Too bad that getting goals is important in soccer, because we are doing everything but that part.

They scored 2 goals and put it away when Berhalter listened to me and went to 2 strikers and let the fullbacks provide width.

United might give me Ten Hags job based on this performance alone

My favorite thing about Gio is I have no idea if he is actually fast at all. He just glides around, slows everyone down around him. Elite economy of movement. Funny contrast to Pulisic.

Can we fix the chants? How can we fix the chants? They are so cringey, is everyone this bad at chants the first few decades of international relevance?

I'd start by trashing any of the ones that say "yanks". Absolute poser fake British shit that nobody in America calls ourselves.

I thought the 'you can't do that' when the guy was sent off was pretty good, fwiw.
Yeah this one is very college sports, very Puritan, very American.

Of course, the "I believe" thing in its overinflated sense of self is EXTREMELY American. Viking clap, appropriated from others and thus also very American. But they suck. We need more and I'm afraid there is not enough time before 2026 to strip the whole operation down and start from the beginning.

Chat GPT writes chants.

Pulisic:

(To the tune of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi)

Whoa-oh! Pulisic on the wing,
Take us to glory, make the rafters ring.
He dribbles past defenders, oh so sublime,
In the red, white and blue, he'll shine.

(Chorus) Ohh, Christian Pulisic, we believe,
Score a goal, make the opposition grieve.
From the San Siro to Wembley,
You're the pride of the US, our MVP.

He's got the skill, he's got the pace,
Every opponent, he'll outpace.
From the USA to London town,
He wears the crest, he wears the crown.

Reyna:

(To the tune of "Hey Jude" by The Beatles)

Hey Gio, don't be afraid,
You were made to go out and play.
Remember to pass and take your shot,
You're the one who'll make our hearts hot.

(Chorus)
Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah
, Hey Gio, we believe in your star.
Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah,
Hey Gio, you'll take us far.

In the midfield, you weave your spell,
With every touch, you do so well.
Through the defense, you glide with grace,
Gio Reyna, you own that space.

(Chorus)
Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah,
Hey Gio, we believe in your star.
Nah-nah-nah, nah-nah-nah-nah,
Hey Gio, you'll take us far.

From Dortmund to the national team,
You're every fan's hopeful dream.
With skill and flair, you light the pitch,
Gio Reyna, you make us twitch.

Dest:

(To the tune of "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond)

Sergino, oh-oh-oh,
Our right-back, watch him go.
Dribbling down the wing so fast,
Defenders can't catch, can't surpass.

(Chorus)
Sergino, oh-oh-oh,
Scoring goals, putting on a show.
Good times never seemed so bright,
Dest, you're our shining light.

Crossing with precision, oh what a sight,
Opponents beware, he'll take flight.
From Ajax to the stars, he'll rise,
Sergino Dest, our football prize

I like pretty much every one of the Rockin' All Over the World soccer songs. Even the forced rhyme ones. It's just a great sing-along.

Well, I like it , I like it, I like it, I like it, I li-li-like it, I li-li-li,
Here we go-oh
Christian, Sergino and Gio.

Something like that.

My qualifications for things like this: I like "I believe." I like the wave. I like Sweet Caroline. I like soccer chants even if they are derivative of shit Iceland does. In fact, I love all of it. So, my vote probably should be diluted. People having fun doing fun things is fun.

Let's try this for Turner...

Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt
Turner saves them so hard
Makes me say Oh, my Lord
Thank you for blessing him
With a mind to save and two hyped hands
Stop'em all til they cry mercy
A super dope homeboy from the Jersey
And he's known as such
And this is a goal you can't touch

Using the Beatles feels wrong somehow.
Probably because some of the most clever chants using the Beatles have come from Merseyside and so when others do it it's weird?

Money Can't Buy You Stones and I'm So Glad That Jurgen Is A Red are pretty awesome.

We are a cringey people, it is in our nature.

Also it's harder for national teams. With club teams, a lot of the same guys in the same supporters groups are there every week with season tickets, and they can coordinate and establish a baseline repertoire. With national teams, games happen every month or two, in random-ass cities a long way away from each other, and not many people will go to them all that frequently. There are a few supporters groups but even American Outlaws has had a lot of trouble trying to coordinate new chants (and/or they rely on a few guys who came up with the existing stuff and probably think it's great). And then you've got USSF coming over the top with extra-cringe stuff that they want people to do, most of which is just for #engagement.

Tough problem to solve in any sort of durable way.

We just need to sing easy songs from the American pop/rock/hip hop songbook. Don’t even change the lyrics, just sing them.

Won’t Back Down
Mr. Brightside
Jump Around
Party in the USA
etc.

my personal favorite US soccer anthem would be American Music by Violent Femmes. Easy and fun to sing, (baaaaaby)

Just want to say I’m here for this: fun is meant to be a big component of the experience and I’m not sure when everyone decided to be Drax : )

As for the game, I finally had time to watch and the difference between the halves was striking. Not bashing Berhalter (actually thought he was likely the best available choice) but is there any way to pull some of those changes into the first half? It seems like the shift to a 433 for example, isn’t something structural that needs a half to deploy especially if you foresaw a potential need.

Canada wins in Jamaica, 2-1. Return leg in Toronto on Tuesday.

I think the loser of that matchup will go on to win the fallback option in March pretty easily, against T&T or Costa Rica or whoever.

Pepi, LDLT, and Aaronson in for Tillman, Wes (injury), and Paredes. First time in quite a while we have lined up to start with two pure strikers.

Still a few decent seats available if any SOSHer happens to be in Western Port of Spain and were inclined to try to catch the second half.

Aaronson is getting embarrassed in midfield. That's not where you want him tonight, I don't think.

Edit -- By that I mean I would move him up closer to the attacking third.

Trinidad is really pressing more. They’re gonna be dead on their feet at the hour mark. This is one of those where you just keep working them and there will be acres of space later
