What's the value of a hitting coach? $66,000 per added hit?

Hmmm, I had some back of the envelope calculations on the value of a hitting coach but it didn't go through for some reason and I don't feel like redoing it right now ... mods delete unless someone else wants to take the idea over.

Here is an interesting quote from a Yankees forum about their recently fired hitting coach:

It's insane to me how people blame hitting coaches...or for that matter give them tons of credit...for the overall performance of the offense.

...

He earned his money at the bottom of the lineup, helping the .235 hitters get an extra hit or two per month. Seemed reasonable to me.

How is it quantified that he helped them get an extra hit or 2?

They didn't get into it, but there are studies that look at the effects of managers as well as veteran leadership and find a benefit. I assume they see if there is a bump in performance over career trajectories but perhaps there is something more sophisticated. You could do the same for hitting coaches.

Seems like it would be really hard to quantify unless hitters/coaches were tracking things such as "we changed this on this day", type data.

A post on a Yankee forum where they "find a benefit" from "veteran leadership," but where "They don't get into [how to quantify/evaluate] it?"
I am shocked.
