What is next for BB?

I get the distinct impression few from outside the organization want to come here. That sounds true of the OC position, and probably true of every other spot. Internal hires are going to be the way for now. Maybe it works, but other than Bill leaving (a big one for sure) we seem to be the same people with different titles.
It’s more likely that Mayo was impressed with Caley.

He knows Caley, worked with him for years. guys usually hire guys they know and have worked with before, across the league. Not 100% obviously but even looking at Robinson, interviewed a couple places but quickly jumped to Morris' staff probably in part because they worked together recently.

I'm 79 yrs old. I saw Butch Songin QB the BOSTON Patriots. I saw a game in Harvard Stadium. I saw a game at Nickerson Field. I froze my ass off sitting on the metal bleachers at Schaefer Stadium all the while dodging beer cans and trying to stay out of the weekly melees that punctuated the games. The glory of the Belichik/Brady era was like euphoria. Yet, here I am, wondering if I'll have the same passion for the Pats because I found myself so allied to BB. OTOH I don't regret it at all that I will be less of a Pats fan. I simply remain appreciative of and to him.

I am not going to dismiss the thought that others from outside the organization don’t want to come here right now. It could be anything,
The roster stinks
Krafts light on actual spending
Following Belichick
No QB
Too many from former regime still around
Don’t believe in Mayo…

Maybe none of these but I am looking at the fact that they offered the ST job to an Atl coach who just lost his head coach, and he still turned it down,
And we are looking like we are going to end up with a

HC, Mayo
DC, Covington, and
OC, Caley

who are all internal minus one year with Caley.

Well he turned it down because he was offerred the same job in ATL. No real reason to move your family and from an organization that you're familiar with if you aren't getting a promotion.

Caley at OC is...underwhelming. It begins to feel like we're just running it back, just without Bill. While that may - MAY - be good in terms of roster-building and big-footing the obvious choices on draft day, on GAME day bringing back Mayo and the rest of the staff with a few wrinkles, most of which have been here before...just feels...ugh.

Helps to provide some support as to why hiring the internal candidates was the incorrect choice. The meme that other coaches turned the Pats down is one that that should die a painful death.

Caley was not an internal hire.

Yeah it would be like calling Josh an external hire. Or Patricia. Or Judge. Or BOB.
Yeah and he is even closer to an internal hire than any of them. He was gone one year and did the same job with the Rams as he did here. At least these other guys were gone multiple years and had expanded roles while they were gone.

Belichick coached here for 1 year. Caley was here for 9?
He did a good job with the tight ends when the roster had NFL quality tight ends. It's been while (Henry is sort of OK but unlikely to be here next year anyway), but it's always interesting why we assume the organization is somehow "dumb" for hiring these assistants when we have almost like zero information how well these guys are at doing their jobs (I'll make an exception for the Patricia/Judge hirings, but Mac can also go fuck off).

Again the organization passed on Caley in favor of Patricia and Judge back in 2022. Now he is good enough to be the OC?

We’ve killed BB for picking Patricia and Judge, and rightfully so- it was a bad decision. It seems weird to then suggest that other options that didn’t get the job were also bad options too.

So basically you are saying that Mayo is a better judge of coaching talent than BB. Which may prove to be true. But that’s a leap for the time being.
Not, not saying that at all. Cannot even begin to think why you drew that conclusion from my post.

What I am saying is that Mayo is far more comfortable with Caley being OC in 2024 than BB was with him being OC in 2022. Don't know all or really any of the reasons why, but Caley did gain more experience in a different offense, and the circumstances are also different. I find that argument more persuasive than the alternative that Mayo/Patriots are just making a dumb decision because they rejected him 2 years ago. Or that they are settling for Caley because no other candidates are interested (insert hundreds of guffaws here).

I mean, Caley’s resume doesn’t really suggest he was a good option regardless of Patricia/Judge

Never called plays, never worked with a young QB, his position group (other than Gronk who preceded him) was wildly underwhelming

maybe he’s a super genius, interviews well and has a great plan for the offense but there’s no reason for any fan to think he’s a good option based on what we - as outsiders - know of him.

He did a good job with Gronk and I guess Bennett (in 2016) but that’s the GOAT and a guy coming off a Pro Bowl year 2 years prior.

Generally position coaches who become hot commodities (like Mayo for example) can develop players or squeeze quality performance out of mediocre talent. There’s no real evidence Caley did that. Even if Keene and Asiasi were just totally hopeless and talentless guys and we put all of the blame for their lack of development on their lack of ability or BB, there’s still nothing in Caley’s tenure that suggests he is a good TE coach.

I'll start by saying that perhaps this discussion should be moved to the Mayo thread rather than the "what is next for BB" thread.

Keene and Asiasi have done literally nothing since leaving the Patriots. I think what gets position coaches promoted is their reputation among other players and coaches they've worked with. There are a lot of variables that go into how well a certain unit plays, and the position coach is just part of it. The best TE coach in the world cannot make Mac Jones throw the ball properly.

I'll end by saying that so far Caley has been invited to an in-person interview, with a source claiming he is "well-positioned" to be named OC. Belichick was similarly well-positioned to be named Falcons head coach, so the angst around Caley could yet be premature.

Still feels like it'll be McDaniels due to relationship with Thunder and the likelihood BB isn't coaching this year.

I think BB has no interest. Florio was speculating it weeks ago that he wouldn't want to be there (also noted Harbaugh and maybe Vrabel as well at the end of the segment) based on their setup.. they have a bunch of minority owners who unlike most franchises seem to have their hands in stuff, they have all these advisors, a GM, it's sneakily a bit of a mess there in terms of.... "who is in charge?"
The Commies and BB settling for one another now that Ben Johnson is staying in Detroit is going to be incredible. I wonder if the Commies will hire BB with Vrabel as associate HC and pre-determined successor. That seems like the kind of thing an overstuffed committee would do. Very fitting for Washington.

If things actually did work out that way, which I doubt, I think it could be great for Washington to have BB's successor already in house like that. Especially if there is some success over the next couple of years to build on.

But I think Vrabel would be better off sitting out a year if he doesn't get a HC job this time. Which of course he might in Washington or Seattle anyway.

I think Vrabel should go to college for a couple years. He'd do well there and it would give him the leverage to go the Harbaugh control route next NFL job

Yeah, I don't know about that. I think the NIL stuff plus conferences blowing up and reforming are things that will make college football really unpredictable and more challenging than in the past. At least for a while. The kind of challenges that might take a new coach a handful of seasons to figure out to the point where they can excel.

Edit: just to finish off that thought, I'm not sure Vrabel would want to invest the years it would take to be successful in college. I think he has had enough success in the NFL to find a good situation if he is patient for a year or so if necessary.

Can we find a better name than Commies for an almost original NFL team that had Sammy Baugh, Sonny Jurgensen, Darrell Green, John Riggins, the Hogs, etc. playing for them in the past?

Maybe they should have thought about that when they renamed the team.

Removing the Snyder Stain should be job number one for Harris, he would do well to rename and rebrand the team as quickly as possible. I would imagine a new--and better--name would go over great with the fanbase as well. One of the best in the NFL before Diamond Dan took them over.

The answer the entire time should have been Pigskins. It would be an homage to the old Hogs, and they could keep the Skins moniker. I suppose there would be risk in them being called the Pigs, but I think that most NFL fans would just stick to calling them the Skins. And they could have some kind of cool warthog type of logo / mascot.

I don't like pigskins. Just name them the HOGS. Or my favorite:

The Washington Cherry Blossoms was the way to go. They could have cornered the market on pink jerseys (has served Inter Miami well) and fauna.
