT include separate numeric pad (few 14" screen models do)
trackpad & trackpoint
fingerprint reader
Win 7 Pro x64 (downgraded from 8.1 Pro, which you can request)

This model also includes an empty M.2 slot which can be filled with an M.2 2242 SSD card which can be made your boot drive and make this model very quick.
Careful, a ton of what appear to be similar E440's with only i3 cpu... at the same price.
In fact at the whole Lenovo site, the lower end Thinkpads (like the E series) only offer i3 based laptops as brand new... the difference in performance vs. the additional cost make these a a bad value, they are still making i5 versions of all these models, but you need to find them elsewhere...you want the extra performance for what should be very little more (or in this case the same price). BTW, i3 vs. i5 as to battery draw are insignificant.

Sumner's fav because it does handle more formats than anything else out there, at least 10 bucks cheaper than anywhere else.
That's the more expensive model, FWIW. The WDTV Live (as opposed to just WD TV, not Live) does the same media playback but can't TV-cast your android device's screen. It's normally available on Amazon for $82-84ish, but that price for the more expensive WDTV is probably worth it if you can't find the Live on sale for measurably less.

Mine are all the WDTV Live SMP, which is discontinued but you can still get refurbs on Amazon for $50-60ish.

Great deal on one of my preferred laser printers currently on the market, $75 from Amazon for the Canon D530 mono laser printer/copier/scanner with ethernet/USB connection. It can use inexpensive 3rd party toner replacement cartridges which is a big deal these days since most other printer makers hold you hostage to their own overpriced versions. I've had the previous generation of this model for about 5-6 years and it is still going strong.

I still run a pair of MF4150's which use the old FX9 or FX10 carts. The fill plug for those are either exposed or requires 1 min to burn away the plastic covering the plug. Each cart can be refilled twice without even thinking about emptying the used toner chamber (which is incredibly messy and not worth even trying). Generic toner refills at Amazon run under $3 each (in lots of 10), generic FX9/10 carts can easily be found for under $15. That brings the cost per cart down to under $7 per fill making Canons stupidly economic (refill twice then toss).

Tiger has a 2 day sale that includes lots of very low priced laptops:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/email/wem4209.asp?SRCCODE=WEM4209TT&cm_mmc=email-_-Main-_-WEM4209-_-tigeremail4209&utm_source=EML&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=WEM4209&cm_lm

The Acer given prominence is a single core cpu, nothing special, available for the same price at Amazon and there are comparable machines with same speed dual core cpus to be had at the same price.
There are tons of various off lease and refurbed very cheap laptops...the condition of these is likely to be all over the place, and many will have batteries that are near their end.

The Canon MF4770N multifunction is a great buy on our favorite line, note the free ship is ONLY TODAY 4/15 for $100.

Lenovo H500 Desktop  $379 - $100 coupon code = $279 with free ship

This new not refurb compact desktop that may well be what most of you will find more than sufficient:

Intel Pentium quad core 2.4 Ghz cpu
Intel HD graphics
4 Gig ram (upgradable to 8, uses laptop style so-dimm)
1 Tb 7200 rpm HD
DVD burner
b/g/n wifi & gig ethernet
1 x USB 3 & 4 x USB 2
7 in 1 card reader
external laptop type PS.

This is an odd bird: a motherboard with some expansion possibility: 1 pci express x 16 slot, 2 sata ports. But only 1 memory slot (if you want 8 gig you toss the 4 Gig so-dimm and replace it). The only video output built into the mb is.. vga ?? The case has little room for extra drives and no ps at all, it's an external laptop type. So you throw a real low end video card in (nothing that requires it's own power connection), hope that the external laptop ps can handle it and otherwise this little box could be all you require. Just go in understanding the limitations.

Note the User Guide link near the top of the page which can answer most questions about the weird layout of this formfactor.
