I don't know how Sanders is standing up right now, but given denver's track record, he'll be diagnosed with a "neck injury" and be back next series.

ouch.
1) that's one of those penalties that comes from a huge hit. I'm not sure that a flag if he pops up.
2) thanks ref for throwing his hat on sanders as he lies thinking he might be dying

1 is exactly right. They don't care whether the hit technically was correct. See the hit, throw the flag, then fit into nearest cubbyhole.

There is such a thing as hitting too hard. It sucks, but that's reality. Especially if the guy getting hit is a Bronco.

What did Carey say?

Paraphrased:   They don't want contact above the shoulders....even though led with shoulder, it happens so fast you can't tell if there is helmet contact....so it will almost always get called even though it isn't...

Mike Carey: "As you could see it was a shoulder to shoulder hit, and they want the target zone to be below the shoulder, but since the head was above the shoulder, I can see why they threw a flag"

NFL penalties and fines are a results based nonsense.
Try to kill someone and fail, slap on the wrist, clean hit that looks brutal and player hurt, huge fine/ suspension. It's utter bullshit.

i didn't hate the carey explanation so much. basically acknowledging that it's really hard to tell in real time that it wasn't a hit to the head. if that was gronk or edelman getting leveled like that people here would be complaining that the defender's head was above the shoulders

NIners with a really cool run play on 2nd down, where out of a read option shotgun set they trap the scraping edge defender and Gore picks up 11.

On the next play, that sorry receiver Crabtree burns the Giants for a TD.

also, worth pointing out that this is a rare example of a time where manning's noodle arm causes a real problem for his team. usually he can throw guys open and make the timing work in various ways... but that's a throw where if he can zip it in a little flatter, sanders has plenty of time to catch it and doesn't get killed.

Jim D pretty much said the same on Twitter. It's asking too much for officials to make the determination on where contact occurred and the play should be reviewable.

What bothers me most is how late the hat was thrown on the play. (The official already threw his flag for illegal contact.) He was clearly reacting to the severity of the injury, not the hit.
