I went into the guys he played with his first go-round in NE in my FC column: http://soshcentral.com/nfl/prodigal-chung-returns/ It's a bleak group, but honestly there aren't a lot of McCourtys out there who are true FS and can let the other safety be a pure box guy.Ed Hillel said:
He got moved to Strong Safety, where he should have been from day 1 in this league. He's a big plus in the run game and his coverage skills are more than ample against the big, slow oafs. It's the receivers he can't keep up with. I'm not sure if BB miscast him in his first run here, or if he was at FS out of necessity, but I really think it's that simple with him. I'd love if the Pats could get him back on the cheap, which I think is a real possibility.
Not "free safety," but a lot of two-deep shells where Chung was playing really a blend of SS and FS. They also played a lot more zone, and Chung seems stronger in man coverage.Stitch01 said:Not sure he played that much "free safety" in 2011 and 2012, and he was terrible, think it was more a matter of what he was asked to do given the personnel around him rather than a move to "strong safety"
Stitch01 said:Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at, I don't think its as much a positional move as a scheme/personnel change given he was bad opposite McCourty his first go round. I think BB is on record as saying the FS/SS designations don't make a lot of sense anyways
He actually didn't play opposite McCourty at safety - McCourty was at corner and only moved to safety after both Chung and Gregory got hurt.Ed Hillel said:He only played 7-8 games with McCourty at safety, and was thrust quickly into a new role in November of 2012. I think with a camp under his belt in the new role, he's really hit his stride.

Seriously, you guys should read the Chung article.
The game in one statistic: The Lions drove to the Patriots’ 40-yard line or closer on 6 of their 12 possessions, but tallied just three field goals. This contest was “bend-but-don’t-break” defense at its finest.
He was healthy and available to play opposite McCourty in 2012, played badly in a limited role, and got beat out by Gregory and was basically a DNP-CD by playoff time and let go without an offer in the offseason. I dont think the Pats thought he was very good in his old role, although it sounds like some of that might have been a disagreement between player/coach over roles and PT based on some of the comments BB and Chung made about their conversations before reuniting.Super Nomario said:He actually didn't play opposite McCourty at safety - McCourty was at corner and only moved to safety after both Chung and Gregory got hurt.

I'll pile on ... the top mind-blowing play of the game. Maybe the bad snap provided an adreneline rush.Phragle said:I can't get that fucking punt out of my head. Allen gets the game ball.

No, he did the Vikings game, though. LINK: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/officials/CorrTo0r.htmEd Hillel said:Corrente did the week 1 game against Miami as well, right?
Seems like at least the 2-3 (4th?) time this season he has hit a bomb that changed field position significantly at a really important time. Good call to drop Zoltan.Valek123 said:
