Sounds like Wyc has stacked a lot of money during these non-tax years, and has decided you can't take it with you.
Can we pin this for like 9 years from now, after 3 NBA titles, and some transition in the roster that will require some rebuild/remake years and all of the posts how Celtics ownership is cheap and won’t spend and it’s time for them to go for the pox that they have brought upon the city of Boston for finishing in last place and only having the 7th highest salary cap in the league that year?
Yeah, there was never much/any evidence they were cheap. Not sure why people latched on to that one so hard.
I think that’s a bit of a straw man. I’m not sure that’s how I perceived those posts: I think it was a healthy (if overblown) concern given the teams methodical approach to the tax.Yeah, there was never much/any evidence they were cheap. Not sure why people latched on to that one so hard.
I would say normal sports fan pessimism, but it was a big narrative at the national level too. I think people saw them ducking the repeater with teams that weren't quite there, and assumed it meant they'd be cheap in general.
The shrewdest move was dumping Theis on the Bulls to duck under the tax 2 seasons ago. Everyone around here pretty much agreed that the team wasn't ready to contend then. Ainge deserves some credit for that and probably buys the current version a few extra shekels.I think that’s a bit of a straw man. There wasn’t as much assertion of poverty as much as need for ‘proof’ that when the time came they would spend.
fwiw I did think they’d spend, but it’s not like this is some hero moment for ownership either: as observed they’ve been banking and were under the tax all the way to the finals appearance.
I'm interpreting this stuff as "and if the right guy becomes available" as well. Like Poeltl, while useful, is probably not "the right guy". But others might come up at the deadline or buyout season, and Brad has asked for a carveout if that happens and been told "yes". Real difference-makers.The shrewdest move was dumping Theis on the Bulls to duck under the tax 2 seasons ago. Everyone around here pretty much agreed that the team wasn't ready to contend then. I do think WYC is saying that the Jan/Feb TPEs are in play which could be very helpful for BIG depth. It makes all the sense in the world that they are in GFIWJ mode (Go For It With JAYs).
Looks like they have a 6.9 exception from Juancho and a 5.9 from Schroder. As well as several smaller 2 million and less ones.I'm interpreting this stuff as "and if the right guy becomes available" as well. Like Poeltl, while useful, is probably not "the right guy". Was looking more at an in-season acquisition which wouldn't limit us to FAs, but agreed that there aren't a ton of guys in that price range who are bigtime.Looks like they have a 6.9 exception from Juancho and a 5.9 from Schroder. As well as several smaller 2 million and less ones.
Not many potential 2023/2024 free agents on non playoff teams that make that little that seem to be any sort of difference makers. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/free-agents/2023
Yeah the potential fits on that list are fairly narrow, especially when you consider the likelihood of contenders trading players away in mid season.Looks like they have a 6.9 exception from Juancho and a 5.9 from Schroder. As well as several smaller 2 million and less ones.

I was also thinking in season (all those TPE's expire in February I think). Just seems that guys that get dealt for a TPE and a not good pick are almost always soon to be FAsWas looking more at an in-season acquisition which wouldn't limit us to FAs, but agreed that there aren't a ton of guys in that price range who are bigtime.
I think the shrewdest move Celtics management made during this time was to somehow convince fans that the repeater tax is so onerous that it must be delayed at nearly all costs. The shrewdest move was dumping Theis on the Bulls to duck under the tax 2 seasons ago.
