This is a gold-plated opportunity to Rob Manfred to handle this properly and emerge as Adam Silver's peer in the ranks of commissioners.

Here
I feel badly for the Cardinals' players and managers, who likely have absolutely nothing to do with this, but will still get caught up in the shit storm. The players still went out there and won all these games.

Since it's the government looking into this to determine the nature of the crimes committed, penalties from MLB might be the least of the Cardinals' worries.

We need 47 SoSH corporate lawyers to debate what could happen here.

I honestly don't think it will end up creating a furor.  I think any media or national venting and rage will be directed at the front office and ownership, and I don't think anyone really will say that somehow Michael Wacha isn't as good as he really is because of these hacks.

Well, maybe it won't stick, but it's trending on twitter right now.

There really isn't enough WTF for this. How can you be as smart as Luhnow appears to be, and yet too dumb to realize that bringing your old passwords over with you is a bad idea?
And why the fuck does he even have his passwords written down in a list for them to see?

Is it certain that Luhnow didn't change his passwords? Or is that just a guess in this thread?

I blame the shitbags in IT that make me change my password every 4 weeks, that require 8+ digits, and that require one Capital, one number, and one "other" symbol.

Many passwords are not stored securely and can be read by anyone with backend access. It's a horrible practice but occurs all the time. Often for high level execs help desk / IT people are given passwords to do troubleshooting etc. again bad practice but happens.

Yeah, I guess I believe that. I naively thought all anyone stored was the encrypted or hashed passwords, but I should have known better.

Okay, now I see that it appears to be a "master list of passwords" that Luhnow and those who went with him to Houston.

What's with the Spygate references? The irony is Watergate is far more apropos than filming signals some feet from where it would have been legal.

Could MLB force a sale of the team if it's discovered that ownership was somewhat involved?

I find it difficult to think of this as a hack. Entering a readily available password is a crime even CSI: Cyber wouldn't investigate.

Accessing a computer or computer network that you are not supposed to have access to, regardless of how you did it, is a crime under a variety of state and federal statutes.  Easier to call it "hacking" than "illegally accessing a network."

What has this organization won since this scandal broke?

What is coming before "-gate" here?
I was going to use Cardinal-ghazi, but that's too unwieldy. Maybe Cardinazi?

John Mozeliak was seen taking his laptop into the bathroom and locking the door for a total of 6 minutes and 12 seconds.  He was seen leaving the bathroom with a satisfied smile on his face.

We've also uncovered a series of texts between Mozellak and Matheny:

Matheny: Hey pringle nuts.  Still fooling around on the computer?
Mozellak: Ya, I'm determined to win by any means necessary.
Mozellak: I've got to be careful though, one false move and it's game over.
Matheny: Landmines everywhere, huh?
Mozellak: Ya, and if anyone catches me doing this I'm in big trouble.
Matheny: Well, hurry up, I need to talk to you about Molina.  He's been hacking at everything lately.
Mozellak: Big moves, easy as 1-2-3!  You should see all the info I just unlocked!

Mozellak says he was talking about playing Minesweeper during an executive meeting, but we find this explanation to be not credible.  Also, Yadier Molina hasn't turned over his diary to us, as requested.

If Manfred's lucky, this will get him out from having to watch the game this afternoon.

All this is missing is some no-name low level stooge nicknamed "The Hacker" which is obviously a reference to the way he swings in the batting cage.

Even encrypted passwords can be retrieved by any person with the appropriate access such as Application or Database administrators. Weakly hashed passwords can be easily cracked as well. It's extremely common for backend systems to have shit password security.

By now, you know that the St. Louis Cardinals—the sports equivalent of the Duggar clan—are currently under investigation by the FBI for hacking into a Houston Astros database. (The FBI! That means they’re fucked.) And not only did they allegedly hack into another team’s system, but they allegedly did it in the clumsiest, most easily detectable way possible. Unlike other over-covered sports scandals, this one includes actual crime! Real cheating! A legitimate threat to the integrity of the game! THIS IS NOT WINNING THE RIGHT WAY.

He is speaking in front of a Red Sox backdrop. You would think they would put up a generic MLB one.

They had a master list of every password he used during his 8 years with the Cardinals.  That could be 1-3 passwords or 400.  I guess I'm not paranoid enough if this is how I should always act when creating new passwords. I still try to use different alphanumeric and special character passwords each time (probably some overlap), but it looks more and more like password security is an illusion.  Just cold comfort to help people sleep at night.

The idea that today's media isn't going to be all over this pounding it into the ground is funny.

Of all the Cardinalish tweets I've gotten throughout the years, this is far and away the Cardinalest.
Jeff Passan added,

@JeffPassan as a lifelong Cardinals fan I look at this as nothing more than stealing signs. Astros plunk Carpenter and it's all over.

I love this. Newport equates this with and makes it sound as if it was nothing more than some scout openly sitting in the bleachers with a pair of binoculars.

Yeah, this is a huge story and it's a major scandal, involving the FBI. The media is going to go crazy on this one.

FWIW, that wasn't Passan's tweet. It was linked on the first page of this thread. it was somebody named Scott Newport tweeting at Jeff Passan
