A Scud Away from Hell
Hats & t-shirts. Again. Bills shutting down GB (so far) is scary but they only average 22+ pts on the road and had the most discrepancy between home & away points scored.

But you know who else is good at defense?

Here are the game ballZ!
 • Jonas "Wake" Gray: when L. "Bake" Blount was slushing around, putting in Gray woke up the running game (tx game thread!) and game turned.
 • Jamie "P4P" Collins: just a beast. Can't recall any LB like Collins in any of BB teams. Collins & HT may be best LB duo in the game.
On to Buffalo NYJ.

Brady. He made some great throws today that I haven't seen him make in what feels like several weeks.

Browner had the hit that led to the game changing Chung interception. He also broke up a TD.

He played a good game.

Browner is getting picked on a bit by the league. He had one legit illegal contact (IIRC) today but everything else outside of the PF was ticky-tacky.

I think it's going to be huge to have his presence on the defense in the playoffs.

On the bright side, those ticky tack calls dry up in the playoffs.  I think you're right, he'll become even more important in January.

Also gotta go with Jonas Gray. Thought he gave them the little spark they needed in the second half. I'm not sure the Fish really bought those play-action fakes Brady did a couple times though.

Anti-game ball to Dan Fouts who seemed surprised Gronk is a good blocker.

I think Clears Cleaver deserves a game ball.  Obviously the Pats heard his taunting and it motivated them to close the window on the division.

It's not just Clears--there are like five of them, all with random all lowercase names, and they were all so damn happy after they won the superbowl in Week 1.

Collins, clearly.

Revis, for once again shutting down a receiver and making life easy for rest of defense.  Him hardly being mentioned during game is a sign he's succeeding at his job

Brady, for taking what was there and not making any material mistakes especially early on when temptation was there

kid-sized mini-game ball to Kline, for stepping up in 3rd quarter and playing a great game with Connelly out

that was weird, right?

game balls to Gronk, Revis, Collins, and Nink. But really the D is a team effort -- great to see Chandler J and Hightower back and both looking spry, not disabled.

Guy at halftime had a chance to win $1 million. They put 24 supersized lottery tickets on the field and 2 had a million under it. He picked 12 "for Tom Brady". He won the million and turned the game around.

I caught that. I think he said something to the effect that Gronk didn't want to block. At the time, I wasn't sure that I'd heard him right.
I thought he said that Gronk said he doesn't want to block on every play?
Actually seemed like a harmless comment to me.

Yep. And on the very next play he said, "And *another* nice block by Gronkowski", like he was shocked.

The whole defense.

Only 106 yards allowed in second half.

During the half-time show on the radio they stopped mid-sentence and said "Holy crap, that guy just won a million dollars." It was kind of funny.

Is it fair to say Collins was what we hoped mayo would be?

I never thought Mayo would be as athletic as Collins. And Collins still isn't the run-stopper in the hole that Mayo is. Collins just hits the RB before he even gets to the hole...

Special Teams needs to some love. This is one of the best Patriots Special Team units I've ever seen.
1. Blocked Field Goal
2. 100 Return Yards (That's like having a premier RB on your team)
3. Ghost - Automatic
4. Kicking Units, Return Units - all gave us great field position and seem to every game
Defense
1. Jamie Collins, Hightower, Nink, Revis, Browner, Chung (5 tackles, 5 assists, 1 int and almost 2nd), McCourty all made plays that stuck out. Vince and Silga kept the running game in check (3.3 avg), Chandler Jones looks like he's back!
2.  Held Miami to 18% 3rd Down efficiency.  The Defense kept us in the game 1st half.
Offense
1. Goal Line efficiency - Scored everytime they were within 10 yards
2. TB - Is it just me or is he just getting better.  Plows ahead for a few for that first.  Taking hits under pressure and still completing passes (He's somehow learned to fall while taking a hit so not to take the brunt of it but still giving the receiver the extra second)  Moved really well around the pocket today. The TD pass to Gronk - beauty.  The teardrop to Edelman on the sideline.  MAN CRUSH.
3. Lafell - Tough yards after the catch
4. Edelman - Always makes that tough catch.
5. Jonas Gray - Looked explosive

It was pretty amazing.  When he opened the envelope it seemed like he never even looked at it, just held the card with "$1,000,000" written on it towards the camera.  Only when the crowd went nuts did he flip it over and look at it.

He said his wife wants a new kitchen.  So I guess he's about halfway there, good for him.

The whole thing was screwy. He spent the first half noting that Gronk wasn't a part of it, even as Gronk was at times taking on two guys at a time, sometimes including Wake.

I think someone eventually called up to the booth and he tried to correct it with a, "Actually Gronk says he really likes to block... but not all the time," to make it a kind of joke that he's a good receiver too. All told, it was weird, dumb, and really lacked an appreciation of the significance of Gronk's contribution.

Oh, right -- can't believe I didn't mention Siliga. He's a binkie and I wondered if I overrated his absence, but I think he's shown he's the real deal. That rotation with Branch and Wilfork is really really good.

A Scud Away from Hell
..and as we suspected, Miami players did a lot of chirping, if Dolphins chirp:

“There was a lot of talk … those guys were chirping. The Miami Dolphins were chirping this week about [how] they should have beaten us by 50 and all of those type of things the first game,” he said. “If that's what they want to do, then that's what they want to do. The one thing you have to understand is you get a second stab at it because we're in the same [division]. You might need to watch what you say.”

Added safety Devin McCourty, “We lost to them in Week 1 and they had a lot to say.”
