I am sad to see him go. I was always rooting for the redemption arc, knowing what he was capable of. Before his body broke down it was reasonable to think about him in the Hall of Fame someday. I did notice that after a year of flukey injuries in 2022, he had a year of much more traditional, can-his-body-do-this-anymore injuries in 2023, and my optimism for the comeback became more tempered. Anyway, he was terrific for a while and he ended 2018 in a magical way, best of luck you lunatic.

What do Doug Mientkiewicz, Jonathon Papelbon, Koji Uehara and Chris Sale have in common? They'll all be at the center of attention of any documentary of the showing the Red Sox winning the World Series during their time playing for Boston. It's a shame that injuries derailed his career after the 2018 season, but Chris Sale will always be remembered for that final K against Machado.

Sale day was always must see in our house. Whatever whim of life makes someone injury prone is not in the control of Sale, and I felt for him the last few years. I hope he has huge success going forward. Adieu Conductor!

Sale was terrific for the Sox for a few years and was instrumental in the 2018 title. The injuries were such a bummer but the guy gave his all for this team. Nothing but good memories and I hope - and expect - him to do very well in Atlanta.

My lukewarm take is that going to Atlanta specifically will be good for him, that's probably the best organization in baseball right now and he doesn't need to be an all-caps ace for them.

I think it will be good for Boston, too, don't get me wrong!

Best of luck Sale, thanks for 2018, and the minor league affiliates appreciate the new tvs.

If you’re able to turn the corner on your health, please do so very gingerly and be available to help knock the Dodgers out of the playoffs.

Our "gotcha day" with our dog was the clincher in 2018 - nearly named the guy after him (he's Louisville Slugger, Lou for short). Sale'll come back for some 2018 celebration someday, and if I'm there, I'll be screaming my neck off cheering for the guy. I hope he's got some good moments left in the tank - I had my issues with him, like many of us, but it was a thrill to watch him during the good days.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Sale away!
Judges would also have accpted:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5MAg_yWsq8

If anyone wants to try their hand at a lyric rewrite. . .there's not much to do here. Except Sale actually got us that pot of gold, and no one thought we may have traded him to LAA.

I'm sailing away
Set an open course for the Virgin Sea
'Cause I've got to be free
Free to face the life that's ahead of me

On board, I'm the captain
So climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try
To carry on

I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves, spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had

We lived happily forever
So the story goes
But somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But we'll try, best that we can
To carry on

A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope
And this is what they said
They said come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, lads
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, baby
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels
But to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
We headed for the skies

Singing "Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me, lads
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me

I hope the OP won’t be offended that I changed the thread title to the standard formulation we use when someone leaves who was on the 25-man playoff roster for a championship team. We aren’t going to have another one of these threads anytime soon — Devers is now the lone holdover from the 2018 team.

Ace pitchers invariably have a nasty disposition; it’s part of what makes them what they are on the field. It’s the rare ace who can make himself lovable off the field the way Pedro was. Clemens was the opposite extreme; he was hard to root for at times. Sale was somewhere in between — he was definitely a bit prickly, but he was no one’s idea of a super-villain. His starts were appointment viewing. I loved cheering for him here, and I’ll be rooting for him the rest of his career so long as he isn’t playing for Boston. Thanks for the memories.

Speak for yourself, I am hoping for a few next offseason.

Sale was maddening at times and awesome at times. It isn't his fault that a lot of people probably feel like the Scottish Trade hangs on his neck. He worked hard (too hard sometimes?), at least feigned accountability, and only wanted to help the team win.

Dugout phones across New England are breathing a sigh of relief this New Year's weekend.

Thank you for 2018 and for being a very good pitcher and a joy to watch during the times you were on the mound.

Thank you, Chris Sale, for coming in and putting those really fun ‘16-‘18 Red Sox teams over the top. May you deliver lunch on your bicycle much like you delivered on your contract extension right before your Game 7 start vs. the Cinderella 2024 Red Sox.

This made me sad. Chris was my favorite Sox since Petey.
You have a type! He is definitely of a type. Probably gonna be popular in Atlanta if he's able to perform.

People shouldn't say "what might have been" for his career generally (and no doubt many of you are not). He's pitched parts of 13 seasons, made 263 starts, has a *career* 2.97 FIP (ERA only slightly higher), 2189 Ks, up to 47.2 bWAR. Two big seasons in Atlanta could get him HOF reconsideration. He's had a long, brilliant and relatively fortunate career for a pitcher, with the exception of his second Sox contract. I would take him over Clayton Kershaw 100 times out of 100. Even diminished Sale was a better playoff performer than peak Kershaw.

I think the length of this thread after 24 hours is indicative of the overall connection Sox fans felt to Sale. Thanks for 2018 — good luck and enjoy the south.

The cradle of the game.
Thank you Chris Sale for 6 years, those 15 exquisite pitches on 10/28/18 and a reminder that, counter to the popular belief in here, a bird in the hand can actually be much better than 2 in the bush (Kopech and Moncada).

Mr Sale. Thank you for giving your all. I was thrilled when you were aquired and wish you all the best now that you've left. You're one of the best lefties I've ever seen.

He was fine. Amazing to watch for a very short time. Made Machado look silly. On a per dollar basis, his highlights are really expensive, but it ain’t my money. I found him tough to root for and don’t know why, but 2018 was great, so thanks — I hope the door doesn’t hit his boney ass on the way out but I also hope he stays healthy and kicks a little ass for the Braves.

It would’ve been even better if he drilled Machado in the knee, and then struck the next guy out.

Best of luck to Sale. He’ll always be a Red Sox World Champion.

It's funny because he was really great for about half a season (as always back then) and then wasn't the same. I had very little confidence in him by the time we got ro the post-season--more confidence than Kimbrell though.

The day my daughter was born, he struck out 12 and it was kind of the last time he was awesome.

My favorite thing to watch in baseball is a pitcher when he's on. I've been lucky as a Sox fan to witness some bona fide aces every 5 days: Clemens. Pedro. Matt Clement, for some reason. Beckett. Rick Porcello, in a season that inspired a Kate Upton tweet so good that I don't totally hate Twitter. Lester. Eovaldi. Sale was my favorite to watch since Pedro. He worked quickly. He pounded the strike zone. He's a hard guy to root for, but he's not the least-likeable pitcher of the Henry era and he's not David Wells.

Thanks for 2018.

I just don’t get why so many here have said he was a hard guy to root for. Like, why? He worked his ass off, was always accountable, quietly did charity work in the community (especially for vets). He was a good role model for the younger pitchers on the team. I just don’t get the dislike some have for this man. Sale didn’t make as many starts as any of us and especially him would have hoped over the last 4 years, but he left it all out there. He absolutely deserves a standing ovation when he comes back in early June.

In Game 4 of the 2013 World Series, Ortiz made a calm but impassioned speech to his teammates to get their heads on straight. They gathered around him and listened.

In Game 4 of the 2018 World Series, Sale threw an impassioned tantrum at his teammates to get their heads on straight. They scattered from him like so much buckshot.

It's not just the number of titles that divides the two men so starkly from each other in the Boston fandom.

I loved watching "good Sale" pitch, and his 2018 World Series closer stint was glory itself, but it wasn't just the selfish covid horseshit that made the dude hard to root for sometimes.

All the best in Atlanta, Mr. Sale. Hope you murder the Dodgers and the Sox run roughshod on you in the Series.

I’ve never heard anyone phrase that as a ‘tantrum’. The results speak for themselves, because after Sale’s rant, they went on to score a million runs and coast to a win giving them a commanding series lead.
On the other hand, Sale never recklessly smashed a dugout phone with a baseball bat nearly taking out Dustin Pedroia’s eyes (over a missed call in a regular season game). I do, however, remember Ortiz doing that. Sale had his own moments, of course, but he never put another teammate at risk of serious injury.

I read nothing after “Matt Clement”.

LOL, seriously though, I had forgotten about him even being on the Red Sox. I think I blacked it out from my memory. I would say though, that he was never a “bona fide ace” for the Red Sox. 18-11 with a 5.09 ERA in 44 starts in his Boston career.

Down the line, he'll be a guy you remember. Some guys you remember for a game, an image, a season, a quote, an off-the-field decision. Sale has one of all of those, for me (maybe not a quote.) The Machado K will be the lasting image, but I think for me it'll be the K's that I remember. Even when he was off, so, so many K's.

Not a guy I need to get a beer with, which makes it easier.

“Yeah Tony, it seemed like Vazquez didn’t even want to hug him when they won it all…”

Thank you Chris Sale.
You did your best and when you were heakthy and pitching it was a thrill. Not your fault that all the injuries happen or that Dombrowski signed an unnecessary extension.

Flags fly forever and 2018 was one hell of a ride.

This sums it up for me.

Thank you Chris Sale. To agree with others, you were the first appointment viewing Sox starter since Pedro for me (good Beckett and Lester were very good, but I can't remember making specific plans to watch them pitch). From 2017-2018 you started 59 games with a 2.56 ERA and 545 Ks, and of course closed out a World Series. That's an all timer stretch in the long and storied history of this franchise.

And I don't think we have to pretend the past three seasons didn't happen -- or ignore Sale's off-field behavior -- to agree that his first few seasons were sublime.

I've mentioned this before. The 2018 Sox did almost everything right, but Sale had shoulder inflammation at the end of July, and the Sox put him on the DL supposedly a precaution. That meant opening a key four-game series with the Yankees with Brian Johnson instead of Sale. They swept the series, basicalloy sealing the division. At that point, they should have been letting Sale take his time to prepare for the postseason. Instead, they inexplicably rushed him back the day he was eligible to pitch against the Orioles, a team they beat by 61 games.

He pitched five dynamite innings and got hurt again. I don't think he has ever been the same since, despite some flashes of brilliance including that 17K game in 2019.

That game against the Orioles was the famous 12 k’s in only 67 pitches or something. It was absolutely insane. And it was also the last time he threw a 99 mph fastball in a game until he did it last year against the Phillies.

Interesting fact. Kopech (4.5) and Moncada (14.4) have combined for a higher bWAR (18.9) than Sale (17.1) since the trade. And Kopech and Moncada did it for a combined salary of ~$45 million vs Sale at ~$114 million.
