Not sure he played that much "free safety" in 2011 and 2012, and he was terrible, think it was more a matter of what he was asked to do given the personnel around him rather than a move to "strong safety"

He got moved to Strong Safety, where he should have been from day 1 in this league. He's a big plus in the run game and his coverage skills are more than ample against the big, slow oafs. It's the receivers he can't keep up with. I'm not sure if BB miscast him in his first run here, or if he was at FS out of necessity, but I really think it's that simple with him. I'd love if the Pats could get him back on the cheap, which I think is a real possibility.
I went into the guys he played with his first go-round in NE in my FC column: http://soshcentral.com/nfl/prodigal-chung-returns/ It's a bleak group, but honestly there aren't a lot of McCourtys out there who are true FS and can let the other safety be a pure box guy.

Not "free safety," but a lot of two-deep shells where Chung was playing really a blend of SS and FS. They also played a lot more zone, and Chung seems stronger in man coverage.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at, I don't think its as much a positional move as a scheme/personnel change given he was bad opposite McCourty his first go round.  I think BB is on record as saying the FS/SS designations don't make a lot of sense anyways

He only played 7-8 games with McCourty at safety, and was thrust quickly into a new role in November of 2012. I think with a camp under his belt in the new role, he's really hit his stride.

He actually didn't play opposite McCourty at safety - McCourty was at corner and only moved to safety after both Chung and Gregory got hurt.

Seriously, you guys should read the Chung article. :)

Oops, I got October and November mixed up. I guess that would be week 8 or 9 he moved, not week 4 or 5. :buddy:

I guess I'll read the article, but only if I have to...

By the numbers for this week: http://soshcentral.com/nfl/patriots-vs-lions-week-12-by-the-numbers/

What jumped out at me:
- After Brady's second straight game without getting sacked (53 dropbacks), his sack rate (3.2%) is just about half the league average (6.0%).
- After holding Detroit's RBs to 60 yards on 21 carries (2.9 YPC), the Pats' run D is basically league average (4.2 YPC vs 4.1, RB carries only).

The game in one statistic: The Lions drove to the Patriots’ 40-yard line or closer on 6 of their 12 possessions, but tallied just three field goals. This contest was “bend-but-don’t-break” defense at its finest.

He was healthy and available to play opposite McCourty in 2012, played badly in a limited role, and got beat out by Gregory and was basically a DNP-CD by playoff time and let go without an offer in the offseason.  I dont think the Pats thought he was very good in his old role, although it sounds like some of that might have been a disagreement between player/coach over roles and PT based on some of the comments BB and Chung made about their conversations before reuniting.

Both BB and Chung deserve a lot of credit for what has happened with this player this year as BB's vision for the defense last offseason is really taking shape and Chung has been a really useful piece playing to his strengths at low cost.  I certainly didn't think he'd make the team or be very good in any role.

Wow, how bad was that kick return?  Guy had 15 yards between him and the nearest gunner when he caught it.

Rappaport says no fine for Raiola.  Glad he didn't do something as detrimental to player safety as wearing the wrong earphones.

No fine for Raiola fits well with the incredibly poor officiating in that game.

Game ball to the coaches for having coached these players to the point where they don't lose their composure when they are on the wrong side of call after call and no-call after no-call.  (Not that there weren't some going the other way.)

I'm not tilting at conspiracy windmills but damn their were a lot of head scratchers yesterday.  That the Pats still won by 26 points is a testimony to coaches and players alike.

PS: As to the punt, it WAS a beauty, but phenweigh is on to something with his comment about adrenaline.  Booming punts OFTEN follow bad snaps or near blocks.  Not that I want Ryan to have that challenge but I wasn't entirely surprised to see him react that way to the bounced snap.

Last: Not a game ball but a nod to the crowd.  I was on hand yesterday and in the early phases, when the game was still in reach, it seemed louder than usual when the Lions had the ball, especially on third downs.

Corrente did the week 1 game against Miami as well, right? The crew was equally as inept then, and many went against the Pats there. I don't think he's biased, I think he just sucks, and I'd prefer to not see him again this year, particularly in the playoffs.

One of the worst punt returns, I have ever seen.  He ran straight towards the sidelines.  If he had run straight ahead he could have picked up 7 to 10 easily.

What a douche. Looking at a suspension this time for a key game.

This is a guy who deserves to be suspended for a playoff game.

I'm with Marshall, one game is too light. "Rest of the season including playoffs" would have been better. Especially since they had the video!
