Not sure how many might follow sailing, but this year's round-the-world Ocean Race is in progress (on Leg 4 from Itajaí, Brazil to Newport, RI). The race consists of 7 legs that cover about 40,000 miles and takes about 8 months to complete. They boats arrive in Newport (est.) 5/13. Newport is the only North American stopover.
There are 2 classes of boats in this year's race: the IMOCA 60-foot class, which is sailing around the world; and the 65-foot VO65 Class, which is racing only in legs 1, 6, and 7. Depending on conditions, these boats are capable of sailing over 600 miles/day (25+ knots). For the IMOCAs, there were qualifying races, with the top 5 teams competing:
