One of the worst things about the war on drugs and all the anti drug programs, anti gambling programs etc, is treated it all like just bad choices. Most people don't get hooked on drugs, or gamble away the mortgage but some do. Those people are different mentally than the others. They may do that to themselves, but there is also evidence people are born with predispositions. Blaming addicts and throwing them in jail, or just telling them to smarten up, etc has never worked and it just allows other to not care and do anything for that person. Cancer is a disease and choices can increase your risk. But some people get it when others don't.
I never like Manziel the player, or the "johnny Football" persona. He has almost always come across as an arrogant clown, and that certainly plays a roll in his downfall. But, I take no pleasure in watching his self destruction.
