Fitzpatrick must be colorblind then. Would explain some of the throws tonight.

Also the thread title, while of course accurate, could be a little more specific on the topic.

The little town of Bethlehem.
The NFL is stupid, but there are already threads for each of the specific reasons. Except for Thursday night games and pre-season, maybe.

If there was a North Pole Intramural Football League, I think I now know what a game would look like. Just the elves are more swole..

They are asking SF to take down overhead trolley wires for their SB Fanfest Village. Why? Because they look ugly. Forget that people are actually using them.

LINK: http://sfist.com/2015/11/12/super_bowl_50_committee_requesting.php

The bundle of joy that is Super Bowl 50 has found yet another way to mess with your commute. Not content to take over Justin Herman Plaza and a chunk of the Embarcadero in the name of a Fan Village — sweeping any and all homeless under the rug in the process — the Super Bowl 50 Committee has plans to remove the unsightly overhead Muni wires along Market Street. That this could potentially disrupt bus lines and streetcar traffic for weeks before and after the event appears to be of little concern.

As a person with exceptional color vision (I generally rack up 36-38 on the 40 shades of blue test) I found myself wishing that I were colorblind.

Is it really about testing though? Or is it about recognizing what the rest of the population knows about the colors red and green?

I wonder if those who are colorblind are doing a bit of attention-seeking here. You couldn't tell the teams apart? How about the fact that they wear different helmets with completely different logos and skill players on offense - which is what you would be staring at to follow the ball - generally have very different numbers than their defensive counterparts?

I'm sure it was a bit annoying, but I think people are bitching just to bitch.

Usually they are up on the latest trends in science.

Dude, check out the video in the Deadspin link that shows what a colorblind person sees.

Sure it is. R-G is what bit them this time, but basically anytime you mess with branding colors there needs to be a basic set of 'hey, let's look at this from a bunch of different angles' steps you run through, specifically to avoid hitting any negative edge cases without needing to remember all of them.

For someone who is as color-blind as they come (in a red/green/brown/pink fashion), I could only tell the uniforms apart by the circular Jets logo. Or easier than that, the team with the white quarterback was the Jets. Which wasn't very difficult, so I agree that the color blind bitchiness was a bit overblown. I'll save my complaining for the people that gush over the foliage or get mad when I can't find my dog's poop in the grass ... and raise them by the fact that I can't get drafted into the infantry.

Focus group: There's a bit of a problem here with your new marketing push. All we can see is green

Yes, I agree. My point was that any idiot should have thought of this even without testing. Maybe it's just me, but it's the first thing I thought of when I saw the uniforms, and I don't have anyone in my life who is color blind (or at least talks about it).

Color blindness truthers are the worst kind of truthers.

No, but seriously, I wasn't tweeting about it or anything but it was definitely confusing at times. There were times it didn't matter but it's not like you can look at the scrum at the line of scrimmage when everyone looks highly similar and quickly figure out exactly what is going on the way you normally do. That's never really happened before so it's unsurprising to me that it became a thing.

But to your point, it's not something I'm really making fun of the NFL for doing...but they really should try and stick to having one team in white 99.9% of the time.

Actually, this makes a lot of sense.
Apparently, the NFL doesn't understand how color perception works. Now the people with blue-yellow color blindness are going to have trouble. They should've at least made the numbers black for one of the jerseys in order to distinguish them better.

I'm not trying to knock your vision here, but as you know, color-blindness (as well as color perception itself) can vary in both degree and range. Some people have more trouble dissociating between red and green than others, even if some others may have problems with more colors.

It's well established on the record that the NFL does not believe in science.

According to this site, the NFL has lucked out for the next game. Blue-yellow color blindness is a misnomer. Blue-green color blindness would be a more accurate description.

Yep, and different tests are widely disparate in their evaluations. When I take the Farnsworth test or other color arrangement tests, I come out as 100% normal. On the Ishihara/random dot style tests, I'm between mildly and moderately red-green impaired. I was 29 years old before I ever had any inkling that I was partially color blind, though in retrospect it makes sense.

Seems like an improvement over the Jags' real unis. Whoever came up with that fucking two-tone helmet should be dragged behind a car. How the hell did multiple levels of people say "yeah, that's great, let's do it??"

This is probably the most interesting thing about this controversy that nobody really seems to be digging into. Sure, it sucks for the fans and the NFL should have done their homework and nixed the idea, but the biggest thing to me is that, if the teams are anything like the general population, just about two players on the field at any given time would have had red-green colorblindness. Imagine playing a high-speed, high-stakes game like professional football and not being able to tell immediately which players are on your team and which are on the other team. I haven't seen any stories come out about players in the game who are colorblind, but it would be very interesting to see.

I imagine that those players are going to keep quiet about it, for the simple fact that it's incredibly damaging to their employment prospects (assuming color blindness hasn't already caused them not to make it in the league to begin with).

I am about as color blind as you can get, to the point where eye doctors who have tested me have made comments about it. I've never had an issue distinguishing teams in a sporting event until Thursday night. Typically one uniform is mostly white, which is easy to see, and the other one is darker. The fact that I can't tell the colors doesn't really matter.

In terms of a player having issues, obviously QB would have the greatest impact, linebacker and DB second. If you were an offensive or defensive lineman you could probably get by without much of a problem on most plays.

I know, right? It's like when women complain about being objectified when they're the ones wearing clothes that make them look hot. Or gay people demanding rights when all they have to do is act normal and we won't even know they are gay.

Fucking attention-seekers, all of them. And don't get me started on minorities ..,

Knowing you, I'll bet three consecutive "+1" posts to that is both annoying and irritating.

But it is a heck of a post. That you did it - and I just told him to watch the video - means Rocky is right when he tells Drago we can all change. Even H78. ;-)

Gender inequality and racism is not quite on the same level as "suffering" the sight a one-toned Starbucks cup.

But I digress to our apparent PC Principal.

I think you're overreacting to the colorblinds' "bitching" which is more of a bemusing observation. I think this is mostly just funny to both colorblind and color-sighted folks everywhere. Sure some people were probably mildly annoyed when they couldn't tell the teams apart, but I don't think anyone is crying discrimination, rather just calling out the NFL for being stupid and incompetent. It's just funny, and the jerseys are ugly regardless, and it's all just an attempt to sell more merchandise and make money.
